Training Day 15 The Generosity Muscles

Sara Cissell

February 11, 2022

Read His Words Before Ours!

1 John 3:16-18
2 Corinthians 8:1-15
Matthew 6:1-4
2 Corinthians 9:7-11
Malachi 3:10-12

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Over the last few weeks we have been diving into the Word and focusing on spiritual disciplines. How have you been impacted through this journey? What specific discipline(s) has the Lord highlighted for you to focus on moving forward?

Has silence taken on a new meaning in your life? Or has your perspective of fasting morphed? Maybe you have not sensed any dramatic shifts, but you now have more nuanced understandings of several of the spiritual disciplines.

Before we transition to the next study theme, we have one more training topic to discuss: generosity.

To start, pull out paper and pen or the notes app on your phone. For the next minute, please list ways you can show generosity in your current sphere of influence. Your goal is to think of as many as possible in these 60 seconds. Don’t second guess. Don’t analyze. Simply picture generosity in your world and go.

60 seconds. Set an alarm if it helps.
List away.
Finished?
What was your experience like? What categories and actions made it to your list?

How I wish this conversation were taking place in person.
Since it is not, I will share a few elements I discovered about my list, some of which surprised me.

The first category on my list was money. Scripture does not shy away from addressing money and its impact on our hearts, minds, and walks with the Lord. Tithing, the practice of returning the first 10% of our income to the Lord, is a key component for keeping our hearts focused on the Lord and what He is doing. The Lord knew how significantly money could ensnare our hearts and even encourages us to test Him to show His faithfulness when we tithe. (Malachi 3:10-12)

Financial generosity, however, is not formulaic and moves beyond tithing. Rather than being defined by a certain number, recipient, or cause, financial generosity is characterized by our willingness to give joyfully as the Lord leads. (2 Corinthians 9:7)

In fact, a key component to any and all generosity is obedience to the Lord.

“Because of the proof provided by this ministry, [fellow believers] will glorify God for your obedient confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone.” (2 Corinithians 9:13)

Our goal is to become more Christlike. (2 Corinthians 3:18) True generosity, the kind that makes us more like Him and demonstrates our spiritual growth, is an outpouring of hearing and obeying. It’s a heart-level response.

Is the Lord asking you to give to a missionary? Is He asking you to help support a single parent? Is He the author of the totally random and unexpected “passing thought” to bring your co-worker a coffee one morning?

The Lord knows each one of us so very intimately and, simultaneously, sees the big picture in all things. Therefore, He knows what each of us needs and how our paths cross. Maybe that random cup of coffee is the warm hug from the Lord your co-worker needs; we may never know how we might be an answer to prayer.

Generosity, then, is about giving open-handedly, no strings attached, zero expectation for accolades; instead, we expect God’s promises outlined in His Word to be fulfilled; His grace will overflow to us, equipping us to do the good work to which He’s called us. (2 Corinthians 9:8)
He will give us what we need that we might live with righteous generosity, bringing glory and thanksgiving to the Lord. (2 Corinthians 9:10-13)
He will build “deep affection” among believers, as those blessed by generosity lift up the givers in prayer. (2 Corinthians 9:14)

And finally, as I made my list, I found that while a few situations were financial, many were not, reminding me generosity includes, but also extends beyond, our finances.

One person is in a challenging season and needs solid, consistent prayer covering. While money may help at some point, the Lord highlighted her name when brainstorming how I could be generous with my time and intercession.

Another idea is to send a handwritten note to a friend who unexpectedly lost her husband this summer. This idea prompts me to be generous with my talents and my time. How could your talents be used generously for the glory of the Lord?

Regardless of what made your list, as we grow and practice our generosity, may we keep our eyes focused on the Lord. He is the pioneer and perfecter of our faith and it is through Him we become more like Him in every spiritual discipline.

My sister, thank you for growing in the Lord by leaning into training more intensely in these spiritual disciplines. May the Lord define and strengthen your “spiritual muscles” and bless your training!

