Word Day 5 Of Water & Spirit

Read His Words Before Ours!

John 3:1-21
Ephesians 1:3-14
Revelation 2:12-17

If my husband or I call our daughter anything other than her name, she is always quick to correct us. Like many families, nicknames are an affectionate habit, so we often use something like “sweat pea” or “snuggle bunny” instead of her given name. If she’s pretending to be a dog, frog, or other animal, we’ll say, “Oh my goodness, Elise turned into a.…insert animal name. “No, it’s me, Elise!”, she exclaims without missing a beat.

Over time, our four-year-old realized she has an identity.
One way she lays claim to her is her name.
It belongs to her, and no one can pin a name on her that doesn’t belong. Before she entered the world, her Dad and I chose a specific set of sounds, syllables, and letters to refer to her, and this combination was chosen with plenty of thought and intention.

When we come to know Christ, God gives us a new name.
Revelation 2:17 tells us our new identifier is written on a tablet, to be revealed later to us. Scripture is filled with other names we can now take ownership of as well, such as daughter (Mark 5:34), conqueror (Romans 8:37), and co-heir (Romans 8:17).

Despite these God-given titles, and like the man, Nicodemus, who came with plenty of questions to Jesus, we wonder what it truly means to be a Christian.
Can we know, without a doubt, if we are in Christ and part of His family?

For much of my life, I defined belonging to Christ
as following a rigid set of rules.

Maybe this is true for you, too?

I spent my middle and high school years at a Christian school, and the rulebook was lengthy. After years of keeping in line with their strict code of conduct, I tired myself out.

The tireless grace of God was an aspect of His character I didn’t yet understand, and no one attempted to explain it to me. My senior year, I was caught breaking the rules several times, and nearly expelled. Because my grades were good, the staff agreed to let me graduate with the rest of my class, but I didn’t return to church for nearly a decade.

Even though I ran, God pursued me.
As He is for you!

I didn’t recognize His pursuit at the time, but the passing of years always brings perspective. It took a cross-country move and the birth of my first child for me to realize it wasn’t sacrifices and rule checklists that God wanted.

He wanted my heart.
And yours.

In his gospel, the eye-witness disciple, John, records Jesus’ interaction with a Pharisee who brought his confusion and questions with him. He wanted to know who Jesus really is, but he came to Jesus at night so no one would see him. Jesus saw Nicodemus’ greatest need, just as He does for each of us, and cut to the heart of the matter.

“Truly I tell you, unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” (John 3:5)

To be born of water is flesh birthing flesh, but to be birthed of the Spirit of the Living God is altogether other.

Like Nicodemus, I questioned Jesus.

I found answers to some of my questions, but not all of them.

My point of surrender came when my thirst for Christ became greater than my thirst for answers. It came, blessedly, when my desire to know Him and love Him became greater than my need to have everything explained to me.

Once I surrendered all I knew of myself
to all I knew of God,
I knew I was His.

I was born of His Spirit.

Like my daughter, I had an identity that was given to me, not because I earned it, but because of the unconditional love of a parent. I knew who I was because the desire to walk in step with his Spirit came without feelings of guilt or shame. I was no longer obedient out of a sense of obligation or fear of punishment. I followed Jesus because I wanted to; I wanted to be a living reflection of the radical change He made in my life.

A couple of years later, Mormon missionaries came to our door and asked if I died tomorrow, would I know where I was going. For the first time in my life, I answered confidently. I knew God’s Spirit was in me because He was changing me from the inside out. When others commented on the newness they saw, it solidified my assurance.

Jesus’ Spirit in us is our seal, guaranteeing our redemption and our eternal future with Him. Although we can grieve Him when we go our own way or give in to the selfish cravings of our flesh, He will never leave us.

“In Him you also were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed.” (Ephesians 1:13)

Do you know Him?
Do you share conversation with Him, listening for His gentle whispers to guide your days?

If you will surrender, He proves a constant Friend and steady Counselor.
If something is keeping you from Him today, confess it to Him.
Declare out loud that He is your Lord.

Do you believe this?

Because the answer to that question changes everything.

Digging Deeper

Even amid suffering, we preach the gospel to ourselves. We remind ourselves and others that God is good and faithful, always loving and forgiving, ready to free us from the chains of sin and shame we are trapped within. We know this because He tells us in His word and because He’s proven Himself time and time again.
(2 Corinthians 1:3-7)

Bride Day 6 Faithful Pursuit

April 23, 2018 by Sara Cissell 3 Comments

Read His Words Before Ours!

