Pause VIII, Day 15 A Collect Of Praise

Pause VIII ~ Day Fifteen

New To The Journey? Start Here!

His Words Before Ours

Psalm 150

As we enter our final day of Pause 8, I invite you to begin our time together today with a few moments of reflection, particularly upon #HisWordsBeforeOurs.

+ Which Scripture passages have most impacted you these last 3 weeks?

+ Where have you seen the Lord differently, or more clearly, because of how His Word has come alive?

+ In this time of quieting our hearts to better hear His voice, what has He spoken to you through His Word and in your prayer time?

How will you choose to respond?

Today, as has become our Friday pattern, we will respond to God and His Word through crafting a collect. We’ve been looking to the biblical psalms for inspiration, and have already written our own psalms of lament and thanksgiving, based on themes we see in Scripture.

For our final collect, we’ll look to psalms of praise for our inspiration.

Most of the definitions of praise I found involved expressing admiration of God for His holy attributes. While this might be technically correct, for me, the language felt a little . . . flat. Merriam-Webster infused a bit of vitality by adding “to glorify,” and including a list of synonyms, such as bless, extol, exalt, magnify, celebrate, and resound.

You see, sisters in Christ, I don’t think we’re motivated to devote our lives to following the way of Jesus by mere admiration. I admire many people, but I haven’t centered my life on them. If faith in Christ is defined as total dependence on the truth of the Gospel, admiration won’t get us there.

But in God, we find the One in Whose image we are made. (Genesis 1:26-27)

The One who breathes life into our dusty souls. (Genesis 2:7, John 1:3-5)

The One who loves us beyond measure, such that no sacrifice was too great to rescue us. (John 15:13, Romans 5:8)

The One who runs to us in mercy, holds us up in faithfulness, and leads us with patience and wisdom. (Ephesians 2:4-5, Psalm 36:5, Isaiah 28:29)

He is everything.

Whether we praise Him with resounding hymns from life’s mountaintops or broken, choking whispers in life’s valleys, praise rightly reorients us to Him and preaches, to ourselves and to others, of the One in Whom our hope lives.

So today, let’s praise Him!

Thank you for joining us in our third week of Pause 8! We hope you’ll return to our handcrafted Spotify playlist often to be reminded of where the Lord has led you on this journey of pausing, worshiping, and reflecting.

Be sure to sign up for free delivery of our next Journey Theme, Lowly, as we lean in and see the Humble Christ at Christmas (and a few surprise characters as well!).

Meditate & Reflect

1) First, let’s read Psalm 150.

Hallelujah!
Praise God in his sanctuary.
Praise him in his mighty expanse.
2 Praise him for his powerful acts;
praise him for his abundant greatness.
3 Praise him with the blast of a trumpet;
praise him with harp and lyre.
4 Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and flute.
5 Praise him with resounding cymbals;
praise him with clashing cymbals.
6 Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.
Hallelujah!

2) Next, let’s praise Him through song! If you have a favorite praise song, feel free to worship with its melody and Christ-orienting lyrics now!

If you’re looking for inspiration, check out All Glory Be to Christ by King’s Kaleidoscope. (Bonus? We have a Journey Study & Digging Deeper Study to match!)

3) And one last time, let’s write a collect together!

Here’s the format for collects:
1. Address: a name or characteristic of God
2. Doctrine: a truth about God’s nature, serving as the basis for prayer
3. Petition: what is requested of God
4. Aspiration: what good result will come if the request is granted
5. In Jesus’ name: a reminder Jesus is our mediator

Once your collect is complete, bring it to God in prayer.

4) Finally, if you feel comfortable, we’d love for you to share your collect with GT sisters! Drop it in the comments below? Send it via email? How about sharing in our private Facebook Community?

Pause VIII, Day 14 A Collect For New Beginnings

November 28, 2024 by Bri Bailey Leave a Comment

Pause VIII ~ Day Fourteen

New To The Journey? Start Here!

