Worship VI Day 5 Raise A Hallelujah

November 29, 2019 by Sarah Young 2 Comments

Read His Words Before Ours!

Philippians 4:4-8
Colossians 3:15-17
Deuteronomy 20:1-4
1 Peter 1:3-9
Psalm 138:1-8

Worship VI, Day 5

Hallelujah!  Praise!  Thank You, Jesus!

Shouts come from one pew, then another and another as the passionate preacher enthusiastically declares the goodness of the Lord.  You can feel the JOY, excitement, and anticipation in the room.

However, HALLELUJAHS are NOT limited to revival worship services or bound by location or circumstance.

Truth be told, sometimes a HALLELUJAH sounds more like HELP! than HOORAY!
HALLELUJAH may end with a question mark rather than an exclamation point.

HALLELUJAHs come in all shapes and sizes: a whisper, shout, sob, song, plea, or praise.
Whether written, spoken, or only thought in our hearts, God recognizes all of them.

I first heard the song “Raise a Hallelujah” at a Refresh Conference for foster and adoptive parents.  If you know anything about the REALITY of fostering or adopting, you understand the hardship and heartbreak.

As we gathered together, all broken and hurting, we CHOSE to praise.
Collectively, we lifted our voices to declare VICTORY even though we were ALL still in the midst of battle.

The apostle Peter knew what heavy suffering felt like, and he wrote a letter to encourage believers who were in the midst of hardship.
He told them their difficult circumstances should NOT determine how they lived.
(1 Peter 1:1-9)

Our praise is based on God’s character proven over and over by what He has already done.  With His faithfulness in mind, we can look ahead, fully anticipating what He will do.  This perspective allows us to RAISE A HALLELUJAH from the valley, the mountaintop, or anywhere in between.

Line after line, this song reminds us that praise is a CHOICE.

in the presence of my enemies

I think of David who often shared honestly about the adversity he experienced.  Yet, in the midst, David realized God was not only WITH him, but actually “preparing a feast for him in the presence of his enemies.” (Psalm 23:5)

louder than the unbelief

I think of the father who brought his son to Jesus, desperate for healing. The dad had watched for years as an evil spirit seized his little boy, throwing him into fire or water.  Helpless, he begged Jesus to do something, if He could.  Jesus assured him, “Anything is possible if a person believes.”  In raw honesty, the father cries out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”

Can you relate?  I know I can!

Sometimes we have to CHOOSE to declare God’s goodness that we KNOW to be true BEFORE we actually experience it in the NOW.

We can praise WHILE WE WAIT and trust God to act.
The song itself was actually written beside a hospital bed as people begged God to miraculously save a little boy.

I’m gonna’ sing, in the middle of the storm

I think of Paul and Silas in prison, worshipping their hearts out while bound with chains.  They could have been complaining, but instead they were praising.

We CANNOT wait for things to be perfect.
We MUST LEARN to praise God in the valley, the desert, the wilderness, and the storm.

in the middle of the mystery

We trust Him in the waiting.
We follow Him in the unknown.

As we do, hardship is EXPECTED.
Jesus actually GUARANTEED it.

So, when we find ourselves in tough times, don’t look at the storm,
fix your eyes on your Savior.
Don’t be afraid of the wind or the waves.
Silence them with worship.

my weapon is a melody

Who knew you could fight Satan with a song instead of a sword?!
Best part though?

Heaven comes to fight for me

We are not alone in the battle!
GOD is on our side, fighting FOR us and WITH us.

I think of the Israelites at the Red Sea, trapped with nowhere to go, and Pharaoh’s chariots racing towards them.  Moses assures them,
“The Lord Himself will fight for you.  Just stay calm.”
Then, he stretches out his staff, and the waters part by God’s mighty hand!

I may not know exactly what you are going through, but I do know
Up from the ashes, hope will arise
Death is defeated, the King is alive

Your present situation is NOT the end of the story.
God has already won the war.

We are in the middle of a fierce battle, yes.
BUT we are fighting FROM victory not for victory.

You may feel like your HALLELUJAH is a white flag of surrender rather than victory’s banner.    I STILL urge you to lift it up.
with everything inside of {you}

You may not be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but, raise your hallelujah and
watch the darkness flee

You may feel wrapped in anxiety, but proclaim,
fear you lost your hold on me

As we praise, lives begin to change.
First our own, and then countless others.