In God’s economy, the more we give, the more we gain.

Scotty Smith wrote these words as part of a prayer to the Lord, “The primary reward we get for being generous is You being revealed, honored, and glorified.”

Let’s enjoy, to the full the benefit, God being revealed and glorified through our sacrificial, generous, cheerful giving.

Pray His Words Back To Him!

2 Timothy 3:16-17

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. You know those who taught you, and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Prayer Journal Entry

Lord, forgive me, create in me a clean heart. (Psalm 51:10) I have become distracted with all the busy of life and closed off my time from You. You desire a deep relationship with me, but I’ve neglected time spent with You by reading and studying Your Word. I confess the times I have only studied your Word when I’ve prepared to teach or write instead of as my guide in all of life.

I have neglected to come before You with nothing on my agenda except to listen to You. I know You hold the richest of all joys, stir up in me the desire to be fully present with You in worship and prayer. I know from experience there is nothing as sweetly tender and full of awe as basking in Your presence as Joshua did in the Tent of Meeting. (Exodus 33:11)

Teach me to silence my “runaway train” thoughts, my worries, constant to-do list, so I will clearly hear Your still small voice. (1 Kings 19:11-12)

Worship Through Song

Journal Prompts

JOURNAL ONE

I find that being still is difficult. To me, stillness has the appearance of lazy idleness. When I want to be lazy, it’s easy to be still. When I purposely set aside time to be still and seek the Lord in the quiet, my mind naturally races. The enemy of our souls leverages our easily-distracted-from-God sin nature to draw us away from sitting silently in God’s presence.

As Kaitlyn reminded us, being still doesn’t mean emptying our minds. Rather, biblical meditation involves resting in God’s presence.

I have a few friends who enjoy walking prayer labyrinths. It keeps them moving forward without the distraction of navigating where they are going. A prayer labyrinth provides a simple path without obstacle for feet, so one’s mind and heart can focus more deeply on prayer and Scripture meditation. Practicing stillness in prayer is important because we become so busy talking to and lamenting to God with our litany of requests we fail to shut off the noise and listen instead.

How will you practice biblical meditation this weekend? Try finding a local trail to meander and pray. If weather keeps you inside, light a candle and find a dark place where you can sit and focus on the light while repeating truths about God.
JOURNAL TWO

Our sin-nature, if not consistently surrendered before the Lord Jesus, will rule over us. (Romans 6:12-14) As people who have been forgiven and turned away from our sin, we are called to offer the whole of our lives to God through the power of His Spirit in us.

Often overlooked, but absolutely non-negotiable for a life that brings glory to God, is our willingness to live within biblical community. We were handcrafted by the Triune God to live together in humble unity with other brothers and sisters who have also been forgiven and have the Spirit living within them.

Do you belong to a local church? Are you committed to seeing her flourish in your city and reach others with the hope and freedom offered in Jesus? Do you serve alongside other Christians in your church? Reflect on your prayer life and evaluate how frequently you commit dedicated time to interceding for other believers.

Take time this weekend to connect with a believing friend and plan time to share coffee or a meal together, then spend the time sharing how God is teaching you and shaping your heart. This rich encouragement of sharing authentic life together is how we build community within Christ’s Body, His Church.
JOURNAL THREE

I found Sarah’s Journey Study to be quite convicting as the Holy Spirit shone His truth on my heart from Scripture! Consistent Bible-reading and study can seem daunting, but we must remember that the enemy would like nothing better than to derail us in our relationship with Christ by shifting our focus from His Truth.