His Words Before Ours

Isaiah 43:19-21
1 Corinthians 1:4-9
Psalm 36:5-9
Matthew 28:16-20

Well, sisters, we’ve arrived at our final pre-written collect! Tomorrow, we’ll once again look to the Psalms for inspiration to write our own collects, and then the GT community will transition to a new theme. (oh, hello, Christmas!)

As our time together in this theme, and the year itself, draw to a close, I invite all of us to engage in introspection.

If you’re a journal-er, grab your current journal and favorite pen; if journaling isn’t your thing, simply find a quiet place to reflect on these questions.

What has God said to you over the last 3 weeks? This year?

How has your understanding of the Gospel deepened or changed over the last 3 weeks? This year?

As you consider the rhythms of your relationship with God, is there anything He’s leading you to shift in the weeks, or year, ahead?

How have you experienced God’s faithfulness in the last few weeks? This year?

(Even if you’re not a journal-er, make note of these testimonies, so they can serve as touchstones in the weeks, and year, ahead.)

Where might God be leading you into a new beginning in the weeks, or year, ahead?

Sisters in Christ, it has been an honor to spend the past three weeks walking, praying, and growing together.

I’d like to leave you with this blessing from Scripture:
“May the LORD bless and protect you;
may the LORD make His face shine on you
and be gracious to you;
may the LORD look with favor on you
and give you peace.”
(Numbers 6:24-26)

A Collect for New Beginnings
Compassionate Father,
whose mercy offers us a fresh start:
as we step into a new place, embolden us with Your ever-presence,
that we may walk with sure feet, confident in Your faithfulness, and tender hearts, prepared to grow and learn,
through the One who gifts us our greatest new beginning, amen.

Today’s Collect Components
Address: Compassionate Father,
Doctrine: whose mercy offers us a fresh start:
Petition: as we step into a new place, embolden us with Your ever-presence,
Aspiration: that we may walk with sure feet, confident in Your faithfulness, and tender hearts, prepared to grow and learn,
Mediation: through the One who gifts us our greatest new beginning, amen

Meditate & Reflect

1) Today, we mixed it up and included questions for reflection in the body of the study! So if you skimmed through the questions without thinking through or writing out your answers, we’re not letting ya off the hook 😉 Go do that thing.

2) Together, let’s reread Psalm 36:5-9:
“LORD, your faithful love reaches to heaven,
your faithfulness to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,
your judgments like the deepest sea.
LORD, you preserve people and animals.
How priceless your faithful love is, God!
People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They are filled from the abundance of your house.
You let them drink from your refreshing stream.
For the wellspring of life is with you.
By means of your light we see.”

3) Let’s consider the final question for reflection shared above– Where might God be leading you into a new beginning in the weeks, or year, ahead?-- within the context of this Scripture.

For example:
As you step into a new beginning, perhaps you’ll need His light to see circumstances with depth and discernment.

Perhaps you’ll need to pursue Him as your wellspring of life in a more intentional way, looking to Him alone to sustain, energize, and provide for you.

Perhaps you’ll need to take refuge in the shadow of His wings.

4) Once we’ve applied the Scriptures to our new beginnings, let’s turn to God in prayer once more. Let’s be honest with Him about our (big?) feelings as we reflect on our pasts and approach our new beginnings. Let’s thank Him for His faithful love in the past, and ask Him to keep our hearts sensitive to, and aware of, His faithfulness in the days ahead.

Finally, let’s pray the verses we found meaningful from Psalm 36 back to the Lord God.

In His name we pray, amen!

Pause VIII, Day 13 A Collect For Mercy

November 27, 2024 by Bri Bailey Leave a Comment

Pause VIII ~ Day Thirteen

New To The Journey? Start Here!

His Words Before Ours

Psalm 25:6-7
Ephesians 2:4-5
James 2:12-13
Hebrews 4:14-16
Luke 11:9-13

I think it happens to all Jesus-followers at some point.

You know the moment I’m talking about: the Hard Thing we’re facing has slowly (or suddenly) grown beyond our capacity for eloquent prayer.

Our faith draws us to our Father,
but our words fail.

