1) The Apostle Paul tells us “We are His (God’s) workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10) On Monday, Lesley shared how Nehemiah saw a need and responded to it. God was already working in his life to prepare him as the one to lead Israel in re-building the walls around Jerusalem. I wonder how often we see a need but choose not to respond. We may feel the heartache, but do we take the next step? Nehemiah saw a great need and his heart was broken, but he didn’t stop there. His next step was going to the Lord in prayer and asking what He would have Nehemiah do to change the problem. He was willing to be used by God to further God’s justice and His kingdom. What great need do you see in our society? Are you willing to do more than shake your head and rant about the problem? Are you truly praying about it and asking God, “What can I do? I am willing to be used by You.”

2) Rebekah reminded us on Wednesday that “When you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” The first step of wise planning according to Scripture is to “Commit your activities to the Lord”. (Proverbs 16:3) Without this critically important first step, we will not succeed with building according to the Lord’s plan; instead we will build our own kingdom. Once God has given us a plan, then we must keep it in the forefront. Satan loves to trip us up, sideline our focus, and discourage us, but if we continue to remind ourselves, “this is the Lord’s plan”, it helps us refocus and lean into His strength instead of ours. I love how Nehemiah said, “The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we His servants will arise and build.” This is exactly how we keep our eyes focused on His plan. Every January, I try to write my yearly goals. Then I find smaller goals within that framework to move towards each month and week. This involves asking God to direct my plans. Do you have some God-directed goals this year? Where can you post them as a reminder to stay focused?

3) Difficulty strikes, and what’s our immediate response? Get rid of it! Either return to the stage when it seemed we were moving forward without conflict, or, if the difficulty is severe enough, abandon ship! However, because the Lord God is sovereign and powerful and faultlessly good, He will always use the struggles of life, whether debilitating and tragic or mildly frustrating, for our good and His glory if we will surrender our building plans to Him. (Romans 8:27-28) When have you walked through a challenging season where it may have seemed the Lord was against you and the opposition was too strong? What were the prevailing doubts you wrestled with concerning the truth and promises of God during this time? As Nehemiah faced personal attack and stirred up trouble for obeying God, he held firmly to what he knew was true; he walked by faith. (2 Corinthians 5:6-7) Spend time reading a few psalms this weekend and keep a record of truths you discover about God. Lean into these truths as you walk by faith, even when you can’t see beyond today’s struggle.

Praying Scripture back to the One who wrote it in the first place is a great way to jump start our prayer-life! Pray this passage from Nehemiah 2:20 back to the Lord and
let His Spirit speak to you through it!

“The God of the heavens is the One who will grant us success. We, His servants, will start building…”

Prayer Journal
Lord God, You are the God of the heavens and You will make us prosper for your glory and not our own. Thank You for beginning a good work in me; I am trusting You are working in me even in this moment and will complete Your work both in and through me. Help me, Lord, to keep my focus on You. Help me to allow You to do the work and as I am your instrument. You worked through Nehemiah to accomplish the building of the wall. They needed to hold their tools in one hand and their sword in the other. May I keep the Sword of Your Word in one hand while I do the work laid out for me. Don’t allow me to become discouraged or give up, for You are faithful both to call us into Your work and complete the work through us. Amen.

1) What a glorious thought! Jesus has gone to prepare a place for His family. For those who believe in Jesus, there is an eternal home waiting for us without tears or pain or suffering. We will dwell forever in the house of God! When was the last time you thought about what heaven will be like? Have you spent time contemplating the majesty and wonder of a God who is pleased to be with His people, creating a place for them that is perfect and beautiful? What will it be like to live in a perfect world, in perfect relationship with God, with no sin to get in the way? Sit with these questions today. Imagine deeply what God has promised us in the resurrection. Look back through the verses Quantrilla referenced in our Journey Study yesterday and visualize the glory awaiting God’s people. Write a prayer thanking God for His good plans and telling Him what you are most delighted by as you consider the “sweet by and by.”