Scripture study is absolutely essential for our spiritual wellbeing. Proverbs 4:20-22 instructs us to heed God’s Word with focused intentionality and purpose. Paul exhorts us to train our minds to meditate on whatsoever is true, honorable, just, and the like! (Philippians 4:8-9)

Take up Paul’s challenge this weekend and use his list of wholly good things as the focus point for your thought life. This requires disciplined training! Look up those two verses in Philippians and ponder their meaning for your everyday life. Sometimes, I find myself quick to keep Scripture foremost in my mind, while in other seasons, my lack of disciplined training exposes my eager distraction to focus on what isn’t good, pure or truthful. These seasons consistently produce worry and anxiety.

How I respond to life circumstances is directly related to my willingness to practice the discipline of feasting on Scripture!

Worship IX Day 11 Spirit & Truth

Worship IX Day 11 Spirit & Truth

Read His Words Before Ours!

John 4:19-26
1 Samuel 15:20-25
Isaiah 1:11-21

Worship is a lifestyle.
It is not just a Sunday act, but an everyday practice.
It is not just the status of being in awe for a few moments, but a lifetime habit.

The Bible teaches us to worship God in Spirit and Truth. (John 4:23)
What does it mean to obey this instruction? Let’s study God’s Word together and find out!

First, we can never truly worship a God we do not know.

I love Moses’ first encounter with God in the wilderness. He asked God about Who He is, before following Him and serving as God’s voice and hands in the rescue of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. (Exodus 3:13-18) Moses’ act was reasonable, born of a sincere desire to know the One he would be obeying and surrendering his life for. God answered Moses’ question by explaining, “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14), referring to His unchanging character. Moses could follow the great I Am with confidence because He had revealed Himself to Moses.

Similarly, as present-day worshippers, it is important for us to know the God we worship. The more deeply we know Him, the more “we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe,” (Hebrews 12:28); our everyday lives become offerings of worship that will be pleasing in His sight. Let’s pursue His heart in prayer, learn of His character through studying His Word, and respond by worshipping in spirit and in truth.

. . . in spirit and in truth. What does this phrase mean in real life?

  1. Worship God in spirit
We can begin by acknowledging that along with our physical bodies, we have been created with spirits longing to connect with God. (Genesis 1:26-27, John 4:24)

More than our physical gestures, God longs for us to worship Him in spirit, because it involves the very core of our identities. Worship from our spirit flows from the bottom of our hearts, sincerely adoring the goodness of God and acknowledging He is enough. Worship in spirit doesn’t follow a prescribed order of service for a few minutes Sunday morning, or move through the motions of all the “religious things”. Rather, true worship offers our spirits to enter into deep communion with Him, transforming every little act of our lives into lavish acts of worship. Even mundane tasks like eating and drinking are now beautiful worship; this is worshipping in spirit every day!

This worship in spirit is a natural response to His Holy Spirit who lives within every believer as described by Jesus in John 15:26. Through the Holy Spirit, we are better able to know and experience the God we worship.

  1. Worship God in truth.
As we’ve discussed, it is important to know the God we are worshipping: the one true, authentic God. Our worship will not be sincere if we merely pay lip service to an unknown deity. Remember, we are not pretending when we worship; instead, worshipping in truth means being confident God is THE truth, and His Word is true.

When our worship overflows from revelation of the Lord we receive through His Word, our worship is not only sincere adoration, but also rooted in truth. Based on Scripture, we learn that a lifestyle of worship is found in following Jesus’ example and instruction to live in wholehearted pursuit of God and of the lost. (1 John 2:3-6)

When Jesus came to earth, He removed the condemnation of the law over our
lives. We are no longer slaves to sin and we are freed by His blood which offers us forgiveness! (Romans 6:6-11) Jesus has torn the veil between God and us so we can freely worship God, not just through traditions, but in spirit and truth, just as it says in John 4:23,
“But an hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth. Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him.“

So sisters, let us come to know the fullness of God by reading His Word and being taught by His Spirit. May we lead lives of worship with full confidence He will accept us, and our offerings of worship, because Jesus has made a way to bridge the gap between us and God!

It’s easy to weave a tangled web with daily chores and “to do” lists which pull us away from offering heart worship. If we aren’t intentional, we can end up only offering lip service in prayer and neglecting true worship.