In the opening to this Theme, I shared about a time in which I felt deeply unsure in prayer. As I explored the Book of Common Prayer during that season, I found myself drawn repeatedly to the Prayers of the People, which contains the refrain, “Lord, have mercy.”

These three words became my refrain, as well, when praying for myself or others in the midst of Hard Things.

But to be honest, I felt ashamed of the simplicity of this prayer. It felt like a cop-out, a failure. I rarely, if ever, prayed the words in the presence of others . . . and I tried not to dwell on my growing certainty God was disappointed in my lackluster prayers.

Then, as I shared in our Collect for A Fresh Revelation of the Gospel, I spent the first half of this year studying the gospel according to Mark, and do you know what I found?

Person after person, coming to Jesus with simple words and incredible needs.
(Mark 5:21-43, Mark 7:24-30, Mark 10:46-52)

Lord, have mercy.

Far from berating them in disappointment, Jesus met them in their desperation with compassion and praised their faith.

In a breathtaking moment of realization, my perspective shifted and I saw this prayer as a faith-filled declaration of a right and holy orientation to and utter dependence on the God of an upside-down Gospel. A Gospel in which the lowly and desperate and outcast and powerless are seen and heard and loved and rescued.

So, sisters in Christ, today’s collect reminds us that when we don’t know how or what to pray, coming to God with incredible need and simple words is a testament to the Gospel itself.

A Collect for Mercy (When We Don’t Know How to Pray)
O Lord,
whose riches of steadfast mercy triumph over judgment:
when our human wisdom cannot find the way forward and we cannot find language in which to wrap our hearts’ cry,
teach us to walk in the ancient and holy way of those who recognize their desperate need and Your boundless readiness to meet them in love,
that we might pray in simplicity, confident our Good Father will encounter us with mercy and grace in our time of need,
through Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

Today’s Collect Components
Address: O Lord,
Doctrine: whose riches of steadfast mercy triumph over judgment:
Petition: when our human wisdom cannot find the way forward and we cannot find language in which to wrap our hearts’ cry,
teach us to walk in the ancient and holy way of those who recognize their desperate need and Your boundless readiness to meet them in love,
Aspiration: that we might pray in simplicity, confident our Good Father will encounter us with mercy and grace in our time of need,
Mediation: through Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

Meditate & Reflect

1) Friends, when we are going through a Hard Thing, God’s heart is inclined toward us with compassion, faithful love, and goodness. (Psalm 25:6-7) He is rich in mercy and overflowing with great love for us. (Ephesians 2:4-5)

“Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in times of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)

2) In keeping with our theme of simplicity today, our prompt for meditation and reflection is straightforward.

What Hard Thing has stunned you speechless in prayer? (If you’re not in that space right now, you know someone who is. Pray on her behalf today.)

Let’s pray about it, coming to God with simple words and incredible need.

3) Begin by praying today’s collect. If you need a bit more inspiration to get going, pray through the Prayers of the People. Then, name your Hard Thing to God, and ask for His mercy. (Mark 10:46-52)

Pause VIII, Day 12 A Collect For An Unknown Future

November 26, 2024 by Bri Bailey Leave a Comment

Pause VIII ~ Day Twelve

New To The Journey? Start Here!

His Words Before Ours

Psalm 46
Matthew 6:25-34
John 5:17-19
Matthew 22:34-40

It’s been election season in the US.
If you live here, enough said.

If you’re not familiar with American politics, particularly in a year in which there are elections across the entire landscape of the American government from the president to local positions, let me just say, it’s a loud mess.

A big part of that mess is rabid fear-mongering.

Throughout this Journey Theme, I’ve shared bits of my experiences in detangling my faith. One desperately twisted-up narrative has been thrown into sharp relief this year: they’re coming for you.

Both spoken and implied within my childhood faith communities, this narrative was always lurking, always shaping the way we viewed and responded to the world around us. Its presence always stemmed from a place of fear.

As I’ve started listening to a wider array of voices and perspectives, I’ve been dismayed to discover this narrative exists across the entire cultural, political, and ideological spectrum.