Someone hurting is watching as YOU trust God.
THEN, she utters her own tiny hallelujah.
Sing a little louder

Someone grieving sees YOU process your loss with hope.
She catches on and whispers hallelujah too.
Sing a little louder

Someone overwhelmed is listening as YOU cry out for God’s help.
She joins in, sharing your confidence.
Sing a little louder

Someone feeling defeated hears YOU declare Jesus’ victory.
She believes His victory is hers too.
Sing a little louder

All around the world, our voices unite to form a hallelujah chorus.
Louder and louder, you’re gonna’ hear {our} praises roar

Whatever you’re walking through in this moment, are you willing to raise your hallelujah? Even a shaky one?
The choir needs YOUR voice!!!

Captivating Day 6 Truth, Grace, And Winsomeness

July 15, 2019 by Rebecca 2 Comments

Read His Words Before Ours!

Philippians 4:4-9
2 Corinthians 2:12-17
James 2:14-26

Captivating, Day 6

My word of the year is winsome.
I know, maybe a little odd.

Each year in December, I begin intentionally speaking with the Lord about the coming year. How would He have me grow specifically?
In which areas do I need to take new ground for the kingdom?
Where am I feeling convicted?

I’m a “truth-girl” by nature.
I love truth, hold it tightly, seek it out, and test it to make sure no deceit is there.
I spent far too many years holding onto lies and building my life upon them.
Then my life broke, shattering into a million pieces.

My foundation necessitated solidity.
Hurt, angry, and fearful, I threw away everything about my previous foundation, tearing out deep-seated lies and seeking only unshakeable, incorruptible truth.

Battling to find truth became my lifeline.
Because truth always wins over deception.

I’m still “in the fight” against lies I innocuously believe about myself, others, and even God, but the more I dwell with the Lord through His Word, the steadier my life becomes.
The author of Truth has captivated my heart
with His steadfast and unchanging beauty
!

I had discovered the priceless treasure of Jesus, His Word, and His boundless grace.
I tore down all I had, giving everything over to Him, and finding the deepest delight in simply being His as He became Mine.

The trouble with us “truth-girls” is we like to dole it out in heavy helpings. Quickly pointing out lies and applying the antidotal truth in its place.
Helpful, right?!

Well, yes, unless we do it sans grace.
Jesus, the fullness of truth, never gave truth without grace.

And the Word (Jesus!) became flesh and dwelt among us,
and we have seen his glory,
glory as of the only Son from the Father,
full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

I, on the other hand, often give truth without grace.
Hence, winsome.

Jesus was the epitome of winsome.
He engaged in the ordinary conversations, the mundane of everyday life, and He did it with beautiful, attractive winsomeness while extending truth.

He could have kept preaching, instead He cared about hungry bellies and starved hearts.
He chose preparing a meal and served the people.

He could have kept walking, instead, he engaged with a young man who felt he had it all figured out.
He spoke with grace, extending Him the way of Life without budging on truth.

His close friend had denied Him 3 times right before His death. Jesus could have lectured him, pointing out where to do better or how wrong he was.
Rather, He cooked breakfast, reinstated his friend, and gave Him purpose.

The beautiful winsomeness of grace wrapped truth.

I’m a few months into my year of “winsome”.
This morning, I journaled again, “Keep making me winsome, Lord. May your grace be evident to all I encounter today.”

Sisters, it’s one thing to ask for training in righteousness.
It’s quite another to be obedient in it.

It was a mere 35 minutes after my time with the Lord.
I was seated in a coffee shop, hot drink and breakfast before me, ready to tackle my mountain of “must-finish”, when the Lord’s whisper interrupted me, “Look up, Daughter.”

I glanced up and saw a middle-aged man taking up an entire table for himself.
Coat tossed haphazardly.
2 bags and a backpack taking up the remaining table space.
His head bent so low to his phone, I couldn’t even see his face.
Glasses flung carelessly in front of him.
Stocking cap firmly attached to the top of his skull.

“Offer him breakfast.”
The Spirit spoke to my heart again, insistently.

“No”, was my quick reply.
“Do you see how old he is?! He might be a sex-trafficker!
He’s so disheveled, Lord. If he wanted something, he would get it. He clearly only cares about his phone. No.”

“Winsome.”

“No! Lord, not winsome. Not now. I’m not being “un-winsome”. His breakfast is not my concern. That’s weird, Lord. What would he say?!”

“Daughter. Winsome.”

Ashamedly, I admit, I rolled my eyes, plucked out my headphones, slowly pushing away from the table. “Okay, Lord. Okay. But if this doesn’t end well….” As if I could threaten the Lord God.

“Excuse me, Sir? Sir?”, graciously the Lord sweetened my tone as I bent to look in his eyes.
His eyes moved erratically, furtively glancing everywhere but into mine.
He mumbled a non-response, and my heart broke instantly.
This man was autistic.

How many had looked at him, but never seen him?
Just as I had.

