Questions Day 11 Why Pray?

March 2, 2020 by Audra Watson 1 Comment

Read His Words Before Ours!

Genesis 3:8-13
Jeremiah 29:12-14
Jeremiah 33:2-3
Psalm 145:14-21

Questions, Day 11

What is the point of praying if God already knows everything?
The simple answer?
Relationship
.

As early as the Garden of Eden where God handcrafted humanity and set them in Beauty itself to enjoy each other, their surroundings, but most of all Himself, we see God inviting His creation into relationship with Him.

How do we know?

Even though He knew the answers (because He is all-knowing (Psalm 147:5)), He still asked Adam and Eve questions.

The Scene in Eden….
“And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. (because they had sinned)

God Asks….
But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”

Adam’s Reply…
And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”

God Asks….
He said, “Who told you that you were naked?
Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”

Adam’s Reply….
The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.”

God Asks….
Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?”

Eve’s Reply….
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.””
Genesis 3:8-13

Intentionally, carefully, with precise accuracy, the Lord engages Adam and Eve.
Not to shame them.
Not to flaunt His holiness before them.
Not to smite them with thunderbolts.
But to show them who they were in relationship to Himself.

God is omniscient.
Meaning He knows everything. (Psalm 139:1-6)
He knows the present, past and future. (Isaiah 46:9-10)
He knows what each person thinks and feels. (1 John 3:20)

Despite knowing every detail, He intentionally asked questions of Adam and Eve.
He asked questions to engage their hearts, stirring them to depth and intimacy with Himself, the only One who could ever satisfy them.

I recently celebrated my first wedding anniversary with my husband.
Marriage has been a very humbling journey thus far. I have learned a lot about myself and my husband, but the biggest lesson we’ve learned is how to communicate.

Before getting married, we thought we knew all about communicating with each other, but as our marriage began, we struggled with significant miscommunication and misunderstanding. About 4 months into marriage, clarity broke through when my husband was diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Shortly after his diagnosis, a counselor helped us learn how to communicate with each other. In these sessions, we discovered we both spoke entirely different languages because we process language and social interaction quite differently. In order to make our marriage work, we would need to learn the other’s language.

While my husband and I both had to work hard and pursue each other to improve our communication, God is, and always has been, the One doing the pursuing.

In Eden, Adam and Eve didn’t walk around the Garden calling out for God, trying to get Him to talk to them and maybe forgive them. No, they ran and hid because of their sin and shame, but God, the Holy One, lovingly pursued and invited them to build a relationship through communication.

They were fully loved,
fully known,
and sought after as precious treasures.

Today, my husband and I are more deeply connected than ever before because we are finally able to talk.

That is what prayer is like!
It may feel strange at first, as if I was trying to learn Mandarin and my husband was trying to learn Portuguese, but the more you invest (because God first invited you! (1 John 4:19)), connection is built, and relationship deepens.
We know God, and we know too, that we are fully known by Him!
This is why we pray!

Prayer is a conversation with God, where He is completely present and fully engaged at all times, creating safety in being known.
It is unbridled.
It is unbarred.
It is untamed.
It is the place where we learn who God is, and who we are in light of Him.

In Jeremiah 29:12, He says He will listen to us.
In Jeremiah 33:3, He says He will reveal what we do not know.
In Psalm 145:18, He says He will be close to all who call on Him in truth.

Sisters, we take time out of our days to reach out to our friends and families via text, phone calls, email, or speaking face to face. These relationships are vitally important, but how much time are we investing in response to Our Heavenly Father’s invitation for relationship? Let’s choose today to begin deepening our communication with the One who has pursued us more than any other!

Know that the “why” behind prayer is solidly anchored
in His unconditional pursuant love for us!

1)  We’ve been discussing and studying in this Journey Theme how beautiful it is for Christ’s fragrance to extend to a dying world through US as believers as we are His ambassadors. Incredible! But we must turn the question on ourselves. How captivated are WE with the presence of Jesus? How mission critical is it for us to regularly and consistently sit with the Savior? How high does cultivating our own spiritual growth in deep ways actually rank when it’s on the same scale as diaper changes, difficult relationships, the DMV, and bills to pay? What would it look like for you to increase your captivation with Jesus this week? Regardless of where you are in your faith journey today, what if the Lord wanted to take you deeper tomorrow? Are you willing to be captivated by the sweetest love of Christ?

2)  Who do you know that’s longing to be loved? Pause and carefully consider the groups of people you feel are beyond your love, or your ability to love? The elderly or those with disabilities? The under-privileged or the exceptionally wealthy? Maybe it’s the diseased or the emotionally unstable? Perhaps they wear tattoos, drink more than you would, stand at the corner of your familiar intersection, or maybe they sit behind you at church and let their kids play and be loud during service. Take the challenge this week and Choose To Love Intentionally. Pray out loud, pray with honesty, pray with confession on your lips and ask God to help you understand how to love those you see as unlovely.

3) Audra shared the visual of believers being like refreshing water bringing life and encouragement in the middle of dry, desert-like experiences to others. Identify a desert season you’ve had in your life, or maybe you feel like you’re in the midst of one now. Who were the people that were like that cool water to you? Take time this weekend to send them a text, write a note, or call them to say thank you for being Jesus to you. Sit silent for a few minutes, thinking through the visual of a desert and living water as you think of your sphere of friendships and acquaintances. Who is the Lord prompting you to bring refreshment for? Make an action plan and step into it!