If you think for a moment, you’ve probably heard it, too. We can all fill in the blank of the villainous “they” of whom our particular subset of society is afraid, but the narrative is always lurking. Always from a place of fear.

Okay, I promise this study isn’t just about politics; politics is just one space of many in which we find ourselves tangled up in knots over an unknown future.

What will be the outcome of the job change or loss?
The diagnosis that changed everything?
The physical or cognitive decline of a loved one?
A child’s immature or reckless choices?
A relationship spinning endlessly out of control?

Whatever its context, an unknown future often feels scary (and we could spend another whole study digging into how we handle Things We Cannot Control!).

While I don’t want to invalidate the reality of our struggles, I also want to encourage us, in our fear, to run to our strong refuge (Psalm 46), the One whose perfect love casts out fear. (1 John 4:16-18) The One who promises to be with us as our future unfolds, and the One who calls us to live faithfully today, rather than in a thousand imagined tomorrows. (Matthew 6:25-34)

“When I am afraid,
I will trust in You.”
(Psalm 56:3)

A Collect for an Unknown (and possibly scary) Future
One in Whom we trust,
our only certain refuge in foreboding days:
guide us along the narrow path
of releasing the weight of a tomorrow unforeseen and uncontrollable
while, in the way of wildflowers and sparrows,
            faithfully following our Creator today.
In the encounters You set before us each day,
may we love You and our neighbors
            inseparably and well
to the glory of your name,
in the surrendered way of Your Son and through the power of Your Spirit, amen.

Today’s Collect Components
Address: One in Whom we trust,
Doctrine: our only certain refuge in foreboding days,
Petition: guide us along the narrow path
of releasing the weight of a tomorrow unforeseen and uncontrollable
while, in the way of wildflowers and sparrows,
            faithfully following our Creator today.
Aspiration: In the encounters You set before us each day,
may we love You and our neighbors
            inseparably and well
to the glory of your name,
Mediation: in the surrendered way of Your Son and through the power of Your Spirit, amen.

{*If one of the fears we’ve named is a them rather than a circumstance, we also need to preach the Gospel to ourselves, reminding ourselves we are all sinners in need of a Savior, and Jesus loves and offers redemption to them just as He does us. Then, we need to repent of self-righteously dehumanizing people made in His image, and commit to heeding His call to love them just as we love ourselves. (Matthew 23, Matthew 22:34-40)}

Meditate & Reflect

1) Today, let’s begin by naming our fears in the presence of our Strong Refuge. *In prayer, let’s bring Him all of our concerns, our spirals, our catastrophizing . . . don’t hold back. He alone can carry this weighty burden.

2) Next, let’s read once more through Psalm 46, jotting down phrases or verses that resonate with our current struggles. Alternatively, check out this list of Scripture passages on fear and perform the same exercise.

3) In closing, let’s choose a single verse or phrase of Scripture on which to meditate. Perhaps a lit candle or soft music might help you focus; alternatively, silence or stepping outside into nature might be helpful. Let’s spend a few minutes letting the truth of Scripture soak into our souls and ask God to meet us with comfort and courage as we face the unknown.

Pause VIII, Day 11 A Collect For Big Feelings

November 25, 2024 by Bri Bailey Leave a Comment

Pause VIII ~ Day Eleven

New To The Journey? Start Here!

His Words Before Ours

Genesis 1:26-27
John 11:33-36
Mark 14:32-36
Psalm 109
Psalm 22

Big Feelings.

To be honest, as a geriatric millennial (I don’t know who’s in charge of naming generations, but I’d like to lodge a complaint, because RUDE), Big Feelings were a foreign concept to me. . . until I had kids.

Then there were Big Feelings flying around all over the place, and of course, different Big Feelings from each of my 3 kids at any given moment. More so, I didn’t have a clue how to handle them.

Of course, their Big Feelings stirred up my own Big Feelings (if you’ve spent any time around kids, you can probably relate), and like any self-respecting geriatric millennial, I did my level best to deny their existence. When I couldn’t, I spiraled into shame and self-condemnation, because we all know “good, Christian” women in caregiving roles are eternally patient, eternally gentle, eternally calm, and eternally kind . . .