2) Throughout Scripture, our life in Christ is referred to as a race or some other physical competition. Running a race requires stamina and endurance, determination and discipline. How often do we become weary in our day-to-day life between the demands of others and seemingly endless checklists? At times, it can feel more like we are running in a hamster wheel than actually pressing on toward a goal. Regardless of our feelings, our sure hope is we do not need to run this race in our own strength! We can put our faith in Christ and trust in His faithfulness to sustain us. As Lesley pointed out, “faith is a matter of focus.” Are you trusting in your own will power, strength, or ability to “finish your race”? Or are you turning your eyes to the faithfulness of Christ, resting in His power, strength, and ability to carry you across the finish line? Is there an area in your life where you have not fully turned your fears over to Him? Take some time today to consider where you are struggling and reorient your focus in those areas to Christ. Ask God to show you His faithfulness, knowing He does great things.

3) Jesus Christ is the great King of Kings! If we really believe this truth, our response should be one of worship and praise for the great work which He has done. Marietta reminded us that Jesus came to Earth at the end of a period of four hundred years of apparent silence from God. The people had been waiting for a promised Messiah; yet, many did not know or recognize Him when He finally arrived. Have you ever gone through a season where it seemed like God was silent? What was your response in that time? How did God come through for you in the end? Reflect today on the faithfulness of God in seasons past, and let this reality encourage you right now. Perhaps you are currently in a season where God seems quiet. How are you responding to His quiet? Are you continuing to walk in faith, even when God seems distant? How can you press into the waiting season and trust in God as King of Kings, and believe He will be faithful to you? Talk to God honestly today about your struggles, big and small. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you and help you remember His goodness.

Praying Scripture back to the One who wrote it in the first place is a great way to jump start our prayer-life! Pray this passage from Jude 1:24-25 back to the Lord and
let His Spirit speak to you through it!

Now to Him who is able to protect you from stumbling and to make you stand in the presence of his glory, without blemish and with great joy, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority before all time, now and forever. Amen.

Prayer Journal
King of Kings, Lord of Lords, God above all. You are great and mighty, yet You choose to care for the weak and lowly. You are faithful, even when Your people are faithless. Thank You for Your loving kindness towards me. Thank You that my life has meaning, not because of who I am or what I do, but because of who You are and what You have done for me. Even when my days are hard, and my weakness is on display, You are constantly faithful. It is only by faith in You and through Your faithful work that I have any hope of salvation. While the world around me seems shaky, when I don’t know who or what to believe, when my future feels uncertain, thank You for holding me fast. Thank You that I do not need to fix myself or my circumstances. Thank You for sustaining the world. Help me to lay down my need for control and certainty. Help me to trust in Your unending goodness.

Calling Day 6 For This Reason

October 12, 2020 by Sara Cissell Leave a Comment

Read His Words Before Ours!

Ephesians 3:1-21
Ephesians 2:1-22
1 Peter 3:13-22

Calling, Day 6

For this reason.
These are the first three words in Ephesians 3.

Lean in, sisters. Paul is about to explain the motivation driving his life of incredibly challenging, incredibly impactful kingdom work.

What propelled him to get up after each beating?
What kept him going after shipwrecks?
What urged him to declare the Gospel with the same vigor he once used to attack the church?

For this reason.

Paul knew his why. And that made all the difference.

We discover Paul’s why by reading Ephesians 2. Read it aloud as if you were having a conversation with Paul, keeping in mind the passion saturating his words; this would not be a dull, emotionless speech!

Dear sisters, we share in Paul’s why:

We, too, were dead in our sins until God made us alive with Christ through grace, by faith.

We, too, were once far away from God, but have been lovingly brought near through Christ, who is our peace. (Ephesians 2:13-14) Upon His foundation, we too, together with all believers, are being built into God’s holy temple. (Ephesians 2:19-21)

For this reason, we, like Paul, can experience a similar desire to bow before the Lord, to humble ourselves at the awareness of all Christ has done for us. In this moment, overwhelmed with revelation of the mysterious love of our Father (Ephesians 3:1-7), the busyness and strife of the world around us fade away. The incessant cries for “Now and Must Do!” are wonderfully replaced with an eternal, holy urgency. This life shall pass away and we are assured we will spend eternity with Christ.
For this reason, we live with holy abandon!

But what about our co-workers, our neighbors, or the barista at our favorite coffee shop?

How can we share the good news,
the call from death to life,
and the Father’s heart longing to draw them near?

