Flourishing Day 9
His Flourishing: Digging Deeper

May 18, 2017 by Rebecca Adams Leave a Comment

Digging Deeper Days...are a pretty big deal at GT!

We search God's Word together, ask questions as we read, dig around to find the original intentions at the time of writing, and then make some applications to our everyday lives.
Along the way, we hope you'll pick up some new tools to study Scripture and you'll see truth in a new and accessible way!
Dig In!

The Passage

Looking for yesterday’s
Journey Study?
Check out His Flourishing!

1 Timothy 6:17-21 English Standard Version (ESV)

17 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of  that which is truly life.

20 O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” 21 for by professing it some have swerved from the faith.
Grace be with you.

The Questions

1) Why is there a comparison between wealth and God?

2) If someone is generous in their giving, will this earn them eternal life?

3) What is the “irreverent babble” Paul is referring to?

4) What does it mean to “swerve from the faith”?

The Findings for Intention

1) Why is there a comparison between wealth and God?
As in Mark 10:17-31 and numerous other places in both Old and New Testaments, Paul is noting the human tendency to become dependent on something that cannot be trusted to sustain us, money. Wealth can be wiped away much easier than we’d like to think, and whether we have plenty or are pinching pennies, it’s much easier to set our focus on those numbers in our bank account than it is to gaze into the glories of God.

2) If someone is generous and philanthropic in their giving, will this earn them eternal life?
This passage takes careful reading, so be sure to slow down and pay attention to the sentence structure as well as the greater context of the chapter. Paul’s entire letter is written to Timothy as he pastors on the island of Crete. His instructions are for Timothy and the believers in his church, so it is a given that those who “are rich in this present age” were already Christ-followers. These verses are a warning for Timothy to pass on to the materially wealthy of Timothy’s church, not in how they could earn favor with God or salvation, but in how they could live a fuller, more abundant life both now and in the eternal life to come. See also Matthew 6:19-20 for more teaching on laying up treasure in Heaven for the believer.

3) What is the “irreverent babble” Paul is referring to?
In Paul’s day, religious ideas like Mysticism (experiencing God/knowing truth is discovered inside yourself) and Gnosticism (salvation could only be gained through a secret knowledge) were springing up everywhere and false teaching was constantly threatening to infiltrate truth. Paul refers to all of these teachings as “irreverent babble” here and uses similar language in his other letters.

4) What does it mean to “swerve from the faith”?
The idea of “swerving” here is tightly associated with distraction. Paul references this same idea in chapter 1, where he notes that small, seemingly important things, end up undermining a life that could have otherwise done much for the kingdom. This “swerving from the faith” isn’t a warning that you might “lose” your salvation, but rather that there is danger in becoming ineffective in your faith as a believer. Again, Paul’s letters to Timothy are overflowing with sage warnings. Often, Satan ambushes us not with temptation to fall into “big” sins, but by simple distraction, slowly leading us away from intimacy with God and effectiveness in His kingdom. 2 Timothy 2:16-17

The Everyday Application

1) Why is there a comparison between wealth and God?
Humanly, we see finances as being real and “needed” for daily life, and the Lord as “supplemental”, if even that. Don’t believe me? Take a look at your day. How often have you considered buying something today or had a bill go through electronically or ran to Target for one more thing? Compare it to how often you cried out to Jesus, opened your Bible, repeated a verse to memorize it, or prayed for God to show you more of His glory? In the end, “riches” aren’t just limited to our finances, but anything we set our eyes on that deceives us into thinking that it holds “real life”. There’s only ONE that holds out deep, true, abundant living and it’s the Lord Jesus Christ. Where is your heart focus? Are you ready to truly flourish? Sink your feet into the rich grace of God and find the life you’ve been aching to discover!

2) If someone is generous and philanthropic in their giving, will this earn them eternal life?
Before you mentally “check out” and think these verses don’t apply to you because you aren’t “wealthy”, consider Randy Alcorn’s statement, “if you have any money saved, a hobby that requires some equipment or supplies, a variety of clothes in your closet, two cars (in any condition), and live in your own home, you are in the top 5% of the world’s wealthy.” You, my friend, are exactly who this verse applies to. For more mind-blowing statistics, check here. While being generous with time, giftings, and finances will not earn us eternal life, it will most definitely “lay a good foundation for the future (i.e. eternity). How all of that works out in the life to come or what it looks like, we can only theorize, but we do know for sure that what we do now, today, has an eternal affect!