Pray His Words Back To Him!

Ephesians 2:1-6

And you were dead in your trespasses and sins 2 in which you previously lived according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit now working in the disobedient. 3 We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath as the others were also.

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us, 5 made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace! 6 He also raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus.

Prayer Journal Entry

Father, Your gospel is so beautiful yet bold, intricate yet simple. Awaken the eyes of my heart to behold the preciousness of Your gospel story in my everyday life this week. Show me how much I need You. Remind me how desperate I am for Your solid truth.

Surround me with friendships who speak truth over me, while placing people continually and intentionally in my path who need Your truth and grace. Show me how to love people better because of the beautiful truth of Your gospel, Jesus!

Teach me, Spirit, to have a ready defense, to know Scripture, and be prepared to point people to You. I praise You that sharing about Your redemption is never about my intelligence or my ability to have the right words, it’s simply about allowing You to speak through me. Oh, Lord, Speak!

Worship Through Song

Journal Prompts

JOURNAL ONE

Perhaps you’ve struggled, as I have, in knowing how to respond well to someone who clearly doesn’t hold to the biblical gospel. Fear of offending or of not knowing the right answers can hold us back from saying anything at all.

Practice thinking of how to respond next time you find yourself in a spiritual conversation. Ask questions to encourage them to share more about their faith, praying for the right question to ask at the right time.

To help you prepare and practice, write down your biggest fears or the questions you dread hearing. Take this list to Jesus, pray over it, and then do some honest digging to find good answers.

JOURNAL TWO

When have you encountered someone who believes if they are “good enough” they will earn going to Heaven? What about their argument sounds convincing to you?

Something I’ve learned to ask is, “How do you know when you’re ‘good’ is actually ‘enough’? What if you die unexpectedly before you’ve actually done ‘enough’?”

These questions aren’t attacking, but conversational. Listen well in spiritual conversations and pray often that the Spirit would lead you as you share truth!

JOURNAL THREE

Regardless of the religious belief system, people long for community and true, genuine relationships the most. Set aside this week to intentionally pray that the Lord would give you opportunities to boldly share truth in love and grace.

Look for those who are different from you and reach out, make a connection, pray for them consistently, and watch what the Lord will do through your obedience to love!

Prayer Day 5 Kingdom Coming; Kingdom Now

July 13, 2018 by Audra Darville Leave a Comment

Read His Words Before Ours!

Matthew 6:5-15
Philippians 3:12-20
Luke 22:39-46

Prayer, Day 5

When I was in high school, I ran track with my main event being high jump.
Like any athlete, I practiced hours every day.
My coach made me go to the high jump mat and practice marking out and measuring my steps and stance for every attempted jump.

I would get frustrated that, for the entire 3-hour practice,
he made me repeat the steps over and over and over again.
It wasn’t until my first meet I understood why.

At the meet, I was nervous. It was a mat I was unfamiliar with and there were a lot of eyes watching me. He came over and said, “Do exactly what you practiced.” So, I began to mark out and measure my steps, do my stance, and completed a perfect jump.
That day I won 3rd place in my first track meet ever,
achieved a personal best,
and learned the importance of practice.

When I look at the preparation we, as believers, must do for Christ’s Return,
I compare it to prepping for high jump.

High jumpers must practice now, for the meet to come.
In practice, you must do the exact same thing you would do in the meet.
In similar fashion, Jesus calls believers to pray,
“Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

We must live kingdom come; right now.
“Your Kingdom Come.”
In Matthew 3, John the Baptist was teaching the crowds, preparing them for the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. John called out, “Repent! For the Kingdom of God is at hand!” (Matthew 3:2) Jesus embodied the fullness of the Kingdom of God and He had come into the world to begin setting up His Kingdom “on earth as it is in Heaven”, and He was going to use His people to build it. He was the model, and His followers were to imitate Him.

