Read His Words Before Ours!
Matthew 14:22-33
Lamentations 3:55-57
Proverbs 27:17
1 Corinthians 15:33 
“You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand
And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine”
This song is so true in my life, and although I don’t practice it as much as I should, it has a lot of great truths
that remind me to see the world through Kingdom eyes. So, let’s dig a little deeper into this beautiful song!
There are so many Bible verses that relate to Hillsong’s Oceans, like Matthew 14:22-33, where Jesus calls Peter to step out of the comfort zone of the boat and walk on water. The cry of my heart is to obey Jesus wherever He leads me and to trust Him regardless of my comfort zones.
Like Peter, we can trust in God even when we know we might fall.
As quickly as Peter began sinking into the waves around him,
Jesus was right there to pick him up.
We can trust and fully know that He will be there watching,
ready to catch us when we fall.
This is so powerful!
“You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail”
Even if we feel like we are sinking so far down that God won’t being able to save us from drowning in our own sin.
“In oceans deep my faith will stand and
I will call upon your name and keep my eyes above the waves”
This is my favorite part of the song and I love how this lyric ties into
Lamentations 3:55-57:
“I called on Your name, O Lord, from the depths of the pit.
You heard my plea, You came near when I called on You.
You said, ‘Do not fear!’”
I love these truths so much because it is exactly like life.
We live in a world that is so full of sin and hatred towards others, that sometimes we feel like we’re just sinking and growing farther away from God. But, if you surround yourself with people that will support you in your faith journey and help you stay above the waves,
you will be able to do anything with God’s help.
I have my church friends (aka: my best friends), and then I have my school friends who don’t go to church. When I hang out with my school friends, or even a mix of both, it’s very hard not to gossip about other people when that is all they want to talk about.
That’s when I feel like I’m sinking deeper into the ocean.
What makes you feel like you’re sinking into deeper waters?
Is it knowing you should talk to your new neighbors?
Is it not making time to do your devotional in the morning or at night?
I know I struggle with doing a devotional because it seems like it’s going to take up so much time. But, in reality, it is so worth it! For me, it makes me feel refreshed, it puts me in a better mood, and makes me excited to see what God has in store for my day!
When I hang out with just my Jesus-believing friends, we still struggle with not gossiping,
but as soon as we start talking about other people, we ask each other, “Are we gossiping?”
When I’m hanging around this group, I can call on God’s name and He will keep my eyes above the waves, giving me a Kingdom focus.
As it says in Proverbs 27:17, we want to have friends that help us on our personal faith journey,
so that we can help others on their faith journey;
we sharpen each other.
No, I’m not just saying hang out with your believing friends because they are easier to be around.
I personally think that Jesus calls us to be in community with others.
I see this happening all around me like in my parents’ community group or in my own small group.
We tend to talk more authentically when we are around people we know and trust.
This past semester, I participated in Cross Country, which was so much fun, but also very tiring! Having practice 5 days a week, after waking up and going to school all day, running felt like the last thing I wanted to do. But God used this time for a couple of friends and me to have influence on a non-churched guy friend. Yeah, it probably was mostly our guy Christian friends that influenced him to go to church, but together as a community of believers, we were able to encourage him to see Jesus. Now, he comes to church as often as he can and is getting to know Christ.
God is pulling him out from the deep part of the ocean,
helping him get to the top where he can see above the waves!
God uses people to build His kingdom, to look for others who need to know Him, and to help them come to true faith in Him.
He wants to use you! Are you willing to let Him?
““Lord, if it is You, command me to come to you on the water.”
Jesus said, “Come.”
So, Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.”
We can go out.
We can keep our eyes above the waves.
We can surround ourselves with Christian community.
We can be on the lookout for others who are sinking, so we can build God’s Kingdom.
