Why Dig Deeper?

Read His Words Before Ours!

Psalm 119:161-176

שׁ Shin
161 Princes have persecuted me without cause, but my heart fears only your word. 162 I rejoice over your promise like one who finds vast treasure. 163 I hate and abhor falsehood, but I love your instruction. 164 I praise you seven times a day for your righteous judgments. 165 Abundant peace belongs to those who love your instruction; nothing makes them stumble. 166 Lord, I hope for your salvation and carry out your commands. 167 I obey your decrees and love them greatly. 168 I obey your precepts and decrees, for all my ways are before you.

ת Tav
169 Let my cry reach you, Lord; give me understanding according to your word. 170 Let my plea reach you; rescue me according to your promise. 171 My lips pour out praise, for you teach me your statutes. 172 My tongue sings about your promise, for all your commands are righteous. 173 May your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen your precepts. 174 I long for your salvation, Lord, and your instruction is my delight. 175 Let me live, and I will praise you; may your judgments help me. 176 I wander like a lost sheep; seek your servant, for I do not forget your commands.

The Original Intent

1) What is to be consumed in “Shin”? (verses 161-168)

The Hebrew letter “Shin” denotes “consuming, devouring, or eating” as the shape of its letter “resembles flames of fire and teeth”. (Tanya Remkiv)

Unique from the other octets of Psalm 119, Shin records no specific prayerful pleas whatsoever. In the absence of requests, we glimpse the beauty left in the wake of our desires being consumed by the God who is Himself Satisfaction and Delight.

Shin is marked by the quiet, calm, yet firmly decided insistent knowing and shared intimacy with the One for whom every octet has been written.

Listen for this sweetness in the psalmist’s carefully chosen words, “…My heart fears only Your Word.” (verse 161) “I rejoice over Your promise like one who finds vast delight.” (verse 162) “I love Your instruction.” (verse 163) “I praise You seven times a day.” (verse 164)

Go read the remaining 4 verses of this octet and see the pattern the psalmist models of quiet, decided delight! Fear, anger, anxiety, pride, the desire for control, insistence on one’s own way, complaint, and all other forms of self that actively fight against perfectly satisfying love have been consumed and drowned out by the Lord’s ways, wisdom, and good presence.

Praise, rejoicing, adoration, peace, and delight have taken their place; there is secret joy here!

The Everyday Application

1) What is to be consumed in “Shin”? (verses 161-168)

In reflecting on these delightful verses of praise, I recognize four responses in myself.

1) I feel drawn in to the intimacy found between the psalmist and the Satisfying Savior.

2) I feel encouraged and urged forward to continue seeking the depths of relationship available to me in the Lord.

3)
I’m convicted to use my prayers not only for pleading and interceding, but also for praising and rejoicing.

4) I’m reminded of the pure delight and peace found in simply basking in knowing and trusting the goodness of the Lord.

One of my favorite verses in the psalter is little known and rarely quoted, but it speaks volumes of the relationship that is readily accessible to all who would give themselves to knowing the Lord God through His Word. “I do not get involved with things too great or too wondrous for me. Instead, I have calmed and quieted my soul like a weaned child with its mother; my soul is like a weaned child.” (Psalm 131:1-2)

This level of depth in trusting relationship with the Lord does not come overnight or by reading snippet verses on social media or even regularly attending church or listening to excellent biblical podcasts. It is only slowly discovered over time of intentioned pursuit of the Holy One by meeting regularly, daily, yes, but moment by moment, in the secret place of the soul known only to the Holy Creator and the Beloved Creation.

Have you met Him here? He’s waiting to be known and consume your fears, your sin, your vile things, and draw you into blissful satisfaction that knows no bounds!

The Original Intent

2) What is the theme of “Tav”? (verses 169-176)

“
Let my cry reach You, Lord; give me understanding according to your word. Let my plea reach You; rescue me according to Your promise.” (verses 169-170) Do you hear the psalmist’s urgent fervor in his pleading? Do you feel his desperate longing for the One he has learned to love and trust with all that is within him?

Read his plea again until you’ve connected with his prayer in a way that mirrors some part of your own desperation. Have you ever felt as if your prayers are bouncing off the ceiling? Have you ever begged the Lord for His ear and attention while sobbing on the floor or screaming at the sky or with shoulders shaking and fists clenched? The psalms are filled with moments of raw honesty when the one praying is pleading for justice, begging to be seen, grasping at Hope that the Lord will be faithful to answer, but this is not the theme of this octet.

It isn’t desperation that drives the author’s words, it’s trusting dependence. The author knows exactly what is on the other side of the door on which he bangs, and he can’t wait for it to open because of the deep love he has found in knowing the Lord God.

There is none who satisfies, as the previous octet declares, but there is none other in all creation on whom the psalmist would rather lean for utter dependence in every season the Lord God, His Word, and His wise ways. On the heels of his pleas, “Let my cry reach You… Let my plea reach You…”, (verses 169-170) the author can’t stop the grin spreading across his face or the joy shooting from his hands, “My lips pour out praise… My tongue sings…”. (verses 171-172)

The Lord and His ways have proven a faithful anchor and steady harbor in which to moor his life and he chooses praise and worship for the gracious goodness of the steadfast Lord.

The Everyday Application

2) What is the theme of “Tav”? (verses 169-176)

Where does your heart lean when you think of the Lord? How have you seen Him prove faithful, steady, and true? When was the last time you banged in His “door” just to shout His praise and declare His goodness and pour out your heartfelt praise? When was the last time you shared His praise on whatever platform the Lord has given you whether it’s social media, friendships, or simply standing in line at the check out stand?

Jerry Bridges is quoted as saying, “And yet who of us are fit to praise, except those whom God has taught? The ‘new song’ ill accords with the old heart.” The psalmist spent 176 verses declaring what he had been taught by the Lord’s Word, commands, statutes, precepts, and ways. The end result was a giddy tongue that delighted in singing of spontaneous praise that could not be held back.