Are we willing to sacrifice our own comfort, or finances, or status
to invite the lost of our dying world into peace with God?

Paul told the church in Ephesus to not be discouraged over his afflictions on their behalf; he understood how his suffering would further God’s mission of sharing Jesus with the Gentiles.

Sharing the gospel will not be without sacrifice. It may be in the form of intense persecution, as Christians in some countries are currently experiencing. It may look like someone’s laughter after hearing the gospel. It could be a harsh “no” when asked to talk about Jesus. It might even just be the inconvenience of obedience when the Lord nudges us to hold the door for someone several steps behind us.

Regardless of what each day may bring, I desire to live with Paul’s boldness in pursuit of Christ and sharing Him with those around me. I want to trust so deeply in the Lord that even my levels of joy and peace in Him declare His goodness.

For this reason, I echo Paul’s prayer in verses 14-21, with an intense expectancy for the Lord to respond.
Will you join me, sisters?

Oh Lord, teach us to share the gift of the gospel with those around us. Strengthen us with power in our hearts through Your Spirit. Dwell within us and teach us how to love those around us. Help us comprehend Your love, which surpasses simple knowledge.

Lord, You truly are able to do beyond what we can ask or imagine. May we live our lives for You and Your glory. Solidify our “why” within us and help us invite others to meet you wherever we go.

Amen.

1) Whose voice do you most commonly find yourself listening to? Yours? Hers? (the one  you love to compare yourself to) Hers? (the one who frustrates and annoys and constantly gets under your skin) His? (the spouse you always try to please but never feel you can) Or HIS? (the Lord who calls you beloved. The Lord who delights over you. The Lord who has wisdom by the truckload to generously lavish on you, even in the middle of the chaos of your everyday.) Take a minute or two to write down the voices you most often gravitate towards and how they make you feel. Then spend some time listening to the Voice of the Lord by getting away for a few quiet moments with Scripture. Write down what you hear from Him!

2)  Who in your life has been a peacemaker as opposed to a peacekeeper? What qualities do they exhibit and how do they treat people? What do you think is at their core that makes them effective at creating an environment for peace to grow? How would you define the difference between making peace and keeping it? Consider your relationships and pray about some specific ways the Lord is calling you to boldly and lovingly be a peacemaker!

3) It’s much easier to choose our way over God’s way, isn’t it? Take stock from only the last few hours, mentally noting how often you chose, or were faced with a choice, to choose your way or God’s way. Which struggles were the most difficult? Which ones were easier? Consider how many of the battles you faced did you intentionally ask the Lord to empower you to make the wise, righteous choice over the one that would feed your own power or desire. Even for committed Christ-followers, we often overlook the Source of our power to live a life that honors and reflects God’s good, kind, loving heart. This weekend, intentionally remember that we can do nothing in our own power or strength, certainly not winning spiritual battles. Only through the power of Christ and His Spirit can we live for Jesus! Submit your will to His and celebrate when you do!

Praying Scripture back to the One who wrote it in the first place is a great way to jump start our prayer-life! Pray this passage from Proverbs 6:20-22 back to the Lord and
let His Spirit speak to you through it!

My son, keep your father’s command,
and don’t reject your mother’s teaching.
Always bind them to your heart;
tie them around your neck.
When you walk here and there, they will guide you;
when you lie down, they will watch over you;
when you wake up, they will talk to you.

Prayer Journal
The desire to follow my own ways and take in the tempting lies of the enemy of my heart is strong. When I am at my weakest moments physically or emotionally, the desire to give in to the enemy feels nearly impossible to overcome. Lord, increase my hunger for righteousness! Especially during the times when I think I would rather satiate my desires with enemy food. Speak your wisdom aloud, call out to my heart, reminding me that only when my feet are planted in Your truth can I clearly see the spiritual battles in front of me.

1) On Monday, Sara shared the difference between “Wonder Woman” and a “Wondering Woman”. How easy it is for us to pursue control in our situations and chase after our solutions rather than slow down and ask the Lord. It’s a challenge to be still, sit, and dwell with the Lord on a regular basis. What would it look like in your life if you intentionally chose to regularly make time with the Lord just to be with Him? Make specific plans this weekend for how you will accomplish this over the next week and let a friend know too, asking her to hold you accountable to really dwelling with the Lord and seeking His ways instead of our own!