In Philippians 3:12-20, Paul teaches believers to strain toward the goal of righteousness, which becomes ours the more we allow Jesus to transform us through His Spirit to be more like Himself. Paul encourages Christ-followers to remember that our real citizenship is in heaven, so we should long all the more to become like Christ now, regardless of the circumstances surrounding us. We don’t need to be so caught up in earthly things that we forget that the Kingdom of God is both coming and being built.
Rather, we should eagerly be awaiting for its fullness, preparing for its full fruition,
and praying for it to be unleashed today!

Jesus boldly teaches us to pray that His Kingdom come…now, on earth, just like it currently operates in Heaven!

I have prayed this prayer countless times in my own life, and when I do,
God opens my spiritual eyes.
He gives me a sensitively to the spiritual realm.
My eyes see people around me who are broken and need a kind word.
I see the way my attitude and speech needs to change to glorify Him.
I see opportunities to love others.
I see how I can participate in bringing His Kingdom now, into my everyday life!

My mind is not caught up in the classes I need to attend,
the bills I need to pay,
or the diapers I need to change.
My heart is fixed on my eternal citizenship.

Instead of going about my day with a checklist that never seems completed,
I go through my day with countless divine appointments,
handfuls of Scriptural application,
and peaceful joy in my heart.
This is God’s Kingdom on earth!

“Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
Look at another model of Christ’s prayer life displayed on the Mount of Olives. Jesus was about to be arrested and crucified to “bear the sins of the world”. (1 John 2:2)
He prayed, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but Yours, be done.” (Luke 22:42)

Obeying God’s will is not an easy pill to swallow,
but once you practice swallowing it, it gets easier.
Why does it get easier?

Because He is making us new!
The Holy Spirit begins transforming our will into His will the more we surrender to His hands. We begin learning to put away things of fleshly sin-nature, and start seeking out the things of God’s righteous nature.
When our spiritual eyes are open, we behave, speak, and walk differently, more like Christ.
More like citizens of Heaven!
In the process, God’s Kingdom is built on earth as it is in Heaven!

When I was a child there we would sing a song at school that goes like this:
“It only takes a spark
To get a fire going
And soon all those around
Can warm up in its glowing
That’s how it is with God’s love
Once you’ve experienced it
You spread His love to ev’ryone.”

There is joy through the trails, steadfast morals, a repentant heart, kind speech, and graciously attitude that happen when we, as God’s children, begin to take on His will. Others crave it and pursue it, and the spark turns into two,
then two sparks turn into an all-consuming fire.

When we allow the Will of God to be done in our lives,
we spread His love with others;
we build His kingdom here.

Ladies, let’s choose to live with heavenly eyes wide open!

Prayer Day 4 What’s In A Name: Digging Deeper

Digging Deeper Days

Finding the original intent of Scripture and making good application to our everyday lives as we become equipped to correctly handle the Word of Truth!

Yesterday’s Journey Study connects with today’s!
Check out What’s In A Name!

The Questions

1) What is important about calling God “Our Father”?

2) What does it look like for us to “honor” God’s name?

3) What does it mean for God’s name to remain “holy”?

Matthew 6:5-9

5 “Whenever you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 When you pray, don’t babble like the Gentiles, since they imagine they’ll be heard for their many words. 8 Don’t be like them, because your Father knows the things you need before you ask him.

9 “Therefore, you should pray like this:
Our Father in heaven,
your name be honored as holy…”

Original Intent

1) What is important about calling God “Our Father”?
When Jesus decided to teach about prayer to the people who were listening to Him on the mountainside (Matthew 5:1), His first lesson was on structuring their prayers (beginning in verse 9).  Jesus first focused on how to address the most holy God:  as FATHER.  Jesus’ simple, uncomplicated model for prayer begins with acknowledging to whom we pray.  Of all the names and titles given to God throughout the ages that Jesus could have emphasized, He focused on the one that reiterated the relationship God has with His people.  He reminded those listening that God is their perfect Father.  In fact, in verses 5-8, Jesus refers to praying to the “Father” 3 times.  While it is not wrong to pray to Jesus and the Holy Spirit, for they are the other 2 persons of the One Triune God, Jesus establishes and models for us the normative practice of praying to God, the Father.  Jesus’ instruction was to come before God with that kind of intimacy and knowledge – like a child approaching his or her father to have a personal conversation.