Herein is rich encouragement for each of us regardless of where we are in our faith journey. If you’re looking for more joy and delight, no matter how much you have or have not already experienced, the answer is found in allowing the Lord to teach you more of His ways.

How to begin? By reading His Word! (Psalm 119:9) Want an excellent place to start? Try Psalms! Read 1 to 150 and then start again!

The Original Intent

3) What tension exists in the final verse of the psalm? (verse 176)

Have you ever felt caught between “both and” or the often difficult and murky “time between”? For me, I most often find myself in the “now and not yet” where I often cry out “I believe! Help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24)

This tension was also the dwelling place for the psalmist of 119, and as he closed his alphabet song intended to teach and train and remind himself and his son of truth, he grew reflective of this reality.

He had penned 175 verses declaring the kind, gracious goodness of the Lord and His ways, but also spoke frequently of his own passionate desire to follow those ways and be forever marked by them. He often boldly declared how much he loved the Lord and His wisdom while others spurned God. (verse 161)

Yet, in the very last verse, in keeping with the Tav theme of utter dependence, the psalmist states, “I wander like a lost sheep.” He recognized his own very desperate need for a shepherd God.

No amount of love for God, no matter how great or impassioned, could keep him from straying from the Lord. He was human. He erred. He wandered. Though claiming a love that would outlast all others, he knew in his heart, he was still prone to wander.

His final plea is stunning, “seek Your servant”. He cast himself wholly upon the Person of God. Not even God’s laws could seek him out and bring him home to the heart of God, only the Shepherd could seek what was lost.

Turning full circle, knowing with confidence that he would surely wander, but would certainly be sought after and brought home, he penned his final words in light of his assured reinstatement and continued growth in deepening relationship with the Holy One, “for I do not forget Your commands.”

The Everyday Application

3) What tension exists in the final verse of the psalm? (verse 176)

Doesn’t this raw, tender testimony give you hope and comfort?! It surely does for me, because, sisters, I know I’m a wanderer.

Oh, I’ve learned there is nothing sweeter or better than my Jesus. I will trust Him for all my days and want nothing more than to sit and know Him more and more; He is that precious. But, like the psalmist, I also wrestle grievously.

With doubt. With fear. With lust for (perceived) control, or (my version of) perfection, or worshiping my schedule, or my children’s wants, or the stability of my marriage relationship or 100 other idols that deserve absolutely nothing compared to the Lord God. Still, I know I will wander, chasing them down only to be left empty handed, disappointed, and frustrated.

How encouraging it is to know my status with the Lord, and the stability of our relationship doesn’t heave and sway based on my ability to follow all the magnificent, wonderful ways of the Lord I truly love so much.

The Lord knows I will leave Him. He also knows I will long to be back at His side, but not as much as He longs for me to be more fully His. He loves me enough to chase me down, not recklessly mind you, for nothing the Lord does is reckless, but with a passionate pursuit that refuses to relinquish His relationship with me.

With Yahweh, Sisters, breathe this gracious truth in with me, I am safe. You are safe.

Every single time I’ve wandered away and the Lord has brought me home, I’ve sung His praises all the louder and decided a little more firmly that He alone is worthy of my worship and, like the psalmist, I’m intent to “not forget Your commands”!

Faithful and dedicated servant.
A wandering sheep needing rescue, understanding, and assistance.

Which one am I?
Both.

Though redeemed, my flesh still wins some battles. This makes me grateful for God’s Word, which is “profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Psalm 119:145-160

ק Qof
145 I call with all my heart; answer me, Lord. I will obey your statutes. 146 I call to you; save me and I will keep your decrees. 147 I rise before dawn and cry out for help; I put my hope in your word. 148 I am awake through each watch of the night to meditate on your promise. 149 In keeping with your faithful love, hear my voice. Lord, give me life in keeping with your justice. 150 Those who pursue evil plans come near; they are far from your instruction. 151 You are near, Lord, and all your commands are true. 152 Long ago I learned from your decrees that You have established them forever.

ר Resh
153 Consider my affliction and rescue me, for I have not forgotten your instruction. 154 Champion my cause and redeem me; give me life as you promised. 155 Salvation is far from the wicked because they do not study your statutes. 156 Your compassions are many, Lord; give me life according to your judgments. 157 My persecutors and foes are many. I have not turned from your decrees. 158 I have seen the disloyal and feel disgust because they do not keep your word. 159 Consider how I love your precepts; Lord, give me life according to your faithful love. 160 The entirety of your word is truth, each of your righteous judgments endures forever.
Read More Of His Words

The Original Intent

1) How often does the psalmist turn to God when he is overcome by fear or dread? (verses 145-148)

The short answer: Day and night! The wording in verses 147-148 reflects a “24/7” kind of communion with his Creator. Day and night are part of man’s normal experience, the psalmist being no exception. (Psalm 74:12-17)

A glorious grace of being God’s child is His constant presence, whether late at night, early morning hours, or anytime between. We often observe from biblical authors an awareness of God’s eternal, timeless nature from Genesis to Revelation.

Think with me about the song of the angels in Revelation 4:1-8. The psalmist lived in this knowledge of God’s nearness. He rose before dawn and cried out to the Lord, and through each watch of the night he rehearsed God’s promises. The motive of the psalmist is observed in verse 145. He called to the Lord with all his heart!

We may not fully understand the nearness of God to humanity (especially in the Old Testament), but Scripture clearly teaches the presence of God is central to His mission of redeeming us to Himself. (Psalm 139:1-18) God’s ultimate plan includes the Lord Himself dwelling with us. (John 1:14)

Since God includes Himself in the salvation story, people have always recognized the Lord being magnificently above, below, and around us always. (Joshua 2:10-11) But we must remember, God doesn’t connect to humanity because He needs something from us; He draws near out of the abundant goodness of who HE is. The psalmist understood something important: he had an ongoing relationship with his Creator because of God’s coming near!