How many eye rolls had he been the recipient of?
Like mine.

How many times had he been ignored because he was too scattered and disorganized?
As I had wanted to.

I met Daniel that morning.
A man few, if any, understood or cared to know.
A man who had been robbed that morning.
A man who felt alone and misunderstood.
A man who was hungry for breakfast and a love that was willing to be inconvenienced.

Sisters, Daniel is made in the image of the very same God who crafted you and me,
yet I was far more willing to be comfortable than to live winsomely for another.

I could journal and pray and have a “word of the year”, but none of it matters unless I’m also willing to listen and obey. As brother James puts it, “faith without works is dead.”

Here’s the truth: as much as I pushed against the voice of my Father that day, I still heard it.
I guarantee you if I hadn’t been practicing intentional time with the Lord, I wouldn’t have even been listening for His whisper.

The more I talk with Him, the more familiar His voice becomes.
The more captivated I am with His truth and His grace,
the more willing I am to extend it to others.
Even if my arrogant heart resists sometimes.

Winsome.
Live it.

The GT Weekend ~ Anchored Week 3

March 9, 2019 by Rebecca Leave a Comment

The GT Weekend!

At Gracefully Truthful, weekends aren’t for “checking out”.
Use this time to invite the Almighty’s fullness into you life in a deeper way!
Saturdays and Sundays are a chance to
reflect, rest, and re-center our lives onto Christ.
Don’t miss the opportunity to connect with other women in prayer,
rest your soul in reflective journaling,
and spend time worshiping the Creator who
longs for intimacy with each of us!

Worship Through Journaling

Worship Through Journaling

1) Regardless of your physical fitness, how do you “exercise” your spiritual muscles? How do you view spiritual disciplines like prayer, fasting, Scripture memorization, journaling, Scripture reading, church involvement, and engagement in biblical community? Skeptical? Excited? Life-giving necessity? If you were to give a “strength test” number from 1-5 for each of these, which ones would rank lowest? Give some time this weekend for making a plan to begin strengthening 1 or 2 of these and may the Lord bless you richly!

2) What are your gut reactions to Bri’s opening statement, “The world is dying”? As you go about your regular, everyday life this weekend, ask the Spirit to open your heart and eyes to see people through this lens, “The world is dying”. If it’s true, our mission to extend the gospel, the only hope for eternity, becomes paramount. What would it look like if you were to become increasingly more intentional in how you lived in light of this reality? Who can you reach? Who can you pray for?

3) Yesterday, Sarah challenged us to intentionally, fervently, and boldly wrestle in prayer on behalf of others. What do you believe about prayer? Why? How are your beliefs reflected in your prayer life? Intentionally set aside 10 minutes today to sit in silence with the Lord and His word. Read through Colossians 4:7-17, slowly savoring the words and their implications. Be quiet before the Lord, ready to hear His whispers. Who is He asking you to pray for? Who does He want to wrestle on behalf of? Write down those names or situations and fervently follow through. Set reminders on your phone, put up post it notes, decide to pray while you make dinner. Whatever you do, choose to wrestle diligently for these!

Praying Scripture back to the One who wrote it in the first place is a great way to jump start our prayer-life! Pray this passage from Colossians 4:2-4 back to the Lord and
let His Spirit speak to you through it!

Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.

Prayer Journal
You know I’ve struggled with prayer, Lord. Wondering why we have to pray. Aren’t You going to do what You will do anyways? You’ve walked beside me as I’ve explored prayer, You’ve guided and gently prodded, prompting me to ever trust You more deeply. You’ve called me over and over to trust what You say about prayer, that it’s powerful and effective.

It’s jaw-dropping stunning to me that You, the LORD of all creation, intentionally chose to include me, and us as believers, in Your Kingdom work. Prayer is an intricate, core component of that work. Thank You, Abba, for reminding me again, prayer doesn’t pre-ceed the work, prayer is the work. It’s the unifying work between You as godhead Father, Son, and Spirit, working in tandem with the faithful prayers of Your Church. Prayer is breathtakingly intimate! Humbled, I praise You for the grace gift of prayer!

Anchored Day 13 When The World Is At Stake

March 6, 2019 by Bri Bailey Leave a Comment

Read His Words Before Ours!

Psalm 95:2-5
Matthew 28:16-20
Colossians 4:2-6
1 Corinthians 16:9-10

Anchored, Day 13

Our world is dying.
Those of us walking with Jesus know the narrow road to life,
and we are commissioned to invite the perishing around us on the
journey to life everlasting. (Matthew 7:13-14)

The stakes couldn’t be higher.