2) Bri Bailey wrote, ““I can’t do it anymore. It’s too big, too hard, hurts too much. I can’t.”” Can you, or have you ever, been able to relate to this? In what ways? What specific hurts brought too much pain, what burdens were simply too heavy? How have you walked through those time in the past? What would it mean to you to have a trusted refuge, someone to lift your head when you couldn’t and hold your hand when you were alone? Know that the Lord is exactly that! If you haven’t experienced that from Him, reach out! We’d love to help you connect with a local church community to help you grow deeper!

3) Yesterday, Tawnya shared some tactics she used to keep her heart and mind focused on truth despite her overwhelming circumstances. Consider using time this weekend to do the same and prepare your own heart to be awakened by truth next week instead of overwhelmed. Make some index cards to put in your purse with Scripture truths on them, make a playlist of encouraging music declaring truth to play on your phone, and select Scriptures from this week’s Journey Studies and spend time slowly reading them to wrap your heart in truth.

Praying Scripture back to the One who wrote it in the first place is a great way to jump start our prayer-life! Pray this passage from Psalm 150 back to the Lord and
let His Spirit speak to you through it!

Praise him with trumpet blast;
praise him with harp and lyre.
Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and flute.
Praise him with resounding cymbals;
praise him with clashing cymbals.
Let everything that breathes praise the Lord.
Hallelujah!

Prayer Journal
Hallelujah, what a Savior You are! Your rich character is vast beyond description! To sit here in Your presence is a gift too precious for words. Here, at Your feet, gazing at Your glory, swept up in the beauty of You, my anxieties fall away, the pressures of success fade, and my need for You is filled so sweetly.

Father, to be with You, to praise You, to declare Your goodness is life-giving, but I know I so easily prioritize a million lesser “loves”, counterfeits to You. Bring these idols to my mind that I might confess them before You as You renew my soul to sing and dance for You, Mighty God!

Dwell Day 3 Rhythm Of Rest

October 3, 2018 by Randi Overby Leave a Comment

Read His Words Before Ours!

Exodus 16:22-30
Exodus 31:12-17
Deuteronomy 5:12-15
Ezekiel 22:23-26

Dwell, Day 3

Sitting on top of a mountain in Colorado for a week, disconnected from life and the rest of the world, brings a rest to the soul that is hard to describe.  That time of silence and solitude made my husband and I realize we weren’t doing enough to observe a time of dedicated rest, or sabbath, in our lives.  We were good at disconnecting from work and obligation, rest didn’t feel life-giving. With four teenagers, a full-time ministry position for my husband, a dog, a full-time job for me, a weekly community group, friends, school and much more…the idea of true rest often felt like a cruel joke.  Yet, what we began to grasp was the truth that, if we were willing, we could enjoy the kind of rest God desired.  Intentional decisions and planning were required, but it wasn’t out of reach.

To understand why we were committed to making adjustments in our lives, you first have to understand how sabbath rest serves to distinguish, focus, and remind.

Sabbath Distinguishes
God himself established the idea of sabbath rest on the final seventh day of creation. (Genesis 2:1-3) He took a step back, considered the work He had done, saw what was good, rested, and declared the day holy. He effectively distinguished the seventh day from the other six.  God then asked His people to observe the same pattern of work, labor, and gather for six days; rest, remain, and trust in Him for the seventh. (Exodus 16:22-30, Exodus 20:8-11)

Simple, right?  Not so much…
In our pride, we think we know better.
In our greed, we think we need more.
In our need to be the best, we think we need to do more.
In our need to be important, we think we must been seen.

None of those beliefs lend themselves to rest and pulling back.
Sabbath is admittedly counter-intuitive to our current cultural way of life.  But God’s desire is that as His children, we distinguish between the common and the holy.  Six days are common and we work just like everyone else; but then, there is one day where we are to declare how we are different (Ezekiel 22:23-26).
When we ignore the Sabbath, it ends up looking like any other day.
We’ve declared the common to be enough!