Only it turned out, when I finally started talking about my Big Feelings with other Jesus-following moms, we all had Big Feelings. We all sincerely and completely believed they were acceptable and healthy and human . . . in everyone except ourselves.

Aha. Isn’t that how our enemy so often works?

But here’s the thing.
Against a current backdrop of Christian culture claiming feelings are evil and deceptive and to be denied at all costs, we read of Jesus. Jesus, the sinless man who experienced a whole range of Big Feelings. Jesus, who, rather than berating Himself for having feelings, expressed them in healthy ways, submitting His actions in response to His Big Feelings to the will of His Father.*

May we learn to do the same.

A Collect for Big Feelings
Creator God,
who first imagined feelings and lovingly fitted them into our God-imaging bodies:
when we are overcome by the bigness of our feelings, draw us to You, unafraid and unashamed,
that You might teach us to welcome the message of our feelings while submitting them to the leadership of Your Spirit,
through Jesus Christ, the perfect revelation of big feelings stewardship, amen.

Today’s Collect Components
Address: Creator God,
Doctrine: who first imagined feelings and lovingly fitted them into our God-imaging bodies:
Petition: when we are overcome by the bigness of our feelings, draw us to You, unafraid and unashamed,
Aspiration: that You might teach us to welcome the message of our feelings while submitting them to the leadership of Your Spirit,
Mediation: through Jesus Christ, the perfect revelation of big feelings stewardship, amen.

{*Because this is going to live on the internet where misunderstanding abounds, I’d like to clarify: I’m not advocating placing our feelings in the driver’s seat of our lives. A world full of people acting on every whim would basically be a world run by three year-olds, and that’s just anarchy.

Rather, I’m advocating responding to our feelings with curiosity:
**What information are they trying to communicate to us?
**When we interrogate that information, is it truthful?
**How might we need to reframe our perspective?
**How can we express our feelings in a healthy way?
**When we bring them to God, how does He lead us to respond?}

Meditate & Reflect

1) The authors of Psalm 109 and Psalm 22 describe some very Big Feelings; let’s grab our journals and read slowly through these psalms, noting the emotions shared and vivid language used.

2) Next, move ahead in your Bible to John 11:33-36 and Mark 14:32-36; what Big Feelings does Jesus display? How does He handle them?

3) Finally, let’s get introspective. On a spectrum from emotion-denying geriatric millennial to all-Big-Feelings-all-the-time 3 year-old anarchist, where do you fall?

What messaging have you internalized regarding Big Feeling management? (Perhaps from your family culture, church culture, or another source)

What healthy habits do you already have in place for addressing your Big Feelings? What unhealthy habits might need to be shifted or replaced?

4) Scroll back up to the questions I shared for approaching our Big Feelings with curiosity. If these feel helpful, copy them down and post them somewhere easily accessible; or, if you’d prefer, craft and post your own questions.

Extra-finally, let’s spend a few minutes reflecting on our responses to these prompts and, using today’s collect as a starting point, ask Jesus to guide us into healthy ways of engaging with our Big Feelings.

Pause VIII, Day 10 A Collect For Thanksgiving

November 22, 2024 by Bri Bailey Leave a Comment

Pause VIII ~ Day Ten

New To The Journey? Start Here!

His Words Before Ours

Psalm 100

Can you believe we’re already wrapping up our second week of Pause 8?! What a time of refreshing our spirits through exploring prayers of collects this has been! As we did last week, we’ll conclude this week by sharing a prompt for writing your own collect, based on a psalm!

As a reminder, the psalms in Scripture can be divided by content into 3 categories: lament, thanksgiving, and praise. Last Friday, we read a psalm of lament and penned collects for lament; today, we’ll dive into thanksgiving!

Sisters, I admit to feeling a bit frustrated as I began researching this topic, because I wasn’t finding much information from scholarly or reliable sources.