This urgency drove Paul’s words to the Colossian church in chapter 4.
Having laid a foundation for Godly living in chapter 3, Paul now invites the Colossians to broaden their perspective to the lost world stretching out before them.

“Fellow saints,” he seems to say, “remember your transformation is unto transferral:
the transferral of lost souls from the Kingdom of Darkness into the Kingdom of Light.”

Paul extends the hand of ministry partnership to Colossian believers.
He begins by highlighting the power of prayer, fundamentally understanding the success of his local evangelism depends on a suffusion of supernatural power garnered by prayers of distant believers.

So too for us, sisters!
While evangelism may not be our main vocation, we are not sidelined!
Our supportive role is critical to the work of those on the mission field.
When the world is at stake, our prayers matter.

But how should we pray?
Verse 2 of this passage provides three main guidelines for powerful, supportive prayer.

First, we are to be STEADFAST in our prayers for those sharing the Gospel.
Consistency in prayer exponentially strengthens both the pray-er (growing both motivation and intensity within her) and the recipient.

Next, we are to be WATCHFUL in prayer.
When we get busy praying, the enemy gets busy opposing us. We need to be alert to his strategies, which he’s crafty enough to tailor to each of us. Head on a swivel, sisters, let’s fight to protect our prayers.

And finally, we are to be THANKFUL in prayer.
While the view from the trenches may be discouraging at times, it’s important to remember that ultimately, the victory has already been won. As we reflect on our testimonies, we are reminded God has been faithful and will be again.
We find ourselves infused with fresh hope and strength for the fight.

We’re ready to be consistent in our prayers,
alert to the strategies of the enemy to thwart us,
and gratefully confident that in the epic struggle for the world,
our God has already been declared Victor.
We’re ready to pray.

But what should we pray?
Verses 3-4 provide timely guidance.

First, Paul requests prayer “also for us”.
Again, this refers to those whose main vocation is spreading the Gospel, whether local or far distant. Specifically, Paul shares a deep desire to make the most of “open door” moments: those special opportunities to share Jesus in unusually effective ways. These are not day-to-day conversations with a single person, but rather unique openings to minister on a large scale.

In every interaction, Paul longs to declare the mystery of Christ in a way that makes it clear. Some people may have been taught a wrong understanding of the Gospel.
Others may have no frame of reference at all and find it overwhelming.
Paul seeks wisdom to spread the word of God in a way that is relatable to each person he encounters.

So, as we pray for our missionaries, let’s ask God to create open doors for the exponentially effective move of the Gospel.
Let’s ask Him to give those on the front line precisely the right words
to make clear the heart of the Father.

In the last few verses of this passage, Paul moves instructs the Colossians
how they ought to share Jesus.

Because of course, evangelism is not just for missionaries.
Each and every one of us have been commissioned
to engage in everyday, ordinary ways of sharing
the most extraordinary story ever told.

“The time has come,” Paul seems to say, “to put all of your learning, all of your discipline, all of your growth, into action. Being transformed into the Father’s image means your heart also becomes more like His, broken for His lost children. Go now; it’s time to act.”

Walk in wisdom toward outsiders,
making the best use of the time.
Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt,
so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
(Colossians 4:5-6)

Right off the bat, Paul encourages us with the simple command to engage those outside the family of believers. Time is short, and every interaction matters.
Therefore, Paul explains, wisdom is paramount.

Where is this person in the process of salvation?
What action on my part would be most beneficial
for this person
in this moment?

Perhaps my role is to sew a seed, leaving the harvest for another worker. (1 Corinthians 3:5-9) Or perhaps this is the moment of decision, and I ought to press on.
God’s timing is perfect, and my desire is to move in step with Him as He leads.

Furthermore, operating in the Father’s wisdom and listening the Spirit’s whisper allows our words to be seasoned in a way that makes the Gospel most powerful in each interaction. Because it isn’t about us, this is God’s Work!

A highly effective approach with one person might prove detrimental with another.
Before we’re overwhelmed by the weightiness of what lies ahead, remember we have God on our side. He created each soul; He is perfectly capable of leading us as His Spirit courts each one for the Kingdom.

When the world is at stake, the power of prayer is critical
along with a willing obedience to go.
Let us meet the Lord on our knees,
hear His whispers in our hearts,
and take Him with us to the streets.

Dwell Day 8 Come Away

October 10, 2018 by Rebecca 2 Comments

Read His Words Before Ours!

Psalm 46
Isaiah 6:1-8
Exodus 34:29-35

Dwell, Day 8

The chaos screamed louder with every shrill screech of my 3-year-old.
He flung his body violently backwards despite my attempts to hold him.
My water cup flew as his foot knocked it from the counter, its crash adding to the epic disaster of my kitchen.
I was exhausted, frustrated, and knew I was quickly losing it.
I was too far behind, in too many things, the hurricane wave-like pressure to be more than I was, crashed down on me fast.