The psalmist continually called out to God from his heart. Through the day and the night, he walked with God by obeying His word, putting hope in His word and meditating on His word.

The Everyday Application

1) How often does the psalmist turn to God when he is overcome by fear or dread? (verses 145-148)

The psalmist’s words remind us it is scarcely about the ‘when’ of prayer, rather the focus is fully upon the Who! Whenever we call out to God, He is actively present and fully engaged with us whether we feel like it or not. (Psalm 46:1) It’s not just about His presence, it’s about His essence. He IS Emmanuel, God with us.

When King Ahaz refuses to make a request of God, even after God tells him to do so, the prophet Isaiah tells him he is trying God’s patience. The prophet then makes a declaration familiar to many of us (we often recite it at Christmas). He tells Ahaz that a sign will indeed be given to demonstrate God’s presence among the people. (Isaiah 7:14)

God kept that promise as Jesus was born. John wrote to us about this miraculous sign when he shared how God had lived among humans to reveal just how near He has always been.

I can tell you from my own experience, God’s nearness is very real to me as I read His word and make my requests known to Him. I can’t prove it to you, but I do KNOW it for myself. Just like the psalmist, I have found assurance and comfort through obeying His Word, which has become increasingly more precious to me. (1 John 2:3-6)

There’s something about abiding in Christ through following His instruction that draws me near to Him as His faithful love keeps me close. Don’t believe me? Try for yourself; “Taste and see that the Lord is good!” (Psalm 34:8)

The Original Intent

2) What notable characteristics of God does the psalmist rehearse, especially in light of his present circumstances? (verses 149-152)

“Hear me … and give me … in keeping with Your love and Your justice
.” (verse 149) The psalmist rehearses two characteristics of God appearing to be in opposition! Yet there’s refreshing insight in this verse that shines a bright spotlight on the God of the psalmist. Sister, let’s plunge our minds into the depth of the psalmist’s prayer made to a God of love and justice.

Most of us would consider justice to be an administration of deserved punishment for an offense, whereas mercy pardons and forgives the offender by overlooking the offense. In these two attributes of God, we are presented with the greatness of our God from seemingly incompatible characteristics.

The psalmist declares the sovereign goodness of God in both His mercy and His justice. As he was being pursued by his enemies, the psalmist needed to know God would supply both perfectly! (verse 150) It is this God whose presence is near the psalmist and whose love (verse 149) and law (verses 151-152) are forever.

I imagine the psalmist remembered the song of Moses (Deuteronomy 32:3-4) given to the people regarding the Lord and His justice. (verses 151-152) It’s important to identify how our God of justice is different from all other gods. In most religions, a deity who exhibits mercy would be forced to brush aside justice. In such a circumstance, the requirements of moral law would be disregarded. But through God’s plan of redemption we see His truly unique character.

Though God is right to judge His enemies, it turns out we are all on that list. (Romans 5:8) So God’s justice is met with His mercy at the cross. He forgives us and extends mercy because He declared it so on the merit of His Son. (1 John 1:5-9) His just wrath was poured out in full on Jesus, while He extends the offer of forgiveness and mercy to us! The psalmist clung to the God who is both just and merciful.

The Everyday Application

2) What notable characteristics of God does the psalmist rehearse, especially in light of his present circumstances? (verses 149-152)

Since the format of Psalm 119 is an alphabetic acrostic (the first letters of each line in Hebrew follow through the alphabet), a good takeaway for us is to note the character of our God even in the script of the psalm itself! He is a God of order, never random chaos.

There is purpose, intention, and such depth in Scriptures. Everything we read is to show us who the true character of the Author of Life. It is this God, the Creator, who sustains us amid the flood of fear and dread. (Colossians 1:16-17) The Word and its promises of God had become an anchor for the psalmist’s soul. It tethered his mind to the truth when lies of despair and disillusionment swirled about him. It enveloped him with inexplicable security when his future looked uncertain.

Friend, I can hardly grasp who I’d be if it were not for the Lord I’ve come to know from His Word. I would surely be found often riding the intense waves of doubt, despair, and discouragement. Maybe you find yourself there right now, unable to lift yourself from the overwhelming sense of darkness.

My dear Sister, with God there is hope! Go to His Word and plead for His presence to be real. Grip His word with your hands and lift it to your heart. Hold it close and pray for its words to grip your heart and make you whole. I believe you will find encouragement, peace, and satisfaction as you uncover His lovingkindness in its pages. (Precept Austin)

The Original Intent

3) What requests does the psalmist bring to the Lord? (verses 153-160)

The psalmist brings several requests to the Lord in these verses: Consider me, rescue me, champion me, redeem me, and give me. How can the psalmist be so bold to ask such things of the God of the universe? It is because he knows Him and he obeys Him. Not perfectly, of course, but performance is not the focal point, the intimacy and familiarity of relationship is the emphasis.

In verse 153, the psalmist uses the connecting word “for.” When we read that word, we must ask ourselves what was said before and make a clear connection for proper understanding. The psalmist wasn’t being arrogant with God, but truthful and transparent. I think he was possibly even reminding himself why he could make such a request.

To the best of his ability, the psalmist had been true to God’s laws. Did he remember what God had said to the children of Israel years before? (Deuteronomy 30:11-20) Had he seen the faithfulness of God amid the unfaithfulness of His people? Certainly, God’s people ebbed and flowed when it came to remembering God’s law. Mostly they ebbed. (Hosea 4:1-7)

But the psalmist had followed God wholeheartedly, and now he was sincerely asking God to keep His promises. The psalmist presents a case before God just as others in Scripture had done before him. Job defended himself to his friends, but it was aimed at the Lord. (Job 23:1-4, 10-12)

Whether or not he was completely in the right, Job used his obedience as a witness to his character. It doesn’t appear the psalmist was disrespecting God but was demonstrating the relationship he had with God as compared to those who didn’t. Those far from God had brought the distance on themselves through their active rebellion. (verse 155)

Unlike the psalmist, they had turned from His laws and had not been faithful to God nor kept His word. (verses 157-158, Psalm 1:1-6)

The Everyday Application

3) What requests does the psalmist bring to the Lord? (verses 153-160)

I read these words from the psalmist and I recognized immediately how often I pray weak-willed prayers. The psalmist wasn’t pleading his case on his own merit. He was pleading his case on the merit of God’s word!

