Psalm 86:5-10
Matthew 27:45-28:10
Mark 10:17-31
Luke 8:26-39

On one trip to the mountainside in South Korea,
we met up with my husband’s extended family for lunch at their family restaurant.
We were welcomed by the sour-est faced elderly grandma sitting in the back corner,
sulking for no apparent reason.
As lunch was served, I discovered she was my auntie-in-law and we were sitting at the entrance to one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the country.
She was a firm follower of Buddhism and wore her sufferings plainly for all to see.
Her faith permeated every facet of her life, yet she looked so hopeless.

The daily goal of Buddhism is to find an end to suffering through a constant recycling of life by re-incarnation. That is, after death, a soul is “reincarnated” or “comes back to life” as a different life form.
Good works are cornerstone in having any hope of coming back as anything better. The ultimate goal, however, is enlightenment (also known as nirvana); an experience saved only for monks and nuns.
Publically demonstrating sufferings followed by an outward display of good actions becomes an easy way to convince yourself there’s a good chance of returning as a monk/nun in the next life.
There is no thought that any choice you make in this life has the power to improve, change or even alter your current life, only the one to come.
Many Buddhist friends believe the bad things that happen to them are the result of karma. They presume they must’ve done something bad in their previous life and, in hopes of improving their next life, must simply buckle down, grin, and bear it without grumbling.

My auntie passed away last year thinking she had done a sufficient job of enduring the difficulties of her life. She passionately believed that she would come back to life as something better than a female human.
The very sad reality is that she died without knowing the hope found in a relationship with Jesus.

Hope.
We all cling to something as truth, praying it will stand up under fire.

Matthew 27:45-28:10 vividly records the account of Jesus’ death and resurrection.
We see Jesus holding ultimate power over death with the ability to break the chains of sin and bondage.
This is an important truth of Christianity for your Buddhist friend!
There IS something we can do to change not only our current life,
but also our eternal one!

Accepting, believing and confessing Jesus as Lord brings instant hope into one’s life, forever changing the trajectory of our lives.

Most Buddhists do not recognize Jesus as God’s son, co-equal with God the Father in deity. Before they will understand the truth of God’s Word, we must PRAY.

Pray, pray, and then pray again.

Prayer is the most important work to be done in cross-cultural sharing of the Gospel.
We need to rely heavily on the Holy Spirit to lead us as we share truth.
We need Him to guide us to engage with those who are ready to listen, those who have an open heart, and who will respond in faith to the hope we share from Scripture.

Because Buddhist people do not believe there is a God, or that God has any power to influence their life, studying Scripture about the character of God is useful.
Psalm 86:5-10 highlights several aspects of God’s character. Dig into these truths and be prepared to share about the character of our great God!

Forgiving. Good. Abounding in love. Ready to answer. Almighty. Doer of mighty deeds. Father.

In the muck of life when all seems lost, these are truths we, as followers of Jesus, claim and cling to. Truth of God’s character build hope within our hearts, providing solid assurance and calming our fears in the middle of real suffering.

We have hope, Sisters!

Hope that our Buddhist friends have yet to experience.

When your friend watches you navigate the messiness of your life circumstances, seeing you cling to the truth of Jesus and Scripture, they will begin to wonder, “how is it possible to actually find joy in this difficulty” rather than just endure the situation.
Faithfulness to Scriptural truth and actually living it out daily, coupled with intentionally inviting your Buddhist friends into everyday life with you, will influence your friends in a mighty way for eternity!

Buddhist, Zen, or New Age people are our neighbors, our baristas, our librarians, sports’ coaches, teachers, and friends.
Find the ones in your community
!
Pray for them to be open to the solid hope the Gospel offers.
Tell them of the power, authority, and victorious freedom of the cross of Jesus.
Explain the character of God and allow them to see firsthand in your life who He is and how He can impact their daily life.
Hold tightly to the truth of Scripture while sharing His love letter with them, remembering He is a God of grace and truth and He expects us to share His forever hope with gracious love and respect!

In doing so, you can help others be
forever free from this heavy weight of hopelessness!

Digging Deeper

Jesus alone completed the work of a perfectly righteous life.  As humans, we are unable reach that level of perfection. Instead, all we need is to believe that Jesus was the perfect son of God.  And His perfection makes it possible that we don’t have to be.

Read His Words Before Ours!