Instead, I found anecdote after anecdote of individuals sharing how thanksgiving, and its sister concept, gratitude, radically shifted their heart postures.

[Personally, I’ve come to think of gratitude as a general attitude of recognizing and appreciating blessings in our lives; I consider thanksgiving a more specific act of attributing those blessings to God and coming to Him with my gratitude.]

As I continued my search, I read numerous stories of people finding thanksgiving to be a self-perpetuating cycle, closely linked to joy.

This aligns with my own experiences, in which I’ve found spirals of discontent, envy, and self-pity can be broken by turning my heart toward thanksgiving.* Recognizing God’s grace at work in one or two areas of our lives raises our awareness, and we begin to see more and more of His fingerprints. Soon, the Holy Spirit forms our thanksgiving into blossoming joy!

Thanksgiving, like many spiritual disciplines, requires practice. So today, we’re going to practice thanksgiving by writing a collect.

First, read through psalm 100.

Next, worship with this hymn of thanksgiving, Let All Things Now Living.

Now, it’s time to write! As a reminder, here’s the format for collects:

  1. Address: a name or characteristic of God
  2. Doctrine: a truth about God’s nature, serving as the basis for prayer
  3. Petition: what is requested of God
  4. Aspiration: what good result will come if the request is granted
  5. In Jesus’ name: a reminder Jesus is our mediator

*Sisters, life is hard. It’s okay to be honest about our struggles; please don’t misinterpret my call to thanksgiving as a directive to ignore suffering. We can hold both lament and thanksgiving in our hands; at times, we may lean more into one, without losing sight of the other.

Meditate & Reflect

1) Once your collect is complete, bring it to God in prayer.

2) If you feel comfortable, we’d love for you to share your collect with GT sisters! Drop it in the comments below? Send it via email? How about sharing in our private Facebook Community?

3) Don’t forget to choose worship this weekend by letting your heart come to the Father as you engage with our handcrafted Spotify Playlist for Pause VIII!

Pause VIII, Day 9 A Collect For A World Too Broken

November 21, 2024 by Bri Bailey Leave a Comment

Pause VIII ~ Day Nine

New To The Journey? Start Here!

His Words Before Ours

Mark 14:32-36
Galatians 4:4-7
John 11:28-36
Acts 3:19-21
Psalm 6

I’m about to share a significantly unoriginal thought.

(How’s that for an open?)

Nonetheless, the first time I encountered this concept in a random Instagram post I can’t track down, it resonated with me, so I’d like to share it with you, too.

Those of us who live in developed nations, with ready access to the internet and worldwide news, can easily find ourselves inundated with staggering amounts of reports on the horrific, gutting, soul-crushing suffering happening throughout the world on a daily basis.

This tidal wave of suffering, of oppression, of cruelty and injustice, can easily drown our capacity to respond in a meaningful way; we are simply overwhelmed by the enormity of an entire world broken.

Perhaps, the author of the post postulated, we aren’t meant to carry the weight of the world’s suffering. (Perhaps, I’d add, only one Person, one God-man, could carry such a burden.)

While simultaneous awareness of suffering in countless locations across the world is a fairly recent phenomenon, the brokenness itself is as old as humanity. I’ve spent the last 2 years reading through the Bible chronologically, and one of my big take-aways has been the dumpster fire that is humanity, right from the beginning.

The world has been broken, and will continue to be broken, until Jesus brings full restoration. This collect is for those moments when we’re frozen, overwhelmed into inertia, by the enormity of the suffering in our own lives, in our local communities, and across the world.

My hope for this collect is to begin a conversation with God about how to live in a Christ-like way in our world, responding to its brokenness with empathy, compassion, and justice.