Sabbath Focuses
“Sabbath is that uncluttered time and space in which we can distance ourselves from our own activities enough to see what God is doing.” —Eugene Peterson

Setting aside the cares, burdens, and work of the world opens the ability to reflect on and think about the God of the universe.  Throughout scripture, we see God time and again instruct us to remember.  With the Sabbath, we are to remember a couple of specific things:  God’s work AROUND US  through His creation (Exodus 20:11) and God’s work IN US as He sanctifies us (Exodus 31:13), making us more like Christ.

Not only are we given the Sabbath to focus on our relationship with God, the time also allows us to focus on the earthly relationships that matter most.  We are called to observe the Sabbath with anyone within the walls of our home at the time  – family, friend, co-worker, or someone just passing through. (Exodus 20:10)

Sabbath Reminds
Perhaps my favorite benefit of observing the Sabbath is its purposeful  reminder that I am no longer a slave, but have been set free (Deuteronomy 5:15).  Regularly reflecting on what my life was like without Christ, realizing all God has done to rescue me, and acknowledging that I could not do that on my own, has a profound effect.

God receives the credit.
I remember how imperfect I am.
I am aware of my desperate need for salvation.

Realizing our need for salvation isn’t just a one-time thing.

Sabbath reminds me there is freedom available.
Sabbath reminds me there is a God willing to rescue.
Sabbath reminds me I cannot do this on my own.

Sabbath Isn’t Easy
Coming home from our time in the mountains, we had a strong commitment to adjust how we would intentionally observe the Sabbath; but reality has proven it difficult to remain consistent. Resting well requires us to work well.

To enter into our sabbath time with the ability to remember, focus and be aware of God and His work, we must do the prep work to allow these to happen.  When we do that, we experience the life-giving, empowering and rejuvenating joy God gives as a result.

And then there are the questions….
What’s the right way to do this?
Am I allowed to….?
Is it ok if we….?
What about…..?
Can I go and….?

We can quickly get caught up in the “rules and regulations” of what is or isn’t “Sabbath” to the point that it’s no longer restful.  Mark Buchanan, in his book The Rest of God, provides two principles that characterize a healthy Sabbath: DO NOT DO what is necessary; DO what is life-giving.  Those have become our Sabbath filter. The simplicity has helped us let go of questions and concerns about doing it the “right” way.  Our Sabbath doesn’t look like others, but it honors the expectations that God has put in place for us.  We can follow the command to keep the observance (Hebrews 4:9), yet we have freedom in how that takes shape (Colossians 2:16) through the gifts gained in Christ.

Work hard.
Rest well.
Distinguish yourself.
Focus on God.
Remember His work.

The fight for Sabbath is worth it!

Sketched IV Day 13 Thomas

August 15, 2018 by Sara Cissell Leave a Comment

Read His Words Before Ours!

John 11:1-16
John 14:1-11
John 20:24-29

Sketched IV, Day 13

“Thomas, we saw Him!”
“Jesus was here.”
“He just appeared!”
“…His hands and side.”
“We’ve seen the Lord!”

I looked from man to man, closing the door behind me.
What had I missed while out walking in the darkness?
Peter gestured with an intensity typically displayed when trying to clear a path for Jesus in a crowd, or when his favorite meal was placed before him. Passion was not something he lacked.
Luke responded with the focus of a doctor, describing Jesus’ wounds.
James and John spoke with animated gestures belying the fact they were related.

Regardless of their excited reactions, all of them relayed one thing: they had seen Jesus.
Really?
The crucified Jesus was alive?
And everyone, but me, had seen Him?
How could that be?

These brothers of mine have played practical jokes on me before…
Telling me the new type of knot used to create the net would hold my weight.
It’s a good thing Luke is a doctor!
Or the time we all agreed to meet at a certain spot in the marketplace while they all met somewhere else to see how long it would take me to find them.
Half an hour, thank you very much.

Surely, they wouldn’t joke about Jesus, would they?
My eyes threatened to fill with tears as the emotions of loss of my Savior, combined with hurt at being left out of seeing Jesus, and perhaps the root, arrogant pride as I distanced myself by throwing up walls.

“If I don’t see the mark of the nails in his hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
I moved past them quickly working to control my emotions.
The room felt smaller by the second as they bantered on about “Jesus’ appearance”.

I slept fitfully that night, my eyes staring above me, mind whirling at the thought of Jesus being alive. Possibly.