John 1:1-18

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light. 9 The true light that gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was created through him, and yet the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name, 13 who were born, not of natural descent, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.

14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John testified concerning him and exclaimed, “This was the one of whom I said, ‘The one coming after me ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’”) 16 Indeed, we have all received grace upon grace from his fullness, 17 for the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is himself God and is at the Father’s side — he has revealed him.

The Original Intent

1) What does John mean about Jesus being the light in the midst of darkness?

John’s gospel about Jesus’ life and ministry is written toward a Greek-thinking culture, Hellenized Jews and Gentile Greeks, driven by intellect and reason.  John’s goal is to capture for them the true identity of Christ as the one and only Son of God.

He opens his gospel account with the tangible metaphor of Jesus being the light in the darkness.  He uses the image to contrast that Jesus is different and stands out from all other sources of light; to acknowledge the real battle between spiritual darkness and spiritual light; and to say that Jesus is the one and only true light, unlike any other man.

The Everyday Application

1) What does John mean about Jesus being the light in the midst of darkness?

Jesus is different than any other man.  First, we must be clear on that in our own thinking.  We should not make Jesus out to be any less than who He is.  Second, we should be careful in how we present Jesus to the world around us to clarify His uniqueness.

Jesus is altogether different from any other figure in any other religion.  There are many religions that will acknowledge Jesus as a good teacher or prophet, but that doesn’t go far enough.  He was, and is, the Son of God.  Anything that makes Him less than that doesn’t line up with the truth of Scripture.  We must stand firm in that truth.

The Original Intent

2) What is John saying when he writes that Jesus is the Word who became flesh?

In Genesis 1, the world is brought into being through the power of God’s word, as every part of creation is spoken into existence.  John states that Jesus is, in fact, the source of those words of God and therefore was, and still is, God.

John wants his readers clearly understand that he is writing about someone who is much more than a mere man; instead, Jesus is God, who became flesh, in order to reveal Himself to the world.

Jesus’ coming in the flesh did not change his identity as God in any way, but served to reveal to humanity the invisible God they had been unable to approach and see up until that time.

The Everyday Application

2) What is John saying when he writes that Jesus is the Word who became flesh?

We cannot waver on the truth that Jesus was fully God, yet became flesh to walk the earth.  We must share that same truth with others when we want them to learn more about Jesus.  That is what makes Him so distinct.  In Jesus’ humility, He loved us enough to dwell among us and make Himself like us by taking on a human form.

In the Old Testament period, God would dwell with His people in the Tabernacle and then in his holy Temple. The literal meaning of the Greek in this verse is that Jesus came “to tabernacle” with us. He did this to help us understand God’s true heart for His people and the efforts He was willing to make to reconcile us to Himself.

The Original Intent

3) What is the importance of Jesus bringing grace and truth (verse 17)?

John writes to the people first about Moses bringing the law to God’s people.  Transitioning, he tells them that something even greater has arrived.  He makes the statement that, “…grace and truth came through Jesus Christ,” (verse 17).

For the Jews reading his words, John addresses how Jesus gives grace, emphasizing that grace is critical in even being able to follow the Law.  This was a critical point because for centuries the Jews had been trying to follow the Law in their own strength as a means for salvation.

But Jesus brings grace to fill the gap between our inability to follow God’s perfect law and God’s righteousness.  For the Greeks reading his words, John tells them that Jesus is truth.  Not just a truth, but THE truth.  This would have been significant, and important, to the Greek people, as truth was an important pursuit to them culturally.

The Everyday Application

3) What is the importance of Jesus bringing grace and truth (verse 17)?

The teaching about Jesus being both grace and truth is as relevant in our world today as it was to John’s original audience.  In a modern world that can be harsh and can feel like nothing we do is ever good enough, the message of grace is a welcome relief.

Instead of constantly striving to do or be more, grace gives us the assurance that Jesus will do for us what we cannot do for ourselves.  He is our perfection.  In that, we can find rest and peace; this is a message that is needed by so many!

In a world where truth is relative, subjective, and shouldn’t be questioned, Jesus offers an absolute.  He removes the confusion of what is real and right.  He brings clarity.  Think of those in your life; who needs to hear the message of Jesus as grace?  Who needs to hear the message of Jesus as truth?  How can you share the hope that Jesus offers with those people in a way that is winsome and inviting?