If there’s anything we learn from the psalms, it’s how to pray honest prayers. Even bold ones! Friend, there is no request we can’t bring before our God.

Our confidence isn’t based on what we bring or don’t bring to the prayer; it’s solely based on the God to whom we pray. (Hebrews 4:16)

I don’t believe the psalmist was presenting his case before God as a condition of belief or obedience, but as confirmation that he had walked intimately with Him for the right reasons. He wasn’t reminding God, as much as he was rehearsing before God, what He knew to be true about God.

“In Job’s uttermost extremity he cried after the Lord. The longing desire of an afflicted child of God is once more to see his Father’s face. His first prayer is not, ‘Oh that I might be healed of the disease which now festers in every part of my body!’ nor even, ‘Oh that I might see my children restored from the jaws of the grave, and my property once more brought from the hand of the spoiler!’ but the first and uppermost cry is, ‘Oh that I knew where I might find HIM who is my God! That I might come even to His seat!’

God’s children run home when the storm comes on. It is the heaven-born instinct of a gracious soul to seek shelter from all ills beneath the wings of Jehovah. ‘He that hath made his refuge God,’ might serve as the title of a true believer.” (spurgeon.org)

I was miserable.
I was also desperate for the Lord in ways I had never been before.

Many nights, as tears streamed down my face, I clutched my Bible to my chest. John 1:1 says the Word was with God and the Word was God.
In those moments,
I was literally holding Him close.

Pray His Words Back To Him!

2 Corinthians 4:7-9, 16-18

“Now we have this treasure in clay jars, so that this extraordinary power may be from God and not from us. We are afflicted in every way but not crushed; we are perplexed but not in despair; we are persecuted but not abandoned; we are struck down but not destroyed…Therefore do not give up…For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory. So we do not focus on what is seen but what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

Prayer Journal Entry

Yahweh, life has been heavy lately for all of us. There is brokenness in this world we each feel. In this, remind us how desperately incomplete we are without You!

As loved ones and strangers alike inflict pain on me, Lord, please give me a heart that reflects Your love. You delight in mercy (Micah 7:18), and it was Your Son who taught us to forgive tenfold, not for the purpose of counting tallies against our brothers and sisters who hurt us, but with the knowledge that You forgive us everyday for our own sins. (Matthew 18:22, 35) You are the only One who can make our spirits feel whole, God, and I want so badly to show others what wholeness in You looks like!

When my mind and body grow weary in suffering, simplify my thoughts, God, and focus them on Your sweet, unending, incomprehensible love, Lord. Be my strength in these times of trouble and straighten my path so my steps do not falter. (Psalm 37:31, 39-40) I pray for my brothers and sisters in this same way, that we may be blameless in Your eyes, Yahweh. May it be as You’ve said that on the day of judgement, we will know You and will be made whole, praising You in all Your glory. It is in Your Son’s name I pray this, Amen.

Worship Through Song

Journal Prompts

JOURNAL ONE

A beautiful thing about God is His inclination toward mercy and forgiveness. He’s the purest embodiment of love, and we are made in His image! (Genesis 1:26) God shows us the ultimate act of love when Jesus died on the cross for our sin then resurrected, reconciling us to God so we may live with Him eternally. (2 Corinthians 5:18-19)

Eternal life with Him starts now and He has called us to spread the news of this ministry of reconciliation to lost souls in this life. (2 Corinthians 5:19-21) If we view our daily interactions and conflicts through this lens, forgiveness and mercy will come naturally. We have all been hurt and we have all hurt others, but with God as our example, we can reconcile our relationships.

Challenge yourself to understand why someone may have wronged you; ask questions and communicate your pain to them. If you wronged someone else, listen to them and allow them to feel heard. This creates a space to restore what was broken and move forward with love and hope rather than hate and fear. Remember, we are each more similar to one another than different, and often, we share the same fears.

JOURNAL TWO
Faith cultivates hope and hope presses us into action. The Bible overflows with beautiful promises of God and, as we place our faith upon His trustworthy word, He calls us into action.

By studying the visions of Living Water and the Tree of Life (Revelation 22:1-7), we allow ourselves to be filled with the Lord’s joy and urgency of our mission. We must trust God’s timing and recognize our duty today to carry out the Great Commission of Christ. He commands us to spread the news of the Gospel and the Ministry of Reconciliation to the ends of the earth while we still have time! (Matthew 28:18-20)

How do we begin this enormous task with our God’s Spirit living inside us and our brothers and sisters in Jesus linking arms together around the globe?

Don’t overcomplicate it; invest in those around you. Perhaps it means volunteering at local soup kitchens and shelters, donating items and time, mentoring troubled children, or tithing at church. Or it may look like reaching out to someone at work or in your Bible study and spending intentional time with them. It can look like prayer groups and coffee dates and serving at church. Jesus made an impact by investing in people; let’s follow His example!
JOURNAL THREE
“Sonder” is an informal word (not in the dictionary) meaning the realization that each person, even strangers passing by, have a life as complex as one’s own. Every human being has a story; each has a past and a future; each has made mistakes, found success, and will do so again. Jesus came to forgive it all.

In each of their stories these brave women shared, we see how difficult expressing pain and sorrow can be, but God is present. (Psalm 147:3; 34:17-18). In their stories, we realize we aren’t alone in our doubt and stress, but God is present (Philippians 4:7).

We all struggle with worry and anxiety, especially when plans don’t go as we expect, but God is present (Matthew 6:34). Through others’ stories, we remember we are not alone, but we’re also reminded how God is moving in our lives.