A Collect for a World Too Broken
Abba Father,
whose Beloved Son wept with His suffering image-bearers:
when we stagger under the immensity of the world’s brokenness, comfort us with Your presence in our lament,
that we might labor for Your compassionate justice in this world while waiting in hope for Your full restoration of all things,
through Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

Today’s Collect Components
Address: Abba Father,
Doctrine: whose Beloved Son wept with His suffering image-bearers:
Petition: when we stagger under the immensity of the world’s brokenness, comfort us with Your presence in our lament,
Aspiration: that we might labor for Your compassionate justice in this world while waiting in hope for Your full restoration of all things,
Mediation: through Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

Meditate & Reflect

1) First, let’s bring the brokenness weighing on our hearts to God. Grab your journal and lament such suffering. (What does it mean to lament? Check out Pause VIII, Day 5 to learn more!)

2) Next, re-read John 11:28-36, and reflect on Jesus’ response to suffering and loss. How can we emulate His compassion and empathy? What action might He be leading you to take?

3) Finally, check out Hosea 12:5-6. Our love for our neighbors must motivate us to seek justice on their behalf; how might God be leading us to pursue loving justice for those affected by the world’s brokenness? What action might He be leading you to take?

Pause VIII, Day 8 A Collect On The Wildness Of God’s Grace

November 20, 2024 by Bri Bailey Leave a Comment

Pause VIII ~ Day Eight

New To The Journey? Start Here!

His Words Before Ours

Ephesians 2:8-10
Numbers 6:22-27
John 1:14-18
Titus 2:11-13

The wildness of God’s grace.

Let the phrase sit with you for a moment.
Form its words with your mouth, and listen to their sound as you say them aloud.
Invite your imagination to the conversation; what does your mind’s eye see as you contemplate these words?

Earlier this year, my pastor coined this phrase in a sermon. The language arrested my attention in the moment; then, in the end-of-service bustle, it faded into the background.

But it didn’t stay there, and when I next sat down to write, it quickly beckoned my attention once more.

The wildness of God’s grace.

In faith communities, grace is often thought of as God’s unmerited favor. Scripture teaches us it’s an integral part of God’s character (Psalm 145:8), and foundational to our salvation. (Ephesians 2:8-10)

Yet, to be honest, I think I’ve made God’s grace pretty small and pretty safe.

Can you relate?

Sometimes, we believe God’s grace is only for people who look like us. Think like us. Sin like us.

And sometimes, we shrink His grace even more, believing He extends to us (or others) a dollop of grace buried under a truckload of disapproval.

A little grace, and a whole lot of disappointment.
A little grace, and a whole lot of qualifications and stipulations.
A little grace, and a whole lot of “only if you ________.”

Well, that’s not really grace at all, is it?

If we must fulfill a checklist to receive grace, it’s no longer unmerited.
Sisters in Christ, the way of the Creator of the universe is not small and safe.
The way of Jesus, the way of the cross, the way of an empty tomb is not small and safe.

Will you link arms with me, leaving behind small and safe, following Jesus into the wildness of God’s grace?

A Collect for the Wildness of God’s Grace
Gracious God,
whose boundless love for all people births a grace incomprehensible:
gentle our death-grips on the boundary markers we’ve staked around Your grace,
that we might abandon the safety of our judgements–against others and ourselves– and step into the wilds of an upside-down Gospel
overflowing with grace for the soul-sick, the weary, the desperate,
through Jesus Christ, grace personified, amen.

Today’s Collect Components
Address: Gracious God,
Doctrine: whose boundless love for all people births a grace incomprehensible:
Petition: gentle our death-grips on the boundary markers we’ve staked around Your grace,
Aspiration: that we might abandon the safety of our judgements–against others and ourselves– and step into the wilds of an upside-down Gospel
overflowing with grace for the soul-sick, the weary, the desperate,
Mediation: through Jesus Christ, grace personified, amen.

Meditate & Reflect

1) Today, we’re going to be very, very honest with ourselves. Begin by re-reading Ephesians 2:8-10 and Titus 2:11-13.

2) Grab your journal and write out your thoughts on the following questions:
• What role does God’s grace play in your salvation?
• What areas of your life have been redeemed by His grace?
• What areas are you keeping outside the reach of His wild grace?

3) Now check out Numbers 6:22-27, and journal your reflections on these questions:
• Why is it important for us to embrace and bless others with God’s grace?
• To whom is it easy for you to show His grace?
• To whom is it hard for you to show His grace?