How? He had been nailed to the cross and breathed His last.
No, it wasn’t possible!

However, Mary had come running to us yesterday morning, saying she’d encountered the Lord. No one discounted her completely, but I’m not sure any of us wholeheartedly believed her either.
We’d walked with Jesus so closely.
Why would He first reveal Himself to a woman instead?
No, it simply can not be…could it?

Now my brothers were saying the same thing.
Everyone had seen Jesus….but me.

I tossed again, frustrated at my insomnia and the endless war in my head.

Why was I left out?
They’d said they were behind closed, locked doors when Jesus just appeared in their midst.
So, He’d risen from the dead and didn’t need doors?
This was too much. And I vehemently turned over, deciding to leave the matter alone.

But the war inside wouldn’t be silent.
If He had supernatural ability to move around, why wouldn’t He wait when we were all together? He knew how much I loved Him!

When Lazarus died and we were weighing the pros and cons of going to Bethany, wasn’t I the one that said we would go with Him, despite the logical side that said we would surely be killed or arrested? I was right, Jesus’ death was indeed waiting in Jerusalem.
Logic and emotion….I’ve battled these my whole life.
Alive again?
How do I embrace that?
I want to believe, I do!
How do I accept what I cannot experience?
My emotion wants more than anything to believe, but I simply cannot.
I must have proof; I must.

I think the guys could tell I hadn’t slept well, nor did I appreciate the joy they exuded every time they talked about Jesus’ miraculous appearance. I wanted to believe, but it hurt too much to acknowledge the rejection caused by the timing of His visit, and deeper still, the constant, forced acknowledgment that I could not believe “their word” as my inner battle raged on.

A week later, wearied and worn from my inner turmoil, I knew I couldn’t carry on like this. I would need to either decide to believe my brothers that Jesus was alive, or I would need to walk away from them, shutting off everything that had happened in the last 3 years of our lives together. I couldn’t do this anymore….the war inside had to end; I was too tired. I was at my end.
And at that moment, when I seemed most hopeless, Jesus once again ignored locked doors and arrived in our midst.

“Peace be with you”, and my head jerked up with shock, and instant grief gripped me, as I knew I had ignored the truth that had been right in front of me these past 8 days.
The sense of peace that blanketed the room felt gloriously weighted.
Jesus turned to me, eyes gentle, knowing my unbelief, meeting me where I was with total acceptance, He invited, “Put your finger here and look at my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Don’t be faithless, but believe.”

I reached out and with trembling hands felt the wounds.
Warm flesh met my finger tips. Jesus was alive!

“My Lord and my God!”, I exclaimed!
“Because you have seen Me, have you believed?
Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

Hours later I laid staring at the ceiling again, pondering Jesus’ words.
I believed because I touched Him, but He said, blessed are those who believed without seeing.
Suddenly, it came together.
I had been seeing all along….I saw the truth in the faces of my brothers.
I heard it in their constant testimony.
I ignored it when I heard truth from Mary.
His evidence was there; it was my pride to shun it.

I would have saved myself much misery this past week if I had just believed the truth in front of me. I knew it had taken more energy to doubt than to believe.
Yet, He loved me enough to meet me where I was.
Just as He has always done.
And with that, I drifted off into the first solid night’s sleep in some time.

A Note About Sketched
In this series, we are stepping into the shoes of various characters throughout history. Some are biblical, some are well-known in modern day times, and some are people our writers know personally. We do our best to research the culture and times surrounding these individuals to give an accurate representation of their first-person perspectives on life and the world, but we can’t be 100% accurate. “Sketched” is our best interpretation of how these characters view(ed) God, themselves, and the world around them. Our hope is that by stepping into their everyday, we will see our own lives a little differently!
Enjoy!
And keep watching for Sketched Themes to pop up throughout the year!

Bride Day 10 The Unrepentant Life

April 27, 2018 by Sara Colquhoun Leave a Comment

Read His Words Before Ours!

Psalm 51:10
Hosea 6
Romans 1:18-28

Bride, Day 10

I’m currently walking through a season of being still before the Lord.

After years of heartache, frustration, questions, and emptiness, the time has come for me to stop talking to the Lord about all the wrong in my life and
start listening to His truth and who He says I am.