I challenge you to share how God has made you whole with someone in the next week and experience the joy of God’s stories in us used for His glory. Who knows what doors and fruitful conversation will open when we share about Jesus!

Worship Through Journaling

Worship Through Journaling

1) Know what’s good about tomorrow? It’s a new day! A clean slate. It’s even better when you know your new day comes with new mercies from God. On Monday we took a deep dive into Psalm 103 and a dip into Deuteronomy. We learned how to use Psalm 103 as a tool for pausing and focusing on the Lord’s benefits of compassion, faithful love, patience, forgiveness and renewal to name a few. Pause now and write out a prayer to the Lord for each of His benefits He brings to mind. Choose one to focus on and journal how you see it manifested in your life over this weekend. The Lord is so good to us, but how easily we forget He is constantly at work and we are reaping the benefits! We must never forget the goodness in our lives is from the Lord. Write a list of the good things you’ve recognized in your life during this Worship Journey. Praise the Lord for each of them individually. Explore Worship Nine for more on authentic adoration and “real life” worship.

2) “Is it really just noise? Or is it praises to the Lord?” Our Wednesday Journey Study answers this question. We took a walk through several Psalms, which show us how all creation responds to God’s works, which includes us as we praise God for justice and victory. Our praise, however, isn’t just intended for our words, but with instruments and songs. Our praise should be continual, in our words and in our actions. Let everything in us praise Him! Watch this worship video, https://youtu.be/2phNjrdWE28 paying close attention to the words plucked straight from Scripture. When you are done, journal how it makes you feel about praise and worship. How can you raise the level of your own worship to the Lord?

3)  On Friday, Carol wrapped up the study for us by digging deep into the third verse of Great is Thy Faithfulness. From this highly beloved hymn, we uncovered that we’ve received pardon for our sin through Jesus, our Prince of Peace. He grants us not just peace, but enduring peace. We have the presence of God with us! After all, the Holy Spirit lives in us! It is He who guides us and provides strength and hope. Our God is indeed faithful! No matter our life circumstances, we have nothing to fear. God is always right there with us, sustaining and guiding us. Read through some of the Journeys from Fruitful and journal how you see the fruitfulness of God’s faithfulness in your life. Select one of those journeys and commit to praying thanks for the next week for that aspect of His faithfulness in your life. If you want a real challenge, pray through each one!

Praying Scripture back to the One who wrote it in the first place is a great way to jump start our prayer-life! Pray this passage from Isaiah 40:28-29 back to the Lord and
let His Spirit speak to you through it!

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the whole earth. He never becomes faint or weary; there is no limit to his understanding. He gives strength to the faint and strengthens the powerless.

Prayer Journal
O Lord, My Lord, You are the most excellent God. Lord, as I have read through this Journey, I have been convicted. I do not praise You enough. Everything good in me and everything I have is because of You. There are so many things I take for granted that I should be praising You for every day. Just like Your mercies are new every morning, so my praise should be new and lifted up to You every morning. Lord praise is due You. Let me ever praise You and appreciate all Your benefits because You are worthy.

His Words Before Ours

Romans 5:6-11

For while we were still helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. For rarely will someone die for a just person though for a good person perhaps someone might even dare to die. But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

How much more then, since we have now been justified by His blood, will we be saved through Him from wrath. For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by His life.

And not only that, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received this reconciliation.

Reflective Prayer

Oh Lord, our God, thank You for the great work You have done by setting us free from our old ways of life. Once we were dead in our sins, without hope, striving to make ourselves better. But You, oh God, being rich in mercy, because of Your great love, made us alive together with Christ. (Ephesians 2:4-6)

You weren’t forced to save us, but You did. And now, we can walk in freedom with no more shame, no more condemnation, and no more fear. Forgive me, Father, for the times I revert to my old way of living. I am acutely aware of my tendency to live as though I need to save myself or make myself better.

But You are the one who transforms and makes me new. Enable me to be transformed by the renewing of my mind, shifting my mindset to focus on the truth of the new life that You have given me. (Romans 12:2) Help me live my life as one who has been changed by You, sharing the joy and freedom that comes with new life in Your family.
Pray Scripture

Worship Through Song

Reflection One

God grants a wonderfully freeing, fully permanent declaration in the opening words of Romans 8. No more shame. No fear of condemnation. Both are radically erased because the One we have offended with our sin has freely forgiven us!

The sticking point is two-fold. First, this gift of freedom remains entirely inaccessible if we have not recognized our own sin to the Holy God, repented of it, and chosen to trust Christ to rescue us from permanent death and separation from God. Second, if we have indeed been made free in Christ, the temptation to believe a lie seems to follow us like our shadow.

The lie? That we aren’t really freed from shame, that we still, somehow, owe God and should therefore beat ourselves up for our past sin. Can you relate like I can?! Let’s refuse to let our enemy continue to have a foothold here!

Name that place where you most often find yourself falling into the trap of shame and guilt from sins you’ve already been forgiven from and pray persistently over these. Lay hold of truth and carry it with you in place of shame! “If the Son sets you free, you really will be free!” (John 8:36)
Monday & Tuesday

Reflection Two

Either we live according to flesh or according to Spirit. We cannot please both simultaneously; it is impossible. On Wednesday, Marietta helped us understand we must all make a personal decision to follow Jesus for ourselves.

Our default position before God is not goodness, but an inherited sin nature that rejects God and rebels against Him. Thankfully, what is impossible for us and our natural sin nature, is possible with God when He puts His new nature inside of us!

All believers, those who have been made new in Christ, have certain areas of life where we struggle more than others to surrender to God’s nature over our own. In the span of 3 verses in Romans 8, we find the phrase “mindset” used five times! The key to overcoming our areas of struggle is to surrender to the Spirit’s activity in us, and take up His mindset, which is entirely renewed and different from our sin-nature mindset.