Praying Scripture back to the One who wrote it in the first place is a great way to jump start our prayer-life! Pray this passage from John 7:37-38 back to the Lord and
let His Spirit speak to you through it!

On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.”

Prayer Journal
There are so many Scripture stories that paint You as quiet, unobtrusive, and silently loving or serving. Often, I keep this image of You in my mind, Lord, viewing You as always gentle, calm, and soothing. But then the Spirit reminds me of just as many recorded instances of You stepping, standing up, and crying out. Bold ways. Brave words. Fiercely following in obedience to the Father. This too is a picture of my Savior, and I’m so grateful, Lord! Get my attention, stand up in the middle of my self-supposed importance, remind I am Yours, remind me I’m called into a mission of living out love for others. Cry out, Abba, shake my shoulders and put my feet back on solid ground. Jesu, I love Thee!

Captivating Day 10 Streams

July 19, 2019 by Audra Watson 1 Comment

Read His Words Before Ours!

Luke 19:1-10
Isaiah 43:19-20
John 7:37-39

Captivating, Day 10

Have you ever written someone off?
Whether in my mind or through my actions, I must admit I have!

I have viewed people as unworthy of investing in a relationship….
I’ve decided they were “too far gone”.
Or their outward appearance repelled me.
Or their beliefs/struggles made me uncomfortable.

Maybe you’ve witnessed a religious organization, or even your church excluding some….
People with tattoos.
Those who smoke, or are heavily pierced.
Promiscuous people.
People with different sexual orientations.

Transparently, I’ve written off someone from each group listed above.
God has shifted my heart towards people, but those God has most laid on my heart recently have been the homosexuals. To help me see His heart, He gave me a visual as I prayed over this and studied His Word.

For this picture, there’s a tree in the desert, barely holding onto life, and a stream of rushing water keeping the tree alive. The tree represents people in hard, difficult places in their lives. The desert represents the wilderness seasons in our lives. And the stream is believers that have living water to offer in that person’s wilderness season.

One Scripture the Lord used to teach my heart was John 7:38,
“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said,
‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'”
Our hearts run with the overflow of Jesus’ love inside of us, pouring out to others in our lives. This verse has challenged me to be ready, no matter what, to willingly allow the overflow of my heart minister to others by the Spirit’s power. It has also softened my heart toward others, regardless of who they are or what they look like.
You never know what wilderness another person is walking through,
or how close they are to giving up.
Pour out His love like life-giving streams!

Another Scripture the Spirit used to teach me was Isaiah 43, specifically, verses 19-20, “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
The wild beasts will honor me, the jackals and the ostriches,
for I give water in the wilderness,
rivers in the desert,
to give drink to my chosen people.”

Isaiah is speaking about God’s heart for Israel to be shining witnesses of Him, His glory, and His work to the world. He is capable of amazing things, even in the midst of the wilderness seasons in our lives, including springing forth rivers in the deserts to sustain and encourage us. By trusting His heart, studying His Words in Scripture, and engaging in biblical community, He will bring peace and His power will flow through us.

Zacchaeus’ story paints a beautiful picture of Jesus’ loving, relational pursuit of us.
Jesus was simply passing through Jericho on His way to somewhere else when He intentionally stopped to engage Zacchaeus. One tax collector, despised and hated, wealthy beyond belief, but living in his own desert of loneliness and purposelessness, desperately needed a stream of hope and love more than even he realized.
Zacchaeus was “trying to see who Jesus was”. (Luke 19:3)

Jesus called out to Zacchaeus and, like a stream of refreshing water, climbed into his loneliness with him by bringing winsome friendship. As a result, Zacchaeus’ life was forever changed and dramatically made new. Jesus came to bring new life, to be a friend to sinners, and enter into dry, desert places to bring revival.

Jesus intentionally sought out those whom religion and society had written off.
He chose the outcasts.
He built relationships with the missional purpose of saving them for eternity and giving them purpose.

If we are to be like Him, and we are all called to be like Him,
then we should choose to enter into relationships with people
that may make us uncomfortable.
We are commissioned to intentionally engage in order to be a river of life for them in wilderness seasons, holding out the life-changing gospel that they too might be rescued.

In my own life, this has been a challenge to walk out.
I have many people in my life that are living homosexual and promiscuous lifestyles and you might too. I have asked God to help me build relationships that honor Him and bring dramatic life change.

I have intentionally built relationships with these people in my life. They have been seeking and searching and unfortunately, the people claiming the name of Christ in their lives have been very unloving toward them. But through our relationship, they have seen that not all believers are judgmental, that some are willing to enter into the uncomfortable conversations to understand and love and walk alongside in friendship.

I can see their hearts soften toward the things of the Lord. It is not my job to change them, but it is my job to love them regardless. They know that I don’t agree with their lifestyle, but they also know I love them for them.

I pray that through our relationship, they would see what God’s love is like and discover it’s Him they are most searching for.

Sisters, I pray we all choose to intentionally be streams of living water to those around us. Not to save them or change them, only Jesus can do that, rather to give them a drink of what Jesus’ love tastes like.