The biggest difference between Christianity and Islam is how Jesus is understood. Muslims are taught Jesus was a great Islamic prophet. Believing Jesus is the Son of God will send you to hell. (Quran 5:72) Christianity believes Jesus is the Son of God and belief in Him, as being fully God, will save you from Hell and grant forgiveness.

John 14:6-11

6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 “Lord,” said Philip, “show us the Father, and that’s enough for us.”

9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been among you all this time and you do not know me, Philip? The one who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who lives in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Otherwise, believe because of the works themselves.
Read More Of His Words

The Original Intent

1) Who is Jesus talking to in these verses?

We find these verses in the middle of a discussion Jesus is having, so to fully understand what is taking place, we read the surrounding these verses.

At the beginning of John 13, we find Jesus with His disciples washing their feet before the Last Supper. John is recounting the events of the Last Supper and then records the conversations Jesus had with His disciples in those last hours before His arrest.

At this point, Jesus had already dismissed Judas to betray Him; He knew His time was short. Sitting before Him are 11 men Jesus hand-picked to pour into during His three public years of ministry. They are the men He walked daily with, who saw Jesus in a multitude of scenarios, experienced Him, and had come to know who He truly was: The Christ. (Matthew 16:16)

Here, Jesus is taking His last opportunity to pour truth into their lives one final time before journeying to the cross. Jesus is leaning in, making sure they understand the importance of what is taking place, who He truly is, and what it means for their lives.

The Everyday Application

1) Who is Jesus talking to in these verses?

Though Jesus is specifically talking to His disciples in these verses, they still hold importance for Jesus followers today. These are some of the last words Jesus chose to communicate before beginning His final journey to the cross.

Jesus knew where He was headed and the amount of time He had left on Earth. If I knew the end of my life was coming I guarantee you I would be extremely specific about who I chose to talk to and what I would convey to them in those final moments. Jesus is doing just that.

He saw these words as significant, for the disciples then, and all disciples who would follow, to hear and understand as truth. He is conveying to all who heard these words, and all who read these words the reality of who He is and what that means for each of us. Because Jesus is God, we cannot afford to take His words lightly.

The Original Intent

2) What does it mean that Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life”?

Jesus begins John 14 by telling the disciples where He is going and what His plans are. Thomas, one of the 12, responds to Jesus by insisting they don’t actually know where Jesus is going so how could they possibly know how to get there. This statement from Jesus is in answer to Thomas’ questions. Jesus is telling His disciples the truth salvation hangs on.

Jesus, and the work He will soon finish on the cross, is the only way to God. There is no other way to know God, no other way to Heaven, and no other way to restored relationship with Him that is broken because of our sin. Matthew Henry’s commentary says Jesus “answers both Thomas’ inquiries and makes good what He had said, that they would have needed no answer if they had understood for themselves; for they knew Him, and He was the way”.

Each portion of this phrase teaches different components of the whole concept. Isaiah 35:8 tells of “a road and a way called the Holy Way”. Jesus is that road. It is the only road, or way, to God.

Matthew Henry explains how Jesus is the truth by saying, “Christ is the substance of all the Old-Testament types, which are therefore said to be figures of the true”. All the symbols and figures of that were used in the Old Testament to point forward, are no longer needed because Jesus is the true and complete fulfillment of all of them.

Lastly, Jesus is the life. Before Jesus, sin was atoned for through taking the life of an innocent lamb. Blood must be shed in order for forgiveness to be given. Jesus is about to give His life, shedding His blood, in the ultimate sacrifice, once and for all.

The Everyday Application

2) What does it mean that Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life”?

“I am the way, the truth, and the life” is the complete statement of salvation Jesus utters to His disciples in His final moments with them. He makes clear that regardless of what the world may say, there is only one way to God and to a restored relationship.

The plan God began before time to save humanity, is fulfilled in the Person who completed the work, the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus stands before the disciples clearly conveying, “It’s me! I am the only way to the Father!”

The world has many ideas on the way to attain Heaven, but Jesus tells us there is no other way than Him, no other truth other than who Jesus is and what He did, and no other way to eternal life than by resting the full assurance of our faith on the full righteousness of Jesus Christ.

Jesus has gone to prepare a place in His Father’s house for each of us, but the only way to get there is through the life-giving name of Jesus. Not a Jesus invented or modified by man’s idea, but the Jesus of the Bible, the Jesus who is fully God and fully man.