Think about the character of God, really pause to do this! Look up some passages to help like Philippians 4:8-9, Psalm 86:5, 15, and 2 Corinthians 1:3-4. As you consider His heart, His “mindset”, turn your thoughts to your areas of struggle and your old mindset of approaching them. See the difference?! Ask the Lord to renew your mind! (Romans 12:1-2)
Wednesday & Thursday

Reflection Three

I once heard a story of an orphan child who had lived for most of his young life in severe poverty and food insecurity. This child was adopted into a loving and secure family, where there was no question about the source of the child’s next meal. He was fully provided for. However, he would often take food from the kitchen and hide it in his room, keeping it secure for himself. Even though his entire situation had changed, his attitudes and behaviors were still in accordance with his previous insecurity.

For those of us who have come to the place of belief in Christ, repenting of our sins, and trusting in Him to give us new life, we are like that adopted orphan. We no longer need to worry about our security, but we often act like we are still in spiritual poverty. When we sin, we are living according to our old manner of life, but when we walk by the Spirit and set our minds on things above, we are operating in our new identity as children of God.

Colossians 3:12-17 give us one picture of what our new life in Christ can look like. Write out these verses and post them somewhere you will see them frequently. Set your mind on things above by reading and contemplating these verses and by applying them to situations in your daily life.

Pause IV Day 7 Unchanging Almighty

Pause IV Day 7 Unchanging Almighty

Read His Words Before Ours!

Habakkuk 2:2-3

The Lord answered me:

Write down this vision;
clearly inscribe it on tablets
so one may easily read it.
3 For the vision is yet for the appointed time;
it testifies about the end and will not lie.
Though it delays, wait for it,
since it will certainly come and not be late.

Read More Of His Words

Have you ever wished God would just drop a message down from the sky to tell you what to do next? Or maybe send a care package of “patience”, “healing”, and “strength” along with a checkbox list of what to do or where to go next?

I know I have!
I’ve often thought people in the Old Testament surely had it easier because God just spoke from the sky to them. Or set a bush on fire. Even better are the disciples who lived during Jesus’ time who could just ask Jesus a question face-to-face and get an immediate response.

But my perspective reveals a flawed perception of the Almighty God.

God wants to be known by us, and speak to us, that is abundantly clear in Scripture. My tendency, however, is to elevate the “answer” over the “relationship”.

I want the “next” instead of delighting in the walking with Him on the journey.
I’m looking to check off my boxes and make sure I’ve done all the right things.

But God is looking for my heart, to shepherd it, to teach me to trust, to develop my faith in Him as He leads me deeper into our relationship.

How much sweeter His ways are than mine!

In Habakkuk 2:2-3, the Lord assures Habakkuk the vision God had given to him would indeed come to pass. God reminds the prophet the timing is God’s alone for its coming.

Habakkuk would have the choice to trust God at His word or lean into his doubt instead.

God gave very clear directions to Habakkuk to write out the words of the vision detailing the coming judgement so everyone would be able to read and understand them.

The Lord’s Words would indeed be fulfilled.
Judgement would come.

In the same way Habakkuk and ancient Israel had access to God’s words through the prophet, so do we have direct access to God and His will for our lives by reading Scripture. As God assured Israel His words were unchanging and would be fulfilled, so can we have the same confidence when it comes to God. His word never changes, His character remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is trustworthy like nothing else in all of creation!

Listen to His word, heed His message of hope and salvation offered through Jesus, and trust Him with all you have! Grow your relationship with Him by studying His word and practicing listening to the Holy Spirit!

Today's Pause Challenge

1) Pull out your Bible and read Habakkuk 2:2-3 fully through 3 times. Read it slowly, emphasizing different words each time. Let the words of Scripture hang over you as the Spirit speaks to your heart.

2) Each time you read, write down everything that pops out at you, makes you curious, or wonder “why?”. When you’re finished, go back through and you’ll be amazed at the new things the Spirit is leading you into knowing about Him!

3) Write out a prayer of thanks to God for being a God of clarity and wisdom instead of a God of secrets and deception. Ask Him for clear understanding where you need it most, and praise Him for how He will provide as you wait for Him.

Bluntly, again in context of their shared relationship, Habakkuk wrestles in plain sight with the Lord.

How could He use an enemy nation to bring retribution against Israel? Can the Righteous One choose to act so far outside Habakkuk’s limited line of sight and perspective?

Will Habakkuk still trust the Lord?

Sketched VIII Day 10 Tamar & Judah

Read His Words Before Ours!

Genesis 38
Matthew 1:1-16
Isaiah 30:18-22

“Judah has chosen you to marry his son, Er!”

“Papa!” my disgust was as thick as the outrage in my voice.

I’d always been too outspoken, and Mama’s quick glare reminded me I’d spoken out of turn, again.

“Tamar!” My mother clicked her tongue and added reprovingly, “Judah is one of the twelve sons of Jacob; you should be honored! Covenant promises with Yahweh surround his family.”

I whirled to face her. My family was well-accustomed to my vigorous debates, and this was one I would not lose. “You know Judah’s reputation! I don’t care a whit whether he’s Jacob’s son, that man has a wandering eye for any woman with a pulse!”

“Well, Tamar, you’re marrying Er, not Judah. That’s final!”

“Papa! No! It’s not fair!” My shrill voice drew the glances of passersby.

Papa responded with tender grace, “Tamar, I love you. You are important and precious, and Yahweh will use you for His work.” He reached out to touch my cheek. “My fiery girl, I adore you. Er has no idea what he’s in for.” He winked and took his seat to bless our meal.

I smiled at the memory. I loved Papa dearly, and he had loved me for who I was. I grieved every day he was gone, but also breathed a prayer of thanks he never had to witness the obscenity that was my marriage to Er.

Er was spiteful and addicted to many things: alcohol, women, and anger . . . but mostly, himself. Whatever Er wanted, he got, until finally, the Lord mercifully answered my pleas for safety. Er was killed by the Lord’s hand.
Truly, the Lord is a God of justice.

In accordance with the Lord’s law, Judah gave me to his next son, Onan.