4) Next, fill in the blank, as many times as necessary: I receive/show a little bit of grace and a truckload of __________________.

5) Finally, let’s spend some time in prayer. Bring your responses to the above prompts to God, thanking Him for the wild grace He’s shown you. Let’s ask Him to guide us courageously into wildness as we both receive and share His grace!

Pause VIII, Day 6 A Collect In Exhaustion

November 18, 2024 by Bri Bailey Leave a Comment

Pause VIII ~ Day Six

New To The Journey? Start Here!

His Words Before Ours

Deuteronomy 33:27
1 Peter 1:3-4
Isaiah 46:3-4
Luke 15:11-24

The alarm goes off.

We drag disbelieving eyelids open, and groan inwardly (or maybe outwardly, too).

I can’t possibly do it all again today, our minds rebel.

Yet it all must be done, so we haul ourselves, and our exhaustion, from the bed.

In her book, The Gifts of Imperfection, research professor, author, and storyteller Brené Brown describes how American culture proudly wears exhaustion as a status symbol. I highly recommend the book and completely agree with her assessment, but that’s not the type of exhaustion I’m talking about today.

I’m talking about the soul-permeating exhaustion that happens as you scream-cry in the car before driving to the hospital for day 12 of an admission for your child’s new and shocking cancer diagnosis.

I’m talking about the stifling exhaustion that settles on your chest when you’re awake at 4 am, numbly staring into the darkness a week after your parent dies unexpectedly.

I’m talking about the exhaustion that clouds your vision, and fans the panic burning in your gut, as you stare at the growing list of past due bills, knowing the unemployment payments ran out weeks or months ago.

I’m talking about the obliterating exhaustion of caregiving, the kind that mixes with the shame of not doing more or better, with only the devastation of loss as “hope” of relief.

This type of exhaustion can’t be alleviated by re-evaluating our priorities, learning to say “no,” or reworking our calendars. It must simply be survived.

Today’s collect is a heart-cry to the only One who is able to sustain us in the midst of such crushing exhaustion.

A Collect in Exhaustion
Sustaining One,
who is boundless in strength, compassion, and generosity:
when life hollows us to echoing emptiness and we have abandoned desperately clawing the dusty floors of our own storehouses,
let us collapse into You, our Father, who runs to gather us up into Your everlasting arms,
that in You alone we might find endurance to make it through,
an ever-firming faith,
and rest at the last,
through Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

Today’s Collect Components
Address: Sustaining One,
Doctrine: who is boundless in strength, compassion, and generosity:
Petition: when life hollows us to echoing emptiness and we have abandoned the desperate act of clawing the dusty floors of our own storehouses,
let us collapse into You, our Father, who runs to gather us up into Your everlasting arms,
Aspiration: that in You alone we might find endurance to survive,
faith made stronger,
and soul rest at last,
Mediation: through Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

Meditate & Reflect

1) Consider the beauty of a welcoming God depicted in these two passages:

“But while the son was still a long way off,
his father saw him and was filled with compassion.
He ran to him, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him.”
(Luke 15:20)

“The God of old is your dwelling place,
and underneath are the everlasting arms.”
(Deuteronomy 33:27)

Friend, if you are barely surviving in the place of crushing exhaustion, let these words sink into your soul. As you meditate, imagine God seeing you, overflowing with compassion, running to you, and wrapping you in His arms. Imagine His everlasting arms holding you to His chest, safe and loved. Then, tell Him about it. All of it, every honest and painful second. Allow His presence to comfort you. I

2) If your community offers practical support, take it. If they offer to help, let them. Is this something you are willing to do? Wrestle with why or why not.

3) Sisters, if you are not currently stumbling through the wilderness of exhaustion, chances are good someone around you is. Spend a few minutes prayerfully brainstorming to whom and how you can show God’s love and support to someone who desperately needs it. Finally, spend a few minutes interceding on behalf of whomever God brings to mind. This, dear sisters, is the beauty of living in holy community.