On our own, we can never be good enough to reach the Holy God. We can never work our way to Heaven, or make right the relationship broken in the Garden of Eden. Our souls long to be reunited to God, and the only way is through a relationship with Jesus!

The Original Intent

3) How do we see the Father in Jesus?

In John 14:9 Jesus is answering Philip’s question about wanting to see the Father. These disciples had walked closely with Jesus for three years and still, they did not completely understand Who they were with, so Jesus is once again explaining truth to them.

Jesus and the Father are One. Jesus is God in the flesh, the visible image of God that lived just as we live. When we look at the person of Jesus, we see the Father, because the 2 are 1.

Expositor’s Bible Commentary says it this way, “God has taken that form which is most comprehensible to you- your own form, the form of man.” When we look at Jesus, we see the Father in all we can understand and comprehend. Jesus is telling the disciples that they need to look no farther than Him to see what they are asking to see.

There is no image or symbol that can show the Father better, because He is the Father!

The Everyday Application

3) How do we see the Father in Jesus?

Jesus is conveying the truth: He is the Father, they are One. Genesis 1:26 first picks up on the idea that Jesus and God are one and the same. In this verse, we see God refer to Himself as “we” and “our”.

That doesn’t mean that there is more than one true God. Instead, it shows us there is more than one facet of God. Jesus is the physical representation of God that we can look to. John 1:1-2 also shows us that Jesus and the Father are One.  Therefore, just as the disciples simply needed to look at Jesus to see the Father, we too simply need to look at the person of Jesus, and we will see the Father.

Jesus took on human flesh so we can see and know the Father. We were created for fellowship with the Father and our souls are crying out for the intimacy that began in the Garden. Jesus is telling us to stop searching and look no farther because all we long for is standing in front of us in Him!

Expositor’s Bible Commentary notes, “What do we find in Christ? We find perfection of moral character, superiority to circumstances, to the elements, to disease, to death. We find in Him One who forgives sin and brings peace of conscience, who bestows the Holy Spirit and leads to perfect righteousness.

We cannot imagine anything in God which is not made present to us in Christ. In any part of the universe we should feel secure with Christ. In the most critical spiritual emergency we should have confidence that He could right matters. In the physical and in the spiritual world, He is equally at home and equally commanding.

We can believe Him when He says that he that has seen Him has seen the Father.” In essence, we see all we need to see of the Father when we look at Jesus, we need no more!

Read His Words Before Ours!

John 1:1-18
1 John 4:1-6
John 14:6-11

“All roads lead to Heaven…”
Do they really?

And if they didn’t, would you like to know?

It’s easy to say, “Of course, I’d rather know the truth!”.
But what if truth challenges what we already think,
what we already believe, and how we already live?
What if truth is different than what we’ve grown up believing?
What if truth offends us?
Would we still rather know?

Jesus As God?
Several cults include belief in Jesus as part of their doctrine, which can make it seem like “all roads lead to Heaven.”
But dig a little deeper, and the definitions are entirely different.
Many world religions hold Jesus as a model, a good man, an exceedingly wise prophet, or even a form of a deity, but only one, Christianity, claims Jesus to actually BE fully God.

Jehovah’s Witnesses, like Mormons, believe that Jesus is a created being. Jehovah’s Witnesses hold that Jesus is actually the archangel, Michael, and was created before a physical world existed. He has god-like qualities, but is not equal with Jehovah God.

Could This View Be True?
According to the Bible, Jesus has existed eternally with God not just “as a god”,
but actually “God.” Period.

“In the beginning was the Word (Jesus). The Word (Jesus) was with God and the Word (Jesus) was God.” (John 1:1)

Even Jesus says these words about Himself,
“Truly, truly before Abraham was, I AM.” (John 8:58)

This wasn’t poor grammar on Jesus’ part, He was using the title God had first called Himself when He was speaking to Moses at the site of the burning bush.
God told Moses He was the “I AM”.  (Exodus 3:14)
Jesus was calling Himself God, and every Jewish ear around Him knew it full well, which is why they ultimately crucified Him. They believed He claimed Himself to be God, not just once, but repeatedly and consistently.

If Jesus Himself said He was God all throughout the New Testament (John 10:30, Hebrews 1:3), was prophesied as the coming Messiah in the Old Testament (Isaiah 43:11 with Titus 2:13), and widely preached about as the Creator God, fully equal with God the Father as the Church became established, (Colossians 1:15-20, Isaiah 6:1-5 with John 12:41) who are we to claim differently?