“Onan.” I spat out his name like a curse. Onan was devious, passive aggressive, and manipulative. Where Er had beaten me with his fists, Onan cut my heart with his words and insidious deception. The death trap of marriage to Judah’s sons was stifling.

My only hope was to bear a child. Even one son would bring purpose to my suffering. Please, Lord, please, I whispered all day and through the watches of the night, grant your daughter redemption.

My situation felt hopeless. Onan only had sex with me for his own pleasure, pulling out at the last moment so I couldn’t conceive. Yet, I knew Yahweh saw all. I clung to my God of justice, waiting.

Mercifully, the Lord did see Onan’s treachery, and He hated it. By Yahweh’s hand, Onan was also put to death. Two dead husbands, a heart damaged enough for a lifetime, and all hope was dashed.

Still, Yahweh was and always would be just, even if I couldn’t see it. There remained Judah’s youngest son, Shelah. I would be close to the end of my child-bearing years by the time Shelah was old enough to marry, but Judah, with some semblance of honor, promised me Shelah if I returned home and waited for him.

Mama. Sweet mama. I nestled my head against her aging shoulder, wrapping my arms around her. “Tamar, my girl, I love you. You are important and precious. Yahweh will use you for His work.” Despite my pride, tears flowed down my cheeks into my mother’s silvery hair. Such faith! Lord, look upon Your daughter! Extend Your just arm!

Shelah’s coming of age came and went. Weeks turned to months as I waited, sure the Lord heard my pleas, but Judah never fulfilled his promise. Word had it, he blamed me for the deaths of his other two sons.

Angry, I cried out to the Lord. Where is your justice, Yahweh?! Have you not seen me waiting, oppressed, and broken all these years?! I have trusted You, haven’t I?!

“Tamar, Judah is heading to Timnah to shear his sheep.” My friend’s bit of information lit a match within me and hope sparked to life. My plan was devious, yes, but I was too angry to care. Yahweh had given Judah the responsibility of protecting and caring for me, yet he shirked his duties. Now was the time for action.

My heart raced as I removed my widow’s clothing, and hurried to the outskirts of Timnah where Judah would pass. Dressed as a prostitute, I was counting on old Judah to be as scandalous as always. I was not disappointed, for moments later, he asked for my services.

I would not be taken advantage of this time. “Give me your signet, your cord, and your staff from your hand as pledge of your payment.” Greedy Judah readily agreed and the deed was done. We both went on our way, Judah to shear his sheep, and me to plead with Yahweh for mercy.

Three months later, Judah’s baby was 12 weeks along.
The Lord had heard! Evidence of His justice fluttered in my womb.

Proof of His abundant kindness washed over me when I safely delivered two sons a few months later. As I held their tiny bodies close, tears streamed from my eyes. The Lord was righteous! Perez and Zerah were proof!

But when the community heard of my sons’ birth, they cried out for my death as an adulteress. As they dragged me to the place of judgement, I clenched Judah’s signet, cord, and staff, calling out for their owner to claim his items, and his sons.

The blood drained from Judah’s face as he put the fragmented pieces together.
I held my breath.

Would the Lord bring justice?

Judah stepped forward, raising a shaking voice,
“She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her my son, Shelah.”

I trembled, in shock at Judah’s confession and in awe of the Lord’s justice.
I would live and raise my boys in peace!

Hundreds of years later, Yahweh further unfolded a plan Tamar wouldn’t know until she reached Heaven: Perez and Zerah are listed in the lineage of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord is faithful and just; His righteousness knows no limits. God used a woman of fierce bravery, fighting through difficult circumstances, to usher in the One who would bring justice and righteousness to all people through His death and resurrection. Never doubt, dear sister, the Lord sees, and knows, and fights for you!

A Note About Sketched

In Sketched themes, we imaginatively step into the shoes of various characters throughout history. Some are biblical, some are well-known in modern day times, and some are people our writers know personally.

We do our best to research the culture and times surrounding these individuals to give an accurate representation of their first-person perspectives on life and the world, but we can’t be 100% accurate. “Sketched” is our best interpretation of how these characters viewed God, themselves, and the world around them.

Perhaps we will find parts of our story reflected in theirs!

When I think of applying the truth of the connection between Tamar and Jesus to my life, I feel so encouraged.

Mostly, I think about the brokenness in my family tree. While I love my family deeply, we are a flawed bunch. Throughout our heritage, there are stories of abuse, addiction, and other sin. This is the same for most of us. Our extended, or even our immediate, families have pock marks of sin and its effects are felt across generations.

When we look at the story of Judah and Tamar, we know we follow a God who is compassionate and who works despite, and through, the broken sinfulness of mankind.

The GT Weekend ~Ten Week 2

August 15, 2020 by Rebecca Adams Leave a Comment

The GT Weekend!

At Gracefully Truthful, weekends aren’t for “checking out”.
Use this time to invite the Almighty’s fullness into you life in a deeper way!
Saturdays and Sundays are a chance to
reflect, rest, and re-center our lives onto Christ.
Don’t miss the opportunity to connect with other women in prayer,
rest your soul in reflective journaling,
and spend time worshiping the Creator who
longs for intimacy with each of us!

Worship Through Journaling

Worship Through Journaling

1) Feelings of disappointment and ‘never enough’ can easily seep into our relationship with our earthly parents. Maybe they are, or were, difficult to please. Maybe you never really felt understood, or perhaps there were so many layers of conflict and communication barriers it was difficult to deeply connect. Maybe your parent has passed and you are left with loss, or perhaps even regret. Relationships are messy and complicated, even healthy ones! Even if you enjoy a rich, close connection with your parent, expectations and feelings of being “boxed in” to a previous role, can feel stifling and awkward. While it can seem natural to place these human failings and struggles onto our relationship with God, He is altogether other. Performance demands have no place. Shame is bound up. Love is unleashed in brilliant colors never before experienced! Where have you placed God in the same category as your parents? Take that to Him and ask Him to reveal His Father heart of love to you in new, vibrant ways!