I felt strongly that in order to start off this season of quiet, I first needed to repent.
To cleanse my heart of all that had a hold of it.
And so I sat down and listed them off, one by one.

God, I am sorry for thinking that I can be the best mom, wife, friend, sister, daughter, while serving on worship team, writing for a blog, and leading a small group without spending enough time in loving union with You.
Self-Reliant.

God, I am sorry for not acknowledging You for the help that we have received in the midst of job transitions, church commitments, being out of town, or a simple date night. None of those would have been possible without You.
Thankless.

God, I am sorry for not listening to you when You told me to keep loving my husband and serving him the way You have called me to.
Selfish

I’m sorry for not extending grace to my daughter as she stops to learn something new, causing us to be late yet again.
Prideful.

God, I am sorry for using the gift that You have given to me without letting You be used through me every single time.
Arrogance.

I was blind to how my sin added a soul crushing burden to my everyday life. Looking over the list I had just made I knew it was time to hear what the Lord wanted to say, and so with that, I turned the page.

And isn’t that so true of all of us?
We walk this life carrying bitterness towards someone who offended us years prior.
We hold grudges towards our spouse because of something said in an argument.
We try and navigate our life without the One who is the Giver of life, because we feel we are better guides.

We have become a people who think if we haven’t done ‘wrong’ by worldly standards,
or by the girl’s next door,
then we haven’t done wrong at all.
But sweet friend that isn’t true.

The Father’s heart is for His children to come back to Him,
releasing the sin that we have a hold of.
The sin that has a hold of us.

As we’ve journeyed through the book of Hosea for the last two weeks we can see an overall theme of unrepentance woven throughout. From Gomer, to Israel, to us as God’s people, unrepentant hearts are the constant.

In fact, the heading in my Bible over chapter six says:
A Call to Repentance
“Come, let us return to the Lord;
for He has torn us, that He may heal us;
He has struck us down, and He will bind us up.
After two days He will revive us;
On the third day He will raise us up,
That we may live before Him.
Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord;
His going out is sure as the dawn;
He will come to us as the showers,
As the spring rains that water the earth.”
Hosea 6:1-3

Charles Spurgeon notes in his commentary of this passage:
Tender fathers seek first to train their children by gentle means.

The Lord, in His patience, dealt kindly with His stumbling Israel, sending them favor after favor and blessing after blessing. But the more He multiplied His blessings, the more they multiplied their iniquities.
So they spent the mercies of God in sacrifice to their idols and committed transgressions with the false gods of the heathen, consuming with their lusts the mercies God had sent to bring them to repentance.

Walking through this season of being still before the Lord,
of being called back to repentance,
has caused me to realize all of the areas in my life that
I had taken God’s mercies for granted.

And as I turned that page in my story, falling before the throne of the God, with tears, with a broken heart over my sin,
do you know what I didn’t hear?
Condemnation.

You know what I didn’t feel?
Pushback

Oh I surely deserved it.
Sisters, our Holy God is rightfully wrathful to the offensiveness of our sin! (link rom 1:18)
I deserved much worse when I look face to face upon the sin I have loved and then compare it to the pure, un-adulterated, endless holiness of the Lord God Almighty.

But no.
In that moment as I turned my unrepentance into repentance, there was….
Peace.
Forgiveness.
Intimacy.
Love.

Because His wrath against my sin had already been pacified.
With blood.
Not mine, but my Savior’s.

Forgiveness is mine because my Savior pursued me, even in my sin, He pursued.
He fought for me.
He chased me, again and again and again.
And when I turned,
He. Was. There.

With peace.
With forgiveness.
With intimacy restored.
With love un-imaginable.

And right there is the tragedy of Gomer and Hosea.
Of Israel and her Shepherd King, Yahweh.
Love was waiting.
But she kept running.

Israel’s story, Gomer’s story, they don’t have to be ours.
Turn around, sister, lay your sins, one by one, right there at the foot of the cross of Christ,
and stand forgiven, redeemed, and at peace with the Almighty God!

Worship Day 15
Radical Release

March 24, 2017 by Melodye Reeves 4 Comments

Read His Words Before Ours!