Zephaniah 3:12-20
Genesis 15:1-21
Matthew 4:18-22

Bride, Day 6

“I will betroth you to Me forever;
Yes, I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice,
In loving kindness and in compassion,
And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness.
Then you will know the Lord.” Hosea 2:19-20 NASB (emphasis mine)

Caught.
No other word could capture the way the concept
wrapped around my heart and pulled me close.

Caught.
Forward movement ceased.
Speed ground to a halt.

Caught.
A gentle hand-tug pulling me from a potential escape
and spinning me into a slow-dance embrace.

Okay, so that didn’t physically happen.
However, as I read these verses from Hosea,
all of which I had read before,
this may just as well have happened in real life.

I’ve cried my way through Francine River’s Redeeming Love (an allegory of Hosea),
and have read through Hosea in the Bible before, and while I know I have been impacted by the words in the past, reading them this time truly did cause me to pause and gaze at the Lord.

Then. That’s a sequence word.
Then. It speaks of an outcome from a previous action.
Then. It is an invitation to experience and respond to the pursuit of the Lord.

As I sat in the middle of a coffee shop, surrounded by college students studying, mothers enjoying an evening out with friends, and a lone gentleman enjoying his scone,
I thanked the Lord for His faithful pursuit.
He sought me in order for me to know Him.
I let Him draw me close and remind me of the ways
He has proven these words true with His people throughout Scripture.

Pursued.
We first meet Abraham in the genealogy verses of Genesis 11.
The first mention of Abram as more than the son of Terah so no small mention. It is the record of the Lord’s promise to Abram, one in which He promises to Abram that
“in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

Moving a few chapters later, the Lord puts Abram into a deep sleep when He seals the covenant promise to Abram and thereby takes the weight of that promise solely on Himself.
Throughout the pages of the Word, the Lord has proven His faithfulness to this promise of a countless legacy through faith. Abram’s son, Isaac, began the family lineage in which Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, was born. Jesus, in turn, became the sacrifice sealing, inviting, and enabling all who ask to experience the covenant promise, a reality through which countless families have been blessed.

Pursued.
“Come and follow me.”
Jesus’ invitation to twelve men.
No resumes involved.
No extensive interview process.
A simple invitation to come and follow Him.
It is seriously doubtful that the disciples woke up the morning they met Jesus with any sense of how their lives were about to be radically changed. Yet, Jesus intentionally pursued them, intent on faithfully fulfilling His purposes.

Throughout the New Testament, Jesus proved His righteousness, justice, loving kindness, compassion, and so much more to those twelve men.
His commitment never wavered, even when handing Judas the bread that confirmed he would be the one to betray Jesus or when Peter denied Him three times. Ample opportunities existed for Jesus to point out their lack in commitment.
However, His pursuit was not contingent on their response.

The verses from Hosea that started this journey study referenced the Lord’s love and pursuit of Israel. Go back and reread them aloud as if they were addressed to you. Read them slowly and confidently.

Pursued.
Do you feel it?
Tonight His pursuit caught me.
His Words reminded me it is not about how hard I work to be obedient.
It’s not how much I feel I have earned His approval.
It’s not about how much I weigh, what I wear, the job I have, my marital status, or any other circumstantial aspect of my life.
It’s about His love for me and His commitment to me.

I know Him because He first chose me.
He is my victorious warrior singing over me tonight (Zephaniah 3:17)

Tonight I felt Him tug me close and beckon me to dance.
(For the record, I did not actually dance in the middle of Starbucks, but I did feel my heart sing.)
Some days He tugs my hand and shame keeps me from raising my eyes to His.
Other times my hurried schedule and numerous commitments become my focus,
and not the feel of my hand in His.
Still other times I let go of His hand all together and forget He remains close by.
However, He is love infinite and His patience eternity driven.

Pursued.
Caught.
I hope you dance in His pursuit!

Battle Day 15 Faithful Rescuer

September 8, 2017 by Rebecca Adams Leave a Comment

Read His Words Before Ours!

Daniel 3:8-30
Matthew 14:22-33
Romans 8:31-39

It was a freakish storm seemingly coming out of nowhere. What was once a beautiful sunny day, suddenly grew pitch black with fast moving clouds that covered the area within just a few minutes. Pattering drops soon became sheets of cold rain accompanied by loud claps of thunder, whistling wind, and brilliant lightning bolts flashing through the now dark sky.

I was about 10 years old at a Christian summer camp.
A full week of games, sports, water activities, and awkward moments with people I barely knew. Unlike most people at camp, I didn’t have any friends with me. I was new in my faith, lacked self-confidence, and had a million misconceptions about the God of the Bible. I was wrapped up in performance-driven love, but that sudden summer storm has re-played itself in my mind’s eye countless times since, becoming a solid anchor that shaped my view of God.