2) What does it look like for us to “honor” God’s name?
Jesus’ instruction continues to highlight the father-child relationship as He further instructs that God’s name is to be honored.  There is a correlation here to the Ten Commandments in which God’s people receive the instruction to “honor your father and mother” (Exodus 20:12); Jesus reiterates a concept that would have been familiar to those listening.  Not only are we to honor God because of His relationship to us as Father, but also in how we pray – not to be seen by others (verse 5) or in the number of words we use (verse 7).  These two instructions from Jesus emphasized to His disciples that their prayers were to be focused on God, rather than their own actions.

3) What does it mean for God’s name to remain “holy”?
Jesus understood that there were many names that were treated as important by the people He was teaching – leaders, priests, idols, and so many more.  As a result, He instructs the people listening to treat one name alone as holy, their Father in heaven.  In a world full of options and idols, Jesus distinguishes the name of God as the only one deserving special significance.

Everyday Application

1) What is important about calling God “Our Father”?
As mentioned before, Jesus’ instruction to address God as “Father” when we pray echoes Exodus 20:12 from the Ten Commandments where we are called to honor our earthly fathers and mothers.  His instruction is a confirmation of the  relationship we have with Him.  We must be sure that we do not allow that relationship to be defined or distorted in any way by our earthly fathers;  no matter how good or bad our experiences may be, GOD IS MORE.  Do you ever struggle to relate to God as your Father?  If so, why would  you say that is a challenge for you?  What truth do you need to remember to help you better relate to God as your Father?  If you are comfortable relating to God as your father, how does that impact your relationship with Him?

2) What does it look like for us to “honor” God’s name?
No matter what activity we undertake, we are called to represent God well.  This includes when we pray, whether in private or public.  When you pray in private, do you give God the honor He deserves?  How do you do that?  Or are you ever guilty of treating Him like a magic bullet just when you need help?  Or of approaching Him flippantly?  Or with a demanding attitude?  What about when you pray publicly?  Are your thoughts ever dominated by what others may think of your words?  In those moments, are you more concerned about your own reputation more than you are with voicing a prayer that honors His name?  Do you ever find yourself concerned with getting the approval of others when you pray in a corporate setting – wanting to be seen as “wise” or “spiritual” by those listening?   Consider your motives carefully and whether or not you are honoring Him in all your prayers. When you pray, take time to offer praise to God before petitioning Him for your own needs, creating space to remind you to Whom you pray.

3) What does it mean for God’s name to remain “holy”?
“Holy, holy, holy…” (Isaiah 6:3 and Revelation 4:8) is a phrase reserved for God alone.  There are other references, of course, that refer to people and actions as holy.  But the use of the three repetitions together is solely referencing the Almighty God showing that He is the only One worthy of that kind of praise. He is wholly different and set apart (which is the meaning of “holy”) from any other being in the universe.  In order to keep God in His rightful place in our hearts, attitudes, minds, and actions, we must be sure that we don’t allow anything to have priority over Him.  Our idols may not look the same, but we all struggle with them in one way or another.  Where do you find yourself challenged to keep God in His rightful place in your life?  What pulls for your attention above Him?

Why Dig Deeper?

Finding the original meaning is a huge deal when we study Scripture and can make all the difference in our understanding as we apply God’s truths to our everyday lives.

In our modern-day relationships, we want people to understand our original intention as we communicate; how much more so between God and humanity?!

Here’s a little bit more on why we take Digging Deeper so seriously.