Psalm 28:6-9
1 Samuel 1:27-28
Mark 9:14-29

I’ve sat down several times in the last few days to convey on paper my thoughts to the lyrics of a song that I might describe as haunting (as in, poignant and evocative; difficult to ignore or forget). Little did I know that my procrastination was actually working out God’s sovereign timing. I certainly don’t condone a habit of delaying inevitable tasks, but as always God was doing something, even through my postponement.
Letting go of every single dream, I lay each one down at Your feet.
Every moment of my wandering never changes what You see.
I’ve tried to win this war, I confess.
My hands are weary, I need Your rest.
Mighty Warrior, King of the fight, no matter what I face, You’re by my side.*

On the very morning I realized I could no longer delay my writing, I was also made aware of my great need to fully embrace the truths of the song in which I had chosen to meditate. The first two words stabbed me the very moment they caught my eye.

“Letting go…”
I recognized immediately the impact of those words throughout Scripture.
Abraham
Moses
David
Hannah
These are only a few examples of the kind of surrender to which we are called.

Paul’s life and message compel us to an even more radical release of our own wills, reminding us of the most humble and genuine surrender of all through the life and death of our Lord Jesus. Philippians 2:1-11

As a mama and grandma who has kids and grandkids living thousands of miles away, I have learned that letting go is a part of life. As a foster mom, the reality of releasing hits even harder because of the massive unknown attached to it. In the past several years, I have had to let go of how I had pictured life might look and trust God with the unforeseeable future of all the children that He has placed in my care.
Laying things down that I like at my good Father’s feet is one thing.
Laying people down that I love is another.
It freshly and squarely hit me today that
letting go is always the starting point for trusting God.

On this very day, we find ourselves in a place we have never been as foster parents. We have realized that we are unable to provide everything needed for the children who have recently entered our home. The brothers who came through the door earlier this week have experienced difficulties in their lives that I’ll never fully be able to comprehend.
The neglect they have encountered is completely foreign to me.

After several days of looking at my husband with a broken heart, he confessed that he is overwhelmed and underqualified for this particular situation.
Knowing that fostering kids in need like this has to be a team effort (he is an amazing foster dad), I knew it meant we had to make a change.
I have cried and prayed.
I had to come face to face with hidden motives and agendas and plans.
I had to admit that we are not called to save every child.
We are not even called to rescue them from terrible lives.
We are only called to be faithful servants.
I confessed to God: “My hands are weary, I need Your rest.”

You are my strength and comfort. You are my steady hand.
You are my firm foundation; the rock on which I stand.
Your ways are always higher. Your plans are always good.
There’s not a place where I’ll go, You’ve not already stood.*

Sometimes I do the right thing.
Sometimes I do the right thing for the right reason.
And sometimes I do the right thing for the right reason, but with a skewed view of God.

I forget that He alone is capable of doing what is perfectly good.
Only He knows what tomorrow brings.
I may have good intentions in the spiritual battle I’m fighting,
but if I don’t recognize that He is the King of the fight,
I begin to fight for outcomes and answers
rather than fighting for faith.

As I cry out to Him, I too often hold on to a false hope in my own ability to fix and heal.
Only when I let go of all my pre-conceived notions of what should happen am I able to fully trust Him.
My faith cannot be in the moving mountains or the parting waters,
though He is able to do those things, Exodus 14, Mk 11:22-24
rather my trust is to be completely in Him, not in what He does.

When You don’t move the mountains I’m needing You to move;
when You don’t part the waters I wish I could walk through;
when You don’t give the answers as I cry out to You, I will trust.*

The Psalmist communicates so clearly again and again that our trust must be solidly placed in only One Person.
HE is our strength and comfort.
HE is our steady hand.
HE is our firm foundation.
HE is our rock.
HE is exalted.

Yet, everything that makes Him a God who is far above us Isaiah 55:8-9,
doesn’t keep Him from also being a Father who is near and good! James 1:17

I am unable to fully explain how much I needed the truths of this song to permeate my heart and mind today. Letting these kids go is so difficult.
What is the Father calling you to let go of and trust Him with?
Lord, “Truth is, You know what tomorrow brings. There’s not a day ahead You have not seen. So, in all things be my life and breath. I want what You want, Lord, and nothing else.
I will trust in You.”*
Amen!

*song lyrics by Lauren Daigle, “Trust In You”