I was on a trail hike with other campers when the storm hit, and, like every other pre-teen girl, I ran as fast as I could towards the cabins, screaming all the way.
But everyone passed me up and I was left running alone.
Everything was so dark.
The heavy, chilling rain bit into my skin and eyes as I ran.
I screamed for everyone to wait, but no one heard, or cared.
And then my foot found an enormous black hole, and my leg was swallowed with cold mud.
I was stuck and terrified with no one to hear or see me.
Lightening was everywhere and to my freaked-out-10-year-old-self, I was pretty sure I was going to die there in that mud hole. Alone and forgotten, despite my screams.
Dramatic, I know.
But real to me, nonetheless.
Suddenly, I saw a tall figure emerge from the wooded area far ahead of me. Tall and running towards me, a counselor grabbed me from the mud, hefted me to his shoulder, and carried me to the cabin.
In that one moment, the storm no longer mattered to me.
The torrents and flashes could continue their barrage all day, it didn’t matter.
I was safe.
I was valuable.
I was worth rescuing.

I have no other memory of that counselor, no idea what songs we sang that week, and I don’t remember one spiritual conversation, but the image of being rescued has bound me to my view of God ever since.

The prophet Jonah, just thrown overboard in a tumultuous sea and rescued by an unlikely, swimming hero, prays, “I called out to the Lord, out of my distress.”
Safe. Valuable. Worth rescuing.
God knew where Jonah would be drowning, knew where to send the hungry sea creature, and then directed that nautical giant to Ninevah’s shores where God wanted Jonah to go.

The disciple Peter, bravado turning to fear when the storms threatened to overtake him as he walked on the water towards the Savior,
“…and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.”
Safe. Valuable. Worth rescuing.
Jesus knew He held all authority over the wind and waves.
Jesus knew He alone could rescue Peter, not just from physically drowning, but from living a life without fear.

Three young men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego being thrown into a fiery furnace for their refusal to bow down and worship a golden statue. Their declaration?
“…our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.”
Safe. Valuable. Worth rescuing.

Thunderstorms are special for me.
I love their magnificent display of my Creator’s power, the scent of the raw earth, and the
reminder that my God is a rescuing God.
He is “for me and not against me.”

I don’t know what your battles look like.
I do know that I’ve had plenty of them, as I’m sure have you.
And with every passing storm, I’ve learned a bit more about the God who holds all authority over it.

God’s response to Jonah’s distress call?
“….and He answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and (He) heard my voice.”

How did Jesus respond to Peter’s faithless fear?
“Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him.”

God’s answer to the three men in the furnace?
“But I see four men unbound, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods.”

This battle of yours?
It has nothing on your Rescuer!
Trust the heart of the God who wrapped Himself in flesh to save you from the sinking mud hole of your sin that you might have life to the fullest.

The GT Weekend – Adoring Week 2

December 3, 2016 by Michelle Promise Leave a Comment

The GT Weekend

At Gracefully Truthful, weekends aren’t for “checking out”.
Use this time to invite the Almighty’s fullness into you life in a deeper way!
Saturdays and Sundays are a chance to reflect, rest, and re-center our lives onto Christ. Don’t miss the opportunity to connect with other women in prayer, rest your soul in reflective journaling, and spend time worshiping the Creator who longs for intimacy with each of us!

Journal With Us!

Journal Prompts

1) It’s easy to pursue Jesus’ face in the midst of difficultly as our “lifesaver” and ignore him when all is well. What has been helpful in keeping you accountable in seeking Father when things in your life are moving along nicely?

2) What’s your word; your one thing that comes to mind when you hear talk of deep seeded, I’ve-never-told-anyone fear? There is so much freedom in pinpointing it and sharing it. Take another moment to think again of what you fear. Find a close friend to share with or email us at prayer@gracefullytruthful.com to share with us.

3) Our Good Father is always with us and ready for us to commune with him. Write out a reminder for you and post on your mirror. Some examples are:
You pursue me passionately.
Father, You love me deeply.
Jesus, You provide perfectly.

Pour Out Your Heart

Jesus, I come to You in repentance. Forgive me for turning from You and not following hard after You when my life is easy. Draw me closer to You, keep revealing more of Your face as I look to You when my life is going well.

Father, as I lean into the things I fear, let me choose faith over fear. Remind me of how big You are in the midst of the chaos of life. Let me be reminded of how deeply You love me, how You long to go deeper with me, and how You are faithful to Your own character. Lead me closer to You, my Lord.