2) Rebekah shared transparently on Wednesday on how easy it is to fall into the trap of working hard to earn God’s favor. We want Him to smile on us. We want His protection, His blessing, and His favor, so we will work to do things to please Him. There is simply nothing we can do to make ourselves more winsome to God! He hand-crafted us to mirror His own image. He already delights over us, and He cannot possible love us deeper than He already does. Because He is infinitely good, kind, faithful, and true, He adamantly will not love us less. Here’s the kicker, this extravagant love of God is not limited to you or me, unbeliever or church-goer. The Lord views each and every life with the same lavish love, utterly regardless of who we are or what we have done. Who is in your life that you have been hard-hearted towards or stingy with your love? Ask the Lord to shift your perspective, instead seeing them as highly valued and adored as a fellow bearer of God’s own image. How can you begin loving them more like Jesus this week?

3) Cheated. Even saying the word riles our hearts and we begin feeling the need to take up arms against someone who wronged our right or privilege. Take cheating within the context of marriage and the hurt sinks deep very quickly. Maybe you’ve experienced what it is to walk through being cheated on, or maybe you’ve been the cheater. Circumstances are complicated, reasons and justifications abound as quickly as the hurt does, and the trail back to where the distrust began is long and usually involves more than one party in the relationship. God didn’t design us for heartbreak. His perfect intention was for us to find delight in another and sink deep into trust as both people love the other unconditionally. Maybe you find your eyeballs rolling into your head at this point because this description feels so unlikely. Remember the heart of this specific commandment is to point towards a God who will absolutely never be unfaithful and will also always love us unconditionally. Focus on investing in the only relationship that will not leave you hungry for more. What can you do to develop your relationship with God more deeply?

Praying Scripture back to the One who wrote it in the first place is a great way to jump start our prayer-life! Pray this passage from 2 Peter 1:3-4 back to the Lord and
let His Spirit speak to you through it!

His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. By these He has given us very great and precious promises, so that through them you may share in the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desire.

Prayer Journal
Father God, I love this passage of Your Word and the truths You speak of here. You have given everything I need for life and godliness simply by leaning deeper and deeper into knowing You! You are unfathomable accessible. Lord, I truly could sit and ponder this extravagant love for the rest of my days and never have plumbed its depths. Your glory and goodness have been made known to me in every moment; You are waiting to be embraced and known more fully by me. Every breath I take is an invitation to know You better! Oh Lord, how distracted I become by focusing on the fleeting things and passions I can see with my eyes or feel in my heart! I will quickly shift my gaze off of You for lesser loves. Yet, Your truth revealed here speaks wonderfully that I do not need to fall prey to these desires to chase the lesser. In You alone is my fullness found. Keep my heart here next to Yours, remind me how sweet Your truth and love are to my soul!

The GT Weekend! ~ Here Week 2

December 21, 2019 by Rebecca Adams Leave a Comment

The GT Weekend!

At Gracefully Truthful, weekends aren’t for “checking out”.
Use this time to invite the Almighty’s fullness into you life in a deeper way!
Saturdays and Sundays are a chance to
reflect, rest, and re-center our lives onto Christ.
Don’t miss the opportunity to connect with other women in prayer,
rest your soul in reflective journaling,
and spend time worshiping the Creator who
longs for intimacy with each of us!

Worship Through Journaling

1) Think about those moments when you have been utterly caught off guard by the Holy One. You are living your mundane, breathing in and out, and suddenly, you realize it, He Is Here. He is speaking. He is calling. He knows your name, your face, and your story. Pause to reflect on how you have most recently encountered the God of the Universe. It probably wasn’t angels singing and a heavenly message delivered with swirls of light, but be assured, if you haven’t heard from the Lord lately, it’s not because He doesn’t want to speak to you. Draw near Him with a humble heart, bring all you have, offer it up, and let His Spirit speak to your heart through His powerful Word!

2)  “I have no room for another” was Herod’s mantra. His perspective on Bethlehem and the coming Messiah gives me chills as I recede into the light of wanting to find myself at the manger with the shepherds. But, am I being honest? Can I find myself here as well, in the cold-hearted, clenched-fisted heart of King Herod? I am learning to love my Savior more every day, but I would be flat-out lying to you if I said there aren’t places where I throw my own gauntlet at the wall and scream in defiance, “I have no room for another!”. I want my way, apart from Christ, at various moments and in various seasons. Do you? Pray through some of those areas, as I do the same. May the true King soften our hearts and teach us to love Him most!

3)  It’s easy to forget Simeon’s role in the Christmas story. Jesus is only 8 earth days old, yet the Timeless One had pre-determined to encounter one man in the temple that day. One man who had waited his entire life for God to prove faithful to His Word. Here, in the waiting, do you see your face in this mirror held up by Simeon? One glimpse, only a few moments, after waiting a lifetime, but it was more than enough because Simeon saw the faithfulness of God towards himself, and all peoples. Chances are pretty good that you’re waiting on something this Christmas. A relationship to heal, finances to turn around, a diagnosis to shift, a heavy sadness to lift, an ache to be filled. And oh, here we wait with Simeon. Turn your eyes of faith to the Timeless One who sees and knows and satisfies in His way and His time. Turn over your waiting to the One who waits for you to lean into Him!

Praying Scripture back to the One who wrote it in the first place is a great way to jump start our prayer-life! Pray this passage from Micah 7:7 back to the Lord and
let His Spirit speak to you through it!

But as for me, I will look to the Lord;
I will wait for the God of my salvation;
my God will hear me.

Prayer Journal
The shepherds waited. The Jews waited. Simeon waited. Mary and Joseph waited. Even the angels waited for this moment in time when You would announce Your arrival and bring hope that would last. Lord, let me not scoff the waiting. Remind my feeble faith to trust. Surely, You who drew the poorest and the most outcast in close as You announced the arrival of Your Son, will not overlook my wait. Teach me to come near, to trust, to wait because I know You hear.