Jesus ~ Spirit? Body? Both?
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that Jesus’ body and spirit were separate entities. The spirit part was good, but the physical body part was weakened because of His humanity. They claim that when Jesus was crucified, it was only His spirit that was resurrected because He couldn’t “take back” His fleshly body as it had been destroyed by sin in the sacrifice.

Could This View Be True?
The Bible is exceedingly clear about Jesus’ humanity and His deity, both before and after His resurrection. When Jesus appeared to the disciples in the upper room, He showed them his hands and feet, and invited Thomas to put his hand inside the wound where Jesus had taken a spear to His side. (John 20:27) Jesus also countered the idea that He was only “resurrected spirit” by directly saying of His resurrected body, “A spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.” (Luke 24:39)

Truly, for Jesus’ sacrifice to be acceptable on our behalf, He needed to be fully human and fully God. Human, so He could live our human life, and God, so He could do so blamelessly, for no human being could attain to God’s righteous holiness.

A Triune God?
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe the Holy Spirit to be an impersonal “good force”, much like the depiction in Star Wars. He is not a person, not even a Being, and certainly not a deity.

Could This View Be True?
Biblically? Most definitely not.
The Holy Spirit is noted in Scripture as having the three attributes of a personal Being:
A mind (Romans 8:27), emotions (Ephesians 4:30), and a will (1 Corinthians 12:11).

The Holy Spirit is also recorded in Scripture as doing actions only attributed to sanctioned, reasoning beings. The Holy Spirit teaches (John 14:26), testifies (John 15:26), commissions (Acts 13:4), gives commands (Acts 8:29), and intercedes (Romans 8:26).
All with authority, and all through the union of oneship found in the relationship of the godhead as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (John 16:12-15)

Also of significance in Scripture, is how often all 3 distinct persons of the godhead are mentioned together with equal rights and authority. Below is just one example:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19)

Saved ~ Some? None? All?
Jehovah’s Witnesses hold firmly to their belief that two “classes” of people are given salvation. First, the “Anointed Class” of 144,000 who will live and reign with Christ in Heaven. Second, the “Other Sheep” who will be relegated to earth, although it will be a “paradise”. Jehovah Witnesses believe that the full benefits of salvation are not for everyone.

The “how” one can be given salvation according to a Jehovah’s Witness isn’t “given” at all, it’s “earned” by obedience to the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ laws and rules, association with their organization, as well as faith in Jesus.

Could This View Be True?
Jesus answers like this:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) No extras, no additional pathways, no “all roads lead to Heaven”, just Jesus.

Paul states Christ’s truth like this:
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing;
it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
 (Ephesians 2:8-9)
No works, no good deeds, no religious association, just the radical grace of a God who pursues and loves us.

The truth?
Jesus, His fullness, His deity, His humanity, His righteous sacrifice on our behalf.
Plus Nothing.
Equals Everything.

Salvation is for all peoples equally. (Titus 2:11)
Given through God’s gracious mercy.
That we might live fully free because of His unchangeable, unshakeable truth.

If you, dear one, are reading this across the screen from me as a follower of the Jehovah’s Witnesses belief system, I invite you to sit and consider these words today. Not because they are cleverly crafted or tied with a pretty bow, but because they are true.
All on their own, without one bit of help from me, because they are breathed by the very Spirit of the Living God.

Be willing to wrestle, just for a bit, with “what if….”
What if Christianity is true?
What if I’m hinging my eternity on a lie?
Come, kick the tires of Christianity.
Come, meet my Jesus, the Jesus of the Bible, the Jesus who is fully God, fully man, fully able to save, and find real life!

The thing about truth is that it remains true regardless of whether we accept it or not.
Wouldn’t you rather hang eternity on something you can know for sure?

“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth,
and the truth will set you free!”
(John 8:31-32)

Digging Deeper

Jesus has gone to prepare a place in His Father’s house for each of us, but the only way to get there is through the life-giving name of Jesus. Not a Jesus invented or modified by man’s idea, but the Jesus of the Bible, the Jesus who is fully God and fully man. On our own, we can never be good enough to reach the Holy God.

We can never work our way to Heaven, or make right the relationship broken in the Garden of Eden. Our souls long to be reunited to God, and the only way is through a relationship with Jesus!