3) What is the “irreverent babble” Paul is referring to?
Truth is under fire just as much today, if not more so, than it was in Timothy’s, so this letter we are reading through in the 21st century is incredibly relevant. We would be wise to heed its warnings! As you study God’s Word, listen to sermons, attend church programs, read blogs, and shape your beliefs about God and eternity, are you continually testing the basis of those beliefs? Deception slips in quietly, in countless forms. The Enemy is always prowling, ready to deceive us, leading us away from the Beloved Savior. Be on guard!

4) What does it mean to “swerve from the faith”?
Distractions are small and seemingly insignificant at the time, but lead to an entire life being thrown off course if they aren’t caught. A simple example is me sitting down with the intention of spending quiet time with God. Bible open, I think of a question, write it down, and the dog needs out, then I realize I forgot to respond to that email, then one of my kids is needing a band-aid, then I’m thinking about dinner and whether or not I need to go to the store…Oh, what was I reading? Distraction leaves me with a busy day, full of opportunities to either lean into Jesus or trust my own abilities, but now I haven’t aligned my heart with the Father’s before I even begin. That shirt is sure cute with those swirls and floral print. “Do what makes you happy” its script entices me, but is it true? If I follow that mantra, will I find “real life” that Paul is talking about here in Timothy? Simple distraction. Join me by examining your life and teaching, “Keep a close watch on yourself and the teaching. Persist in this!” (1 Timothy 4:16a)

1) Take this passage (or any other passage).
2) Read through it (always more than a verse or two).
3) Write down your questions as you think of them.
4) Ask specific culture related questions and be ready to dig around for your answers. Google them, use www.studylight.org, or look them up in a study Bible and read the footnotes (click on the little letters next to a word and it will show you other related verses!). (www.esvbible.org)

The Community!

Thanks for joining us today as we journeyed into
Flourishing Week Two!
Don’t miss out on the discussion – we’d love to hear your thoughts!

The Tools!

We love getting help while we study and www.studylight.org is one of many excellent resources.  Just type in the verse you’re looking at and Boom! It’s right in front of you in English and Hebrew (Old Testament) or Greek (New Testament), which are the original languages the Bible was written in.

Want to know more about a specific word in a verse? Click on “Strong’s Interlinear Bible” then click the word you’d like to study. Find super awesome stuff like “origin”, “definition”, and even all the different ways that single word has been translated into English! If you want to be geeky, you can even click the word and hear its original pronunciation – That Is Awesome!

Want to get more background on a word or phrasing or passage? Click “Study Tools”, then pick a few commentaries to read their scholarly approach, keeping in mind that just because a commentary says it, doesn’t mean it’s true. (just like the internet :-))

The Why!

Finding the original meaning is a huge deal when we study Scripture and can make all the difference in our understanding as we apply God’s truths to our everyday lives.

In our modern-day relationships, we want people to understand our original intention as we communicate; how much more so between God and humanity?!

Here’s a little bit more on why we take Digging Deeper so seriously.

Embracing God’s fullness in our lives is rooted in scripture and memorizing His word is vital to our continued growth and depth with Jesus.

Flourishing Day 8
His Flourishing

May 17, 2017 by Merry Ohler Leave a Comment

Read His Words Before Ours!

1 Timothy 6:2-21
Luke 14:25-33
Revelations 12:11
Luke 21:1-4

Did you know that the human brain is believed to generate around 50,000 thoughts every day? If the average person sleeps around 8 hours a night (and all-the-moms join me with a “Yeah, right!”), that boils down to approximately 3,125 thoughts per hour, 52 thoughts per minute and just shy of a thought every second. That’s all well and good, but as a wife, mama to three-under-four and business owner (among myriad other roles), I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t often feel like I have 3,125 thoughts racing through my head per minute. No matter what I’m focused on, it often feels like my persistent inner monologue of “to-do’s”, “did-I’s” and “we must’s” hums right along beneath the surface:

OUCH. Okay, we are going to learn to clean up our toys when we are finished playing with them if it is the LAST thing we learn! Come on, Mama, you can teach this. OH, I really need to return a few emails during naptime today…but I MUST catch up on this laundry! Uh-oh, do I even have enough laundry detergent? Let’s see…no. Okay, add it to the list. Also, dishwashing liquid. And eggs. Milk. Bread. Shoot, what am I going to make for dinner tonight? (I can’t believe I’m actually thinking about this before 5 PM. Gold star.) But I should have pulled meat to thaw yesterday! (No gold star.) Why on earth am I not using my crockpot today? I HAVE TO START MEAL PLANNING. Oh, that’s right. I’m out of liners. Add them to the list. Oh YUCK, what did I just step on? I don’t even want to look…What on earth is mashed into my rug? Ok, it smells like banana. I really hope it’s just banana. Dang…I need carpet cleaner…add it to the list. I just realized that two out of three children are still in pajamas at 11 AM. And one just clobbered the other one with a toy frying pan. Is that a mom-fail? Do I care? No. Yes. I don’t know. Oh, no. HOW ARE WE OUT OF COFFEE? Jesus, please send help. Help with coffee.

Regardless of our situation, children or no, I think we can all relate to that feeling sometimes. Overwhelmed. Busy. Trying to do all-the-things at exactly-the-right-time. Trying to flourish as a mom, wife, executive, teacher, sister, friend, fill-in-your-blank. What we fail to realize when we try to flourish is that we are measuring ourselves and our lives by the world’s definition of flourishing, rather than His. We forget that His definition of flourish does not match ours. His definition has nothing to do with the physical and everything to do with the spiritual. His flourishing involves righteousness, godliness, faith, love and steadfastness. It involves taking care to guard ourselves from the love of what this world holds dear. Our intentions may be the best, but when we find ourselves overrun by our own thoughts or goals, our focus slips from Him and all that He does and wants to do and settles on what we have or what we can do.

Oh, legalism. There you are again. Slipping into the dark crevices where we least expect (but maybe should most expect?) to find you.

When we find ourselves striving to make sure our spouses, children, friends, family, selves are happy, fed and thriving by doing-all-the-things and having-all-the-things and being-all-the-things, what room are we leaving for Holy Spirit to move, to lead? Where is the room for God to speak into us? And…would we hear Him over the din of our own noise?

As we go about our lives this week, let’s stop to take note when our inner monologues start to ramp up and take over to steal our focus from the One Who commands it. Rather than let them run full force, let’s make sure that we aren’t slipping into legalism and bring the underlying tensions or issues to the One Who brings order to all.

Father, we want YOU to be our sole focus. We want to meet your definition of flourishing. Cultivate awareness in us so that we quickly recognize when we venture into attitudes and thoughts that encourage legalism. We love you!

The GT Weekend – Worship Week 3

March 25, 2017 by Michelle Promise Leave a Comment

The GT Weekend

At Gracefully Truthful, weekends aren’t for “checking out”.
Use this time to invite the Almighty’s fullness into you life in a deeper way!
Saturdays and Sundays are a chance to reflect, rest, and re-center our lives onto Christ. Don’t miss the opportunity to connect with other women in prayer, rest your soul in reflective journaling, and spend time worshiping the Creator who longs for intimacy with each of us!

Journal With Us!

Journal Prompts

1) We would all agree that spending time in the Word is important, but it’s so easy for it be the first thing cut from our days. Commit this week to spend more time than you usually do reading the Word, connecting with your Creator, and standing on His firm foundation.

2) Where in your life are you holding on tight, thinking somehow, someway you’ll be able to create new life? Give yourself permission to let it go and leave it with the One who is Sovereign over all.

3) We are not promised a life that is easy. Many difficult situations will arise that make us question who God is. Being prepared is the best defense in remembering our faith is not based on emotion, but on who Father is, of His faithful, true character and actions. Take a few moments to write out several of God’s attributes and some Scriptures to bring comfort and clarity when you are walking through fiery times.

Pour Out Your Heart

Lord, You are the Great Creator, the Everlasting Father, the Mighty Warrior. I praise You for being in charge and in control despite the chaos I feel around me. I bless Your name for fighting on my behalf and protecting me. Your Word provides life when I’m dry and withering and yet I so often skip reading it to do “more important things” like laundry or clean my messy house. Draw me close to You that I would carve out time to invest in our relationship. Guide me, that I might leave my problems with You rather than carry them as a heavy pack. Spirit, remind me Who You are and how perfectly You prepare everything for me, even in the middle of the difficult and unbearable things. Lord, when I am afraid let me trust in You!