“Come away with me.”
The whisper in my heart offered an oasis, cool water in the tornadic fury of my hot emotions.
No, it wasn’t an audible voice, but it was one I had been learning ever more steadily to listen to. It was the voice of One who loved me, who delighted over me, and in that moment of supreme chaos that bordered on insanity, He called me away.

Not to more stuff.
Not to remind me of the important things I hadn’t done yet.
Not to chastise me for being angry.
He called me to come away.
With Him.

With water dripping from the counter, the dog eating scraps on the floor, a dirty dish tower threatening to topple, smelly laundry spilling from the washer, crackers crunching under my feet, and 4 other children continuing to play in their shocking oblivion,
I obeyed the voice of my Savior.

Gathering my still shrieking preschooler, I turned a blind eye to it all, and with laser focus on the face of my Jesus, I ran upstairs, not caring in the slightest who called out after me for more snacks. I knew exactly where I was going.

As I hurried through my still messy bedroom, I grabbed my “pretty candle”, the one no one is supposed to touch, and a hidden matchbox. By the time I shoved my closet door closed behind me and the darkness quickly enveloped us, my little boy was still mad, but intrigued.
I struck the match, breathing in the acrid scent, my soul already quieting.
I knew Who was waiting for me and Whose presence I was entering.

“Look! Look!” I whispered to my dry-sobbing boy.
His eyes wide, tears gone, I held him as I began praying simple phrases.
I had learned that here, in the silence and solitude of this meeting place, short phrases packed with truth kept my heart and soul in the moment rather than wandering.
Truth anchored me in His presence.

“You are good. You are good. You are good.”
“You are for me. You are for me. You are for me.”
“You are glorious, Yahweh. You are glorious. Glorious.”
“Oh Majesty, Majesty, how breathtaking You are.”
“Majesty. Beauty. Grace.”
“Grace. Grace. Grace.”
“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
“Lord Jesus. My Lord Jesus.”

Sometimes my words whispered, sometimes they flowed quickly as the Spirit moved, sometimes my tongue was still as I drank in the exquisite beauty of His presence.
Silent and still, holding my son, watching the light,
my soul was swept away by the Supreme Lover of my heart.

There was no magic in the candle, no extra-ordinary spiritual experience of my closet location, there was simply an invitation to sit in silence and behold Majesty.

Time seemed to stand still for both me and my son.
Eventually, like every mama-story, a knock beckoned from the other side of my closet door.
But my spirit didn’t sag in response, peace pervaded. Joy swept in.
Truth anchored my soul as my eyes had re-focused on the Glorious One.

The idea of Silence and Solitude as an actual discipline of the Christian walk had never ever occurred to me.
Quiet time where you sit and read Scripture, yes.
Journaling your prayers and thoughts during quiet time, yes.
But no one had ever taught me to practice Silence & Solitude.

The discovery literally revolutionized my entire walk with Jesus, taking me from the playful shores of Christianity into the deep-sea dive of intimacy with the Love of my Soul.
Practicing regular silence and solitude changed the entire trajectory of my life.
I can absolutely guarantee you that where I am today, how I see people, the ministries I’m involved in, and the way I commune with Jesus is a direct result of silence and solitude.
Yes, it’s that critical!

After reading selections from Ruth Barton’s book, “Invitation to Solitude & Silence”, I was flabbergasted that I had never heard of this aspect of Christianity and began adopting it immediately.
It wasn’t always my closet, it wasn’t always using a candle, but those became my favorites.
I’ve shared intentional silence with the Savior, glorying in His presence, in my car before driving to “next”, in my “God Time Chair” as my pen has stilled and all else fades as I simply sit with Him, listening and responding to His Spirit, or in bed before I fall asleep. This isn’t just being quiet and restful, it’s intentional prayer-focused intimacy as we are drawn in to deep worship!

In words on paper, it’s utterly indescribable.
Astoundingly, the invitation comes again and again as He invites me to know Him deeper, delight in Him more intimately, to call Him Abba Father, to sit with tears streaming at His all-surpassing glory, and to live in light of that glorious encounter.

Here’s the sweetest thing, Jesus longs for all of this with each of us!
It doesn’t matter what your doubts are, how long or how short you’ve believed in Him as Savior, or whether you’ve ever crossed the line of faith in the first place, His invitation beckons right now, right here, in the middle of your crazy, busy, messy everyday life.

Will you go to Him?!