Read His Words Before Ours!

Isaiah 43:19
John 11:1-45
Colossians 3:23-24

“If only there were 30 hours in a day, I could get everything done.”
Sound familiar, Sister?

I’ve had this conversation countless times with other women, women in every stage of adult life. I remember so clearly when the lazy days of my childhood stretched out endlessly before me, ripe with infinite possibilities. But as I stepped toward adulthood, someone hit fast forward and my life became hurried and I became harried.

How many times have we run through our mental to-do lists for the 800th time and found ourselves on the brink of tears, swallowing desperately the panicked explosion, “I can’t do EVERYTHING!”? Or perhaps, “I can’t BE everything!”
Sweet friend, this is me.
More often and more painfully than I care to admit.
And some days, the entire episode ends in a heaping helping of condemnation and shame before I rush on. But other days, when awareness penetrates the emotion and I stop and listen, I hear Him reminding me,
“I haven’t asked you to do EVERYTHING. I haven’t asked you to BE everything.”
Even good things. Even for our families, and our jobs, and our communities.
Even for the church, and the kingdom.
He hasn’t asked me, and He hasn’t asked YOU, to do ALL of them.
To BE all of them.

But we know from His word that He does have callings He’s placed on our lives.
We also know that some of these can change, as old seasons draw to a close and new ones unfurl. So when we find ourselves drowning in a sea of overwhelmed and overcommitted, let’s try something simple yet revolutionary.
Let’s talk to Him about it.

What are You calling me to do . . . who are You calling me to be . . . in this season?
We may need to gracefully step back from former roles and tasks. Or we may need to tell others, “Not yet,” with faith that when the fullness of time arrives, He will fulfill those desires and dreams.
When we are able to identify and partner with His will for the now, we find strength and passion to carry out His work wholeheartedly.

We find time to be intentional,
to give and to be our best.
We find time to rest.
We find time.

But hang on . . . could He really be showing me how to effectively work for His kingdom by slowing down and perhaps saying “not anymore” or “not yet” to good, even ministry-based opportunities? As I wrestled with this question, He brought the story of Lazarus to my mind. Lazarus was Jesus’s dear friend, and when Lazarus fell ill, his family sent word to Jesus (who was ministering elsewhere), asking Jesus to come quickly and heal Lazarus.

A request for help from a close friend – surely this is a good thing to do!
An opportunity to demonstrate the power of God through healing – surely this is a perfect avenue for ministry!
But Jesus doesn’t come.
At least, not right away.
His pace has a different focus.

It’s two days before He journeys to Judea, and during the waiting, Lazarus dies.
So why wait?
He could have dropped everything and rushed to Lazarus. By all appearances, that was the right and good and holy thing to do. But I believe that He didn’t, for two reasons.
First, He knew there was work still to be done where He was. Departing immediately would have left the purposes of God for those people and in that place unfulfilled. However, when the fullness of time did arrive, He left. He closed the door on that season, because God had a new work for Him to do.
Second, He chose that which was most impactful in furthering the kingdom.
In John 11:4 and again in verse 42, He makes His intention clear: He is acting for the greatest glory of God, so that those around Him will believe.

Which is the more powerful testimony?
“Yeah, I heard Lazarus was a bit under the weather. But he’s doing better now, right?”
Or
“Lazarus was dead. I watched Jesus pray. And now Lazarus is alive.”

Jesus knew that hurrying to heal Lazarus from sickness would have been good. But He also knew that finishing His former work, then following God’s direction to move on to raise Lazarus from death was best.

So dear friend, rather than rushing to fight time, let’s choose to seek the Father’s guidance, step into His pace, and operate in the fullness of time. Let’s find the courage to say “not anymore” or “not yet,” leaving space for rest. Like Him, let’s choose to be intentional with our commitments, so we can give and be our best, letting Him choose what brings the greatest glory to God!

The GT Weekend – Space Week One

December 17, 2016 by Rebecca Adams Leave a Comment

The GT Weekend

At Gracefully Truthful, weekends aren’t for “checking out”.

Journal Prompts

1) What are your top five Space Takers? They occupy the majority of your everyday attention, time, frustrations, and focus. In what ways are you open to Jesus reigning and ruling those arenas. Are there things you need to clear away to make room for the Messiah?

2) Take a look at your day and identify some “spaces” that could be repurposed by finding a new rhythm. Where are you too hard on yourself or pushing others too much? Start your day with a prayer for new opportunities to extend love and then watch for them!

3) Making space to know God better will never happen on its own; the choice is always intentional. We will either choose to intentionally spend time with Him or intentionally use our time for something else. Begin to think creatively about how to create that space for investing in your relationship with Him. Is it opening your Bible app the first thing as you reach for your phone in the morning? Locking yourself in a quiet spot for 10 minutes while you get real with Jesus? Memorizing a new verse every few days? The goal is overall consistency, not a checkbox for our performance. He cares about our relationship not rules!

Father, I praise You for the gift of time each day and that Your mercies are fresh and new for me every morning. I praise You that I can never deplete You of Your grace and forgiveness, that I can never mess up so much that You will refuse to draw me back. Your invitation to live and learn with You as my God is so rich! I praise You for the freedom found in You! Teach me to shift my focus towards Your heart as I look for those around me to whom I can reflect Your character. May You be glorified in my heart and actions today as I choose to set You above all else. I love You, Abba!

Space Day 3
Space For Love

December 14, 2016 by Kendra Kuntz 1 Comment

Read His Words Before Ours!

Luke 10:25-37
Luke 10:38-42
Psalm 46:10-11
Mark 6:30-32

“Being a mama is your most important job right now. It is your great calling and it is a wonderful calling with amazing rewards. It is alright to let other things go and focus on your little girls, it really is.”

With everything in me, I wanted to protest that I knew that and I was able to do that while serving at the same time. But I couldn’t even protest, because I knew it was true. I am walking in a season of saying “no” and of letting go. This is a hard season.

I’ve let go of potential job opportunities, I’ve said no to other opportunities. I’ve let go of ministries I’ve served in, and said no to serving in other capacities. For a woman who loves to say “yes” and loves to go, go, go, this season is a hard one.

So, when an older, wiser mama spoke those words to me, I allowed them to wash over me and settle on my soul, and I cleared another day on my schedule.

As I reread the parable of the Good Samaritan for what felt like the umpteenth time, I was stricken with a resemblance between my life and the lives of two of the characters… and not the ones I would want to resemble either.

Have I been like the Priest and the Levite who were so busy traveling that they couldn’t even stop to help the beaten, dying man on the side of the road? They saw that he was physically broken, and yet they completely avoided him because they were too busy.
They missed out.
And so did the man.

My entire life has been filled with event after appointment after assignment.
I can’t help but wonder how many opportunities I’ve missed because of that full calendar.
Was I too busy rushing from place to place that I missed a chance to love someone?

In that same story, we read of one man, who may have been in a hurry himself, but wasn’t too busy to actually stop. This man, a Samaritan, an outcast from the elite “chosen people of God”, stopped in the middle of his travels, completely halted his plans, and loved a total stranger.

Right after that parable, we read about Martha and Mary, two women who loved the Lord but showed their love in different ways. Martha welcomed Jesus into her home, scampering to and fro, preparing food for Jesus, making sure His water cup was full, attending to all of His needs and serving Him. Her sister, Mary, however, sat near to Jesus, listening intently to everything He had to say. She was so enthralled with Him, that she wouldn’t miss a moment.

Unsurprisingly, Martha got rather annoyed with her sister, who wasn’t helping at all. It was almost as if Mary just expected Martha to serve her! Martha was working hard for Jesus! She was busy and tired from that busyness. So she asked Him if He cared that Mary left her to serve alone. I imagine Jesus answering her in the way men often answer women- we ask a man to fix our problem and he looks at us with amusement and gives us the obvious solution to our problem. Jesus’ answer seems so obvious we almost can’t accept it. Jesus looked at Martha, His eyes slightly bewildered, but full of compassion because He knew her so well. Then He said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary…” going on to tell her it was more important for Mary to sit and spend time with Him, learning and listening, than it was for Martha to serve Him.

Let’s stop there for just a moment.

Jesus said it was more important for Mary to spend time with Him than it was for Martha to serve Him.

Sucker punch.

So many times I allow myself to believe that I need a schedule jam-packed and full of serving in order to prove my love for the Lord.
That isn’t what He asks.
He asks for a schedule with space enough to love.
Space enough to not miss out.
Space enough for sitting with Him.
